Catching up With FC Role Model Lesley Edwards!

Lesley Edwards is a Dating Expert and Relationship Coach with Mars Venus Success Coaching. She joined us as a 2016 Role Model and got married to the love of her life in the later part of 2016.

We haven’t chatted for awhile! What’s been going on in your business and your life over the past few months?

Oh my gosh it has been the most delicious whirl-wind! September 30th I got married!! to my husband (I’m still getting used to saying that) Matt, the most incredible man I could’ve imagined.

And then we left for our absolute dream honeymoon in Maui.

Dress from Toronto label Studio Fresh. This style is sold out but you can see current Studio Fresh here.

Since I’ve been back I was speaking in Philadelphia to promote our next Goddess Weekend there in January, and we just wrapped up our last Goddess Weekend of the year here in Toronto, in November.

You’re married now! Given that you’ve devoted your career to helping people find juicy, glorious love in their life, I can only imagine this is a very exciting time for you. What tips do you have for people to keep it fun and romantic while balancing all the chaos of planning a big event, working and real life?

Yes! Well actually the best advice I got was to keep pulling my focus back to why were doing all the planning and shopping, and managing details etc!

The fact that we are crazy in love. That is all. The bottom line was we are crazy in love and that’s all that matters, it’s all we focused on on the day of the wedding and we soaked it in totally and completely, because nothing was going to mess with That! And it’s really funny, this idea of “real life”.

Lesley 2

Actually a lot of people asked us about “getting back to real life”, and I know what you mean getting back to routine, usual life. But for us, it is all real life, the wedding, Hawaii, totally real and juicy, and our life here too!

We feel totally blessed to have experienced, and be living the life we have here at home. It’s actually all that much sweeter since we are married, like something has fully clicked into place. Where before we were planning to spend our life together, now we are in it. Together. It’s special.

role model bannerHow did you meet Matt? How do you coach your clients on meeting great people?

I actually knew Matt for a whole year before I saw him as a potential love interest. I was head coaching The Self Expression & Leadership program at Landmark and he was training as a coach.

lesley 4

On the very last night of a 4 month program he blindsided me, and told me I was “the kind of woman he strived to be with”.

HELLO! I did not see it coming at all! And there was no way I was going to pass up going on a date with someone willing to take a risk like that!

With my clients the willingness and ability to take a risk for love is a main focus. In fact it is one of the best ways to expand our level of openness to seeing and attracting the right person to us.

If you want someone to take a risk to be with you, ask you out, express their love & affection for you, than check out some ways you would be willing to risk something yourself.

For example, saying yes to a date even though you don’t think he’s your type….that’s what I thought about my Husband, not my type!!

What are the biggest pitfalls you see people making when it comes to their love life?

Lesely 5

One of the big ones is Keeping The Back Door Open. When we only have a limited amount of our time & energy that we can dedicate to love & relationships, we want to spend it wisely.

When we keep the back door of the past open for all the Wrong Ones to come and go in our thoughts (or more), our energy is drained and is focused on recreating the problems of the past.

However once the back door is closed we can focus all that delicious time & energy on what we want, and what feels like Yum! Our brains can’t help but find what we focus on.

You look fabulous and I know you have a great outlook and radiate positivity. What do you do to take care of yourself? Do you have a favourite workout? How do you manage the stresses of your own business?

Thank you! You are so sweet!! This is a constant learning for me, in fact one of my mantras right now is “I am learning to love myself ferociously”, so I am continuing to discover this all the time.

I love yoga and volleyball to move my body, have some fun and feel good.

My go-to stress management break is still colouring. I got a beautiful Lost Ocean book last Christmas and that is my meditation and stress relief practice.
lesley6

How do you plan for the growth and future of your business? What’s next for you towards the end of 2016, 2017 and beyond?

Next Goddess Weekend is here in Mississauga Feb 24-26, and my sights are set on expanding the Goddess community and sisterhood so that women can be lead by their inner wisdom and guidance toward the love of their life.

It is such a yummy path that so many successful accomplished women are ready to explore. Life on their own terms, with way more Ease and Love. All are welcome and belong.

What happens in a Perfect Fit Wardrobe Makeover?

You may have heard a lot about our Perfect Fit Wardrobe Makeover lately, and many people aren’t totally clear on exactly what it is or what it can offer them.

PSX_20140528_112120

Our Perfect Fit Makeover is a FREE styling service to help YOU feel amazing, confident and self-expressed through fashion.

