banner 4-borderWhat’s a typical day like for you?

On a good day I have a  variety of tasks.  Normally I start my day with catch up on emails.  Often there are meeting with artists, volunteers and or instructors if we are in a planning stage for things (and we almost always are for something)  If I am lucky I also get to go something in the studio.  If I am lucky I get to do some studio work which could be working on making paper pulp or folding and sewing books. I often teach classes too.  That I really love doing.  So its a whole variety of things.Emily6

What in your life is really important to you?

People are really important to me.   I have some amazing people in my life.  I think people at their best can be really wonderful and supportive of each other and we are at our worst when we forget to take care of each other.  So, taking care of each other in big and small ways is really important to me.
Visual art is really important to me.  I think it makes life worth living. I think music does this for other people but visual art really makes me feel connected to a bigger whole.

banner 3- borderWhat would you like to be remembered for?

These are really big questions!  I would like to be remembered by my friends as loving and funny and serious.  I am not terribly worried about being remembered by other people but hopefully I will have left the world around me a little better that I found it and I will have contributed something to the communities I am a part of.   I think visual art is a great way to engage with people and a really great way of working through complicated ideas that are sometimes harder with words.  I love facilitating visual art as part of community engagement and connecting wit people.  So, I hope I will be remembered for doing that.

What role does fashion play in your life?
My job is very active when i am making things and a studio environment is very messy so sometimes I feel kind of limited because I need clothes to be pretty sturdy and washable and easy to move around in.  When I find the right things those I can do all those things and still feel like i am expressing my personality through the clothes. I tend to buy things I really love that feel special and not buy them very often so I think maybe clothes are important to me but fashion in the sense of trends isn’t.  I’m more interested in feeling like myself in clothes and being able to do my job and make things.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?
I love that the clothes are special and good quality. So I can find things that are fun and me and comfortable and also that will last well. I like that there are Canadian designers.  I like that there are quirky things that I can peice together.  It sort encourages being able to add nice things to your wardrobe without having to start from scratch.

I was really interested in your Tell us a bit about business, Paperhouse Studio.

Paperhouse is an experimental studio based in paper and print so we do a lot of things!  We teach classes in papermaking, printmaking and bookbinding.

We also work one on one with artists to facilitate artwork based in those mediums and we take on experimental projects from anyone who has a weird idea that we think we can make happen. We did a really amazing project from a melanoma campaign last year that has us combining 3D printing and papermaking. The results were really special.  This year we started an outreach arm called Paperhouse Outreach Collective and we run community programs  through that.  We just finished an amazing program called ZIPE teaching youth to make zines.  We got to bring in a lot of guest artists to teach writing, printing and binding.  We were luck enough to get a grant to run that program so that was pretty awesome.   We are located in the Artscape Youngplace building and we are open to the public Wednesday through Saturday 11-6.  Come and visit us!

My heart is on the wrong side of my body. Seriously. Like its on the right side instead of the left. If my heart ever stops they are going to have to defibrillate backwards because my electricity runs contraflow

Is there anything else we should know about you? I’ve been travelling for the past 10 years, teaching Pilates, yoga, and practising Chinese Medicine. I am back in Toronto healing my tribe and mothering my daughter as best as I know how. I am opening my OWN clinic in May, it’ll be a collective of all things that heal!! As a healthcare practitioner I am grateful because every day I am able to share this wonderful medicine to all. I am inspired by all the people that have met in my life, I have striven for something more and made a commitment toward better living.  In Chinese Medicine, it is a key concept to understand that everyone heals differently.  I approach my work with compassion, dedication, optimism, direction and education.  My patients are my greatest teachers and I am honored to be a part of their journey toward a more vibrant life.

cherry 1

Dress: Cherry Bobin – $120; Shoes: Croche Flats – El Naturalista, $184

Style Coach Vanessa says, “This is the perfect summer sundress!  Lightweight and stretchy for easy wearability and comfort.  Wear it with flats and a scarf for a day in the park or some cute sandals and a big floppy hat for a day at the beach!”

cherry2

Style Coach Vanessa says, “You can’t go wrong with this simple, stretchy summer dress!  The band around the waist creates an hourglass silhouette that any woman can appreciate and the printed fabric adds a fun pop of colour for easy transitioning from daywear to night.  Wear it with layered long necklaces for a boho streetwear look, or add a cardi and some heels for a night out!”