We were hearing many of our customers saying things like:

  • “I just don’t know what looks good on me anymore”
  • “Since my size changed I don’t feel confident”
  • “I have a new job and I want to be taken seriously but I still want to feel like myself”
  • “I’ve gotten really lazy about looking good”
  • “I used to have fun with fashion but I don’t want to look like I’m dressing too young.  I need a new look that works for my life now!”

And we knew that we could help, so we built our Wardrobe Makeover Services.

Our Fresh Collective Style Coaches are specially selected for having a real passion for having women look and feel their best.  We add in ongoing training and self-learning so that we can really deliver on women loving themselves, feeling great about how they look and loving fashion as a means of self expression.

PhotoGrid_1401988740430

Here are real women in outfits from Fresh Collective. Our typical customers include teachers, business women, moms and grandmas, hairstylists, actors, entrepreneurs, social activists, politicians, health care professionals and women from a range of other walks of life. Our ladies are usually in their late 20’s to late 50’s but we have customers who are teens and others who are seniors! The common thread is always that they are up to living life fully and want to express their inner joy and vibrancy through fashion. And we’re here to provide the wardrobe to do just that!

So what exactly happens during a Perfect Fit Wardrobe Makeover?

  • We start with an online survey to understand your fashion goals and lifestyle.  For example, we’re not going to sell you pencil skirts and high heels if you need to move, climb and bend for your job.
  • We may follow up with a phone consultation to find out more.
  • We book an appointment with you for one on one service and we preselect pieces to suggest, so it’s easy for you when you walk in.
  • You can also bring items from home that you want to get more use out of and we plan outfits around those pieces and suggest new accessories to provide new looks.
  • And we educate you on what styles you should look for and choose going forward and why.
  • We provide photos and follow up if you like, so you remember what you learned and can get ongoing coaching about fashion.

Our commitment is that you feel great and experience a new level of confidence and inspiration after a Perfect Fit Makeover AND that you build a wardrobe full of pieces you love!

PhotoGrid_1401988923127

Real women looking really great in outfits from Fresh Collective! We specialize in the outfits that you’ll love, that will last for years and that have you ready and out the door to live life in no time flat. Our ladies do not have time to primp and plan elaborate outfits. They have lives to live! Our outfits take you from point A to point Z in comfort and style throughout your busy day.

You can count on our Fresh Collective Style Coaches to really get what you’re out to accomplish with fashion, focus on how you feel in the outfits they suggest and never push you to buy something you don’t love.  We work to find the things you DO love, so the sales come easily.

And every Perfect Fit Makeover is free and no obligation.  If you don’t find items to love that day, you get the same gracious and extraordinary service as if you bought out half the store.  We are focused on YOU feeling wonderful as our priority, and not our sales goals.

And shhhhh….. don’t tell our competitors, but that’s our secret to success as a business.

Show Stopping Sook-Yin Lee

We have customers from all different walks of life. From teachers to nurses; authors to producers; musicians to artists…

One such artist is Sook-Yin Lee, who recently stopped by Fresh Collective Kensington. There, she scored the perfect dress to wear onstage at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards to present at the gala event.

Sook-Yin looking great in the Brenda Beddome Watercolour Wrap Dress from Fresh Collective

Sook-Yin looking great in the Brenda Beddome Wrap Cascade Dress from Fresh Collective (Spring/Summer 2013)

We’re so honoured Sook-Yin chose to wear a Canadian designer from Fresh Collective, and we asked her for a few words on her selection.

“I was in the neighbourhood and passing by FC with my sister when we decided to come in. This dress is unlike anything I have. My eye was drawn to the swirl of 70s era colour, a period of time I’m curious about. Initially I thought the neckline might accentuate my already broad shoulders and make me look like a football player, but when I tried the dress on, the neckline swooped lower than I thought, and I liked the way it looked. When I discovered the shop features mostly indie Canadian designers and that this dress was made by Toronto-based Brenda Beddome, I bought it.”

Style Profile – Sarah Couture McPhail

In our seventh Style Profile, we feature one of Laura-Jean’s best friends, Sarah Couture McPhail. Laura-Jean and Sarah have known each other for more than 15 years.  Sarah met Laura-Jean through one of the first employees of Fresh Collective, and then worked part-time at the Kensington store when it was still called Fresh Baked Goods.

“Sarah has always been among the most stylish women I know.  She effortlessly mixes and matches, and uses accessories in creative and fun ways to produce endless looks.  I feel like I’ve never seen her wear the same thing twice, but I know she pulls from her closet from past seasons and just makes things look new.

She’s an avid Fresh Collective shopper, and loves to find the unique Canadian designer pieces that make her wardrobe so special. Aside from being super stylish, Sarah is fun, amazing and incredibly kind hearted.  She is a mom of twin boys, an artist and active in her community and her school.

She’s the kind of friend who has great get-togethers, awesome parties for her kids and can feed you or find a glass of wine for you just because you popped in her back door unannounced. She shows up at your door with home remedies when she knows you’re sick and her house is the one all the kids just gravitate to in the summertime.  I feel blessed to have Sarah in my life and I wanted to let the world know how much I love her.

What’s a typical day like for you? I am rushing. I rush kids and myself off to school; I run to the studio; I fetch errands; I work on Parent Council endeavours; and I cook up other community projects. I try to squeeze in friend time, quality kid time, and time with my partner as much as I can. This usually results in scrambling hard for a stretch, then crashing hard for a couple days.

What in your life is really important to you? So much is important to me, but my family and friends are paramount. My house is full. I like it that way. I am also very appreciative of the quiet time I get to spend at the studio I share. Without any doubt, I am fortunate.

Dress: Frill Dress - Desserts and Skirts. $165.00Shoes: Miz Mooz, past season from Sarah's own wardrobe.

Dress: Frill Dress – Desserts and Skirts. $165.00

What would you like to be remembered for? “I aspire to help build communities and create them where they don’t already exist.” That is a quote from my resume. More than that though, I would like to equally and wholeheartedly be remembered for being a good friend/ mom/ and partner. I would also like to leave behind some damn good art… since we are being optimistic here.

What role does fashion play in your life? Fashion has always been a special source of inspiration. In the past, I’ve really enjoyed conceptual dressing. Whether it be playing with a nautical look or rocking 70s librarian, I am drawn to the associations that clothes ignite. Dressing up is often like taking on a new character. Though I might not act like an 80s glam superstar, when I wear a metallic blouse with a belted harness (not as crazy as it sounds) I am trying to conjure a feeling. When it works, it puts a strut in my stride and nothing can go wrong. Today while I dress a little more conservatively (by my own standards), I am still drawn to vintage and vintage inspired pieces. I like structured and well made clothes that will last. I also like blending modern clothes with retro ones too.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? I have been a fan of Fresh Collective since the beginning. Finding clothes that fit me is not easy. Stores don’t stock for short and curvy people. I love knowing that the clothes I buy from Fresh are conflict free. I also love knowing that I am supporting local designers and fellow artisans. I hardly ever walk out of the stores without buying something, which leads me to avoid going in sometimes. But the clothes, and the skilled and helpful sales team at Fresh Collective never fail to draw me back in… often.

What do you have that you want to promote? Right now I am busy at school and doing personal projects, but you can always check out my tumblr, for upcoming workshops and events.

Is there anything else we should know about you? I am extremely uncomfortable “tooting my own horn”. In my line of work, it is unfortunately essential. This was a good exercise.  Thank you Fresh Collective for this and for being a positive place for women of all shapes, a reliable place for edgy/on trend fashion and an amazing gang of people. You all are extraordinary.

Style Profile – Michelle Carey

In the sixth edition of our Style Profile series, we feature one of our long term designers, Michelle Carey. Michelle has been selling her line at Fresh Collective for more than five years now, and it has developed into one of our most popular lines. Her Amy Dress is a perennial best-seller and her pieces are known for flattering fit, meticulous construction, and feminine silhouettes that suit a range of women and figures.

Michelle is a sweetheart and her nephew is the light of her life.  She visits him frequently and was thrilled to be able to wear the ring he gave her in her photos because he would be excited to see her wearing it.  Michelle sews every stitch of her beautiful garments herself, and is just one of the awesome designers who make up our community.  I’ve enjoyed every minute of working with this talented, dedicated, and lovely entrepreneur all these years!

What’s a typical day like for you?

Full of planning! I have to look at the start of my day at Fresh Collective and where I might be going afterward whether it’s karaoke, trivia club or on a date. Typically, with just one outfit, some accessory options take me easily throughout the day and evening. I’m on the go from sun up to sun down and I love it!

What in your life is really important to you?

Family – and friends; especially the ones that are more like family now – are most important to me.  I want to make sure everyone I love gets to have time together. It’s a great recharge for me; an energy boost.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I don’t know if I’d want to have a lasting legacy, but I do want to be remembered for the happiness I bring to the people around me. A smile and wave can do a lot for the heart!

What role does fashion play in your life?