Fresh Collective Style Profile – Laura Spink

I became a fan of Laura’s band The Young Novelists after seeing them share the stage with the band my husband plays in (Ron Hawkins and the Do Good Assassins).   Their music is great (check it out!) and following their activity on Facebook I could see they were travelling a lot and playing lots of gigs all over the place.  What I didn’t know until I got to know her better was that Laura also is a mom and has a full time career as a scientist!  Let’s learn a little more about this fabulous busy, inspiring and accomplished lady!  – Laura-Jean, CEO and Founder of Fresh Collective

Name: Laura Spink
Occupation: Vocalist and percussionist in Toronto-based folk-rock band The Young Novelists and hydrogeologist with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change
Age: A good age.
Lifestyle: So busy! But in a good way! I dress pretty casually during the day, but when I perform I dress up.

What’s a typical day like for you?

I’m so not a morning person, so on a typical weekday when I’m not playing a gig, I force myself out of bed, have a quick shower, throw on something work appropriate, kiss my husband and son goodbye and dash out the door to catch the bus to my day job downtown. After work I come home and spend time with my son until his bedtime around eight. Then depending on the night, I’ll either have rehearsal, hunker down in front of the computer and do administrative band things (endless emails, social media stuff, graphic design), or go out to see live music and catch up with friends. There is so much live music going on on any given night in Toronto; it’s really quite amazing!

What in your life is really important to you?

Spending time with my four year old son Simon is the most precious thing. He is the most amazing person I know. But it’s also important to my husband and I that Simon sees his parents do what they love doing, which means that sometimes we’re away from home playing music (and our he gets to hang out with his grandparents). It’s a balance and we’re always reassessing how to make it work so we’re all happy.

What role does fashion play in your life?

Honestly, I feel somewhat overwhelmed by fashion a lot of the time. I know what I like on other people, but I feel totally overwhelmed when I go shopping for clothes. I’m a lot more confident when it comes to the dresses I perform in though. When I was in grade nine, my grandmother let my sister and I raid her closet, since then I’ve always loved that 50s and 60s vibe. When I play I generally wear one of my grandmother’s dresses or a vintage inspired dress from one of the independent clothing shops around town. Dressing up helps put me in a different headspace.

Dress: Jayne Retro Shirt Dress – Mandala Design $138
Shoes: Adah ankle boots – Miz Mooz $210 (now on sale for $168)

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

The folks who work there are so great at helping style challenged people like me put together an outfit. Plus the clothes they carry are mostly independent Canadian designers, which I love.

What do you have that you want to promote?

The Young Novelists are playing a residency at the Cameron House (408 Queen St West) from 8-10pm every Monday in November (3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th). We’re also putting the finishing touches on our new album, which will be release in the Spring, and we’re planning a big old party to celebrate!

Is there anything else we should know about you?

I was a pretty good triple jumper and 200 metre sprinter back in high-school.

What’s a typical day like for you?

Full of planning! I have to look at the start of my day at Fresh Collective and where I might be going afterward whether it’s karaoke, trivia club or on a date. Typically, with just one outfit, some accessory options take me easily throughout the day and evening. I’m on the go from sun up to sun down and I love it!

What in your life is really important to you?

Family – and friends; especially the ones that are more like family now – are most important to me.  I want to make sure everyone I love gets to have time together. It’s a great recharge for me; an energy boost.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I don’t know if I’d want to have a lasting legacy, but I do want to be remembered for the happiness I bring to the people around me. A smile and wave can do a lot for the heart!

What role does fashion play in your life?

Fashion is part of me. I find it in everything I do. How am I presenting myself as a Style Coach at Fresh Collective? How am I presenting myself as an authority on the flat-track? (I’m a Roller Derby Official.) It is how I carry myself when I walk out the door to coming home at night.

TL - holly dress

Dress: Holly Dress by Kabuki. Regular price, $179.00 now with 40% off makes it only $107.40.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

Supporting our designers is a major reason why I love Fresh Collective. I know I can be out in a crowd and noticed for the unique and intelligent design of the pieces I am wearing, because our designers take so much care in making these decisions. And, I love that I can chat up our shop to everyone I meet!

What do you have that you want to promote?

I am a Roller Derby Official and my league, Hammer City Roller Girls, is entering into their 9th season. Our Season Opener is May 3rd.  We come from all walks of life (just like our fabulous customers!). I want to celebrate in the fact that we are all different shapes, sizes, ages but everyone is an amazing human being, capable of truly captivating things!

Is there anything else we should know about you?