Fashion is part of me. I find it in everything I do. How am I presenting myself as a Style Coach at Fresh Collective? How am I presenting myself as an authority on the flat-track? (I’m a Roller Derby Official.) It is how I carry myself when I walk out the door to coming home at night.

TL - holly dress

Dress: Holly Dress by Kabuki. Regular price, $179.00 now with 40% off makes it only $107.40.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

Supporting our designers is a major reason why I love Fresh Collective. I know I can be out in a crowd and noticed for the unique and intelligent design of the pieces I am wearing, because our designers take so much care in making these decisions. And, I love that I can chat up our shop to everyone I meet!

What do you have that you want to promote?

I am a Roller Derby Official and my league, Hammer City Roller Girls, is entering into their 9th season. Our Season Opener is May 3rd.  We come from all walks of life (just like our fabulous customers!). I want to celebrate in the fact that we are all different shapes, sizes, ages but everyone is an amazing human being, capable of truly captivating things!

Is there anything else we should know about you?

I have a penchant for high-waisted undies that show off my curves, I can be found singing at karaoke weekly, and I like to dance to  great tunes from the 50s & 60s (and a little Wilson Phillips too).

Jane Haselgrove – Regional Manager for Fresh Collective and Independent Consultant for Arbonne.

What’s a typical day like for you?
A typical day looks like working at Fresh Collective all day from 11-7pm.  From there I either go out and work on my other business hosting parties, going to meetings or meeting with people for a drink. Three nights a week I also go Bouldering after work. It’s kind of like rock climbing but there are no ropes!
What in your life is really important to you?
Balance is very important to  me. I love to be busy doing things I love but I also don’t like to be controlled by my schedule. Scheduling my life so that it works for me is very important to staying positive and happy even when things don’t work out the way I planned.

What would you like to be remembered for?
Revolutionizing the indie fashion world!  I LOVE what I do at Fresh Collective. If I am remembered for being part of an institution that has made thriving careers for designers and stylists in Toronto and perhaps, world wide, my life would be well spent.
What role does fashion play in your life?
In the last two years I have really  embraced that I am a Fashion Professional. Style and fashion is my career and I love that I get to embrace self-expression through fashion every day. In other words, it plays a VITAL role in my daily life and my identity.

Style Profile – Carrianne Leung

Our Style Profile series is where we feature some of our fabulous outfits in real life, on real women. In the third edition of our style profile series, Carrieanne lets us in on her life, her thoughts on style, and how she rocks her favourite Fresh Collective pieces.

Name: Carrianne Leung

Occupation: Academic, Student Support Services, Business Owner, Writer, Mother.

Age: in the wilds of the mid-40s

Lifestyle: fast mo/slow mo/fast mo/slow….

Carrianne 1-1

Carrianne is wearing The Andy Dress by Rita DiCesare, Now $96.00; Amelia Boots by Miz Mooz, $160.80; Necklace by Curious Oddities, now $35.20!

What’s a typical day like for you?

If I can get my kid and myself out the door in time, both of us clean, dressed, fed and with lunch in hand by 8:45 AM, then the hardest part of the day is over.

What in your life is really important to you?

My family.

Social justice.

Inspiration.

Laughing so hard until I double over and my stomach hurts.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I want to be remembered for being generous – with time, spirit, love and friendship (even money when I have it!)

What role does fashion play in your life?

I have always loved fashion. I grew up in the 80s with the likes of Cyndi Lauper as a style influence, so I appreciate a particular whimsy in clothes. I was also a Goth for 5 minutes in the 90s and will always have a love for the melancholic fashion statement. In other words, I have range.

Carrianne 2-1

Beaconsfield dress Address Apparel, now $90.00, Amelia Boots now $160.80

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

Where do I start? I am sure that at least half of my wardrobe comes from Fresh Collective designers. Being a 40 something woman who must juggle multiple roles – I work at OCAD university, I co-own an organic grocery store, I have a 6-year old kid, I just got a novel published and will be doing many readings – I need clothes that can fit all these scenes. The pieces that I get from Fresh are able to do that for me.  I love the colour, the prints, the amazing cuts and shapes of the clothes and how well they are made.  They are also classic in an unconventional sense – they outlast the other 5-minute trends in fashion and still come off as very current years after purchase. I also love that they are made and designed in Canada.

What else do you have going on in your life?

I just launched my first novel. It’s called, “The Wondrous Woo“, and can be found on bookshelves at your local book store as well as Amazon.

I also have an organic grocery called Multiple Organics on Dundas West. We are “fresh” too!