I have a penchant for high-waisted undies that show off my curves, I can be found singing at karaoke weekly, and I like to dance to  great tunes from the 50s & 60s (and a little Wilson Phillips too).

What’s a typical day like for you?
A typical day looks like working at Fresh Collective all day from 11-7pm.  From there I either go out and work on my other business hosting parties, going to meetings or meeting with people for a drink. Three nights a week I also go Bouldering after work. It’s kind of like rock climbing but there are no ropes!
What in your life is really important to you?
Balance is very important to  me. I love to be busy doing things I love but I also don’t like to be controlled by my schedule. Scheduling my life so that it works for me is very important to staying positive and happy even when things don’t work out the way I planned.

What would you like to be remembered for?
Revolutionizing the indie fashion world!  I LOVE what I do at Fresh Collective. If I am remembered for being part of an institution that has made thriving careers for designers and stylists in Toronto and perhaps, world wide, my life would be well spent.
What role does fashion play in your life?
In the last two years I have really  embraced that I am a Fashion Professional. Style and fashion is my career and I love that I get to embrace self-expression through fashion every day. In other words, it plays a VITAL role in my daily life and my identity.

What do you have that you want to promote?
I would love to share that I am an all around Fashion and Style Professional. I can help you with your personal image from clothing to makeup because I also have another business I do on the side called Arbonne.
Is there anything else we should know about you?

Style Profile – Laura-Jean Bernhardson

Our Style Profile series is where we feature some of our fabulous outfits in real life, on real women. In the first of our style profile series, our CEO Laura-Jean talks about what she wore to a Rock’n’Roll show at Lee’s Palace.

Style Profile

What to wear: Rock’n’roll show at Lee’s Palace

My husband, Steve Singh, worked with Brendan Canning for about 2 years on his new album You Gots 2 Chill (my favourite album title of all time!) and finally it’s done and the tour has started.  Steve is a music producer and all around musical genius.  The only instrument he can’t play is cello.  He also plays with Ron Hawkins in the Do Good Assassins as well as with several other partners on various projects.  Ok, like he is just awesome.

Their big kick off gig was at Lee’s Palace, and I had to deal with the what to wear dilemma.  I texted Joe, the leader at at Fresh Collective Roncesvalles, and said I needed a dress for a rock show and I’d be there in half an hour.

When I got there, I was skeptical when he pulled out the striped tunic from Studio Fresh, but he insisted, “It’s rock ‘n’ roll!”  and showed the jewellery he had selected – two bracelets from Burfurtart’s Ch-ch-chains collection and rings from Curious Oddities.

Yeah, ok, I got it.  Joe got me out of my pretty dress comfort zone and got me thinking like an “I’m with the band” babe.

PhotoGrid_1384709086018-1

The outfit:  A-Symetry Tunic by Studio Fresh; $159; Look at me Spanx leggings, $80, Curious Oddities rings, $25, BurfurtART Ch-Ch-Ch-Chains bracelets, $65 each, Amelia boots, $268.

All available at Fresh Collective.

What I loved about this outfit, aside from how great, effortless and cool it looked, was the versatility.  I could wear the tunic to work, with a pencil skirt, with skinny jeans, belted or not.  Both bracelets convert into necklaces with an extender.  Each piece I got will be a great long term building block of my wardrobe.

I did dark red nails and lipstick, a messy ponytail and black eyeliner on top only.  Easy.

PhotoGrid_1384709308004-1Since my husband was on stage, I needed a date or two.  I called up my wogging partner/ex-boyfriend from 1993/ current lawyer, David Shiller, and my business partner at my other business (Rowanwood Daycare), Annie Chan, and we prepared to party the night away.

Oh, what’s wogging you ask?  It’s something I invented which is half-walking, half jogging and I force David to do it with me in the wee hours of the morning.  He grumbles and whines but I think he secretly loves it.

And, oh, ok, enough about me.  What was the show like?  Freakin’ awesome!  The band rocked!  Special guest stars galore!  I hung out backstage and got free beer!  I danced!  I stayed out past 2 am!

I saw old pals like Kevin Drew (who introduced me to my husband in 1998 – thanks Kev!) and Ron Hawkins as well as met new friends like the other-worldly voiced guest singer Daniela Gesundheit from Snowblink and the amazing Lisa Lobsinger.

This band is incredible.  Buy the album.  Go see the shows.  Check out all my pics from the show!  This is the future of music.

XO
