What’s a typical day like for you?

I get up early, exercise for an hour, read the newspaper over breakfast and coffee, work on editing projects half the day and writing projects the other half. I often work in local coffee shops with other writer/freelancer friends so as not to go mad.

I also have occasional volunteer commitments–one with my professional organization, and another with a cause that’s personally near and dear to me.

Later in my day, I’ll check in with my lovely grown kids, and in the evening I’ll either grab a meal at a new resto or try out a new recipe, then catch a hot new movie or binge-watch something on Netflix. My day ends with a couple of relaxing yoga poses, a mug of cocoa and some pleasure reading!

SP8

What in your life is really important to you?

I believe in living a meaningful life. (I hear you gagging. No worries–the middle grade book I’m currently writing, which has a couple Important Issues at the heart of it, is still chock-full of snark and pop culture satire.)

I also try to never take for granted my *amazing* kids and friends, all of whom are incredibly brilliant, funny and kind. And I never underestimate the restorative effects of great coffee, food and art!

What would you like to be remembered for?

For being a helper, in Mr. Rogers lingo.

For being a good mom and an all around nice/empathetic/open-minded person. (And also, if I’m being completely honest here, for being smart and funny and for writing the world’s best–meaningful + snarky–middle grade novel.)

SP4

What role does fashion play in your life?

I use fashion to express who I am. I may seem quiet and agreeable–which I am, most of the time, LOL!–but I definitely have an edgy and rebellious side.

That translates to classic cuts with interesting/unexpected details.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?
Pretty much everything in the store fits that ‘classic with an edge’ description! I also love that so many of the shop’s designers are dedicated to sustainability. (See the documentary The True Cost and you, too, will stop shopping at the big chains!)

At FC, I can get great quality pieces from local designers that will last for years, at reasonable price points.

What made you want to be one of our Style Profile Models?

Apart from it sounding like a fun way to spend a morning (it was!), I love that you’re open to featuring over-40 women in cool clothing.

In addition to wanting to spread the word about your fabulous store(s) with my network, I was totes down to help spread the message that women of a certain age can wear anything!
SP7

What was your favorite outfit of the shoot?

I’m kind of obsessed with the long black vest and the black trench–will probably return to buy the vest.

I also loved the minidress with the vaguely 70s shape. And those jeans fit unbelievably well!
SP5

What do you have that you want to promote?

First off, I want to promote the idea (again!) that age is just a number. Over-40s and over-50s can wear anything! And also do anything!

I’m more fulfilled professionally at this particular moment than at any other time in my life. I’m super-confident in my abilities and super-proud of the busy freelance editing business I’ve built.

Speaking of which, if you write fiction (for any age or genre), and you think it might be useful to get the opinion of a former in-house editor and multi-published novelist (whether you intend to submit to a traditional publisher or to self-publish), check me out at http://bevkatzrosenbaum.com/, where you’ll find info on price and procedure as well as testimonials.

As for my books, I won’t have new ones out for a couple years; Google me then if you want to read my stuff! (The old books are OP–out of print. I took a loooong break from writing while building up my freelance editing biz!)

What role does fashion play in your life?

I have always liked shopping and fashion –each spring and fall when we were kids my sister and I held our own “fashion shows” as we tried on last year’s outfits –all in the hope that we’d outgrown things and could convince our mum we needed to go shopping!

Now it’s important to me to look professional for work, but I also want to wear comfortable, well-made clothes that have something unique about them….a great print, a pop of colour, finishing details….that’s where Fresh Collective comes in!

What do you like most about being in your 40’s? Is there anything you find surprising?

I’ve always hear about it, but it really is true that as you age you care less. I care so much less about what people think about me, and I’m not at all interested in leading someone else’s life.

I’d say my 40s have finally woken me up to making sure that I live the life that I want to live. I’m finding it easier to go after the things I really want.

What’s a typical day like for you?

Oh, boy. That’s tough to answer. Every day can be so different! I get up with my almost 3 year old son, make my tea and smoothie, then somehow get my son ready for preschool and get him out the door.

Then I’ll teach 2 or 3 music classes, then run to an audition (for commercials or voiceover, usually). Then back to pick up my son from school, and get dinner started. Dinner with husband and son, then try to get to a hot yoga class (if my son will let me sneak away without too much fuss).

Or practice my ukulele or work on some songs I’m writing for a children’s album. OR just veg on the couch with my husband and our friends, Netflix and Popcorn.

SAMSUNG CSC

What in your life is really important to you?

First of all, my family and friends. Cliche, I know, but very true. I value relationships with the people in my life so very much. If I say ‘how are you?’ I really do care about your answer!

Music matters to me almost as much. Making music myself, and enjoying other people making it. I cannot imagine life without it.

I really want to make this world a more musical place. I want people to make, appreciate and support music.

What role does fashion play in your life?

To be honest, I’m not all that fashion conscious! I’m not a huge fan of shopping, as I can be hyper critical of myself, and so I find shopping quite stressful.

When I do buy something, I know I want it to last. I’m much prefer fashion that is classic, and will last a long time, rather than having to have this season’s hottest thing.

I’m super envious of people that have a strong fashion sense, it’s just never been me. But I love me a good dress. If I could wear dresses every day, I would. They are just really hard to teach in :)

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

I loved Fresh Collective from the first time I walked into the Queen West location. I love that the designers are local, the clothes last and last and they remain in my closet for years.

They are so comfortable! It’s hard to put into words, but I’ve always felt a kind of inherent positivity whenever I walk in the store.

Everyone who works there are so helpful and upbeat, but there’s something more too. I feel like the clothes are saying, ‘try me on. I’m gonna look GREAT on you’.

Tell us about your pottery business!

I began working with clay in 1997 however it wasn’t until 2006 that I officially opened my business after graduating from Sheridan College in Crafts and Design.

While I haven’t been working full time in my craft since 2011, I’m constantly designing new work, exhibiting and selling my work either through galleries or directly through shows, studio tours or special events such as the West Hamilton Artist Tour that I’m on the organizing Committee for.

I use form, texture, surface design, and colour to create contemporary ceramic works that are both an enjoyment to the eye and a pleasure to use everyday.  Recently I’ve been working on new tableware – my Tattoo Series.

These pieces are layered with decal reminiscent of tattoos featuring florals and other graphic patterns. I will be further exploring the series when I travel to China this May on a ceramics study tour and residency.

What’s a typical day like for you?

The best answer for this is that there is likely no typical day. If it is a weekday you’ll find me getting up in early in the morning, having my morning espresso and a healthy breakfast and then heading to work for a full day of busy, constant activity in the Deputy Minister’s Office in a large ministry.

Once I make it out the door at the “end” of the day,  I’ll head home to make a healthy dinner or out to do something – either the studio, aerial or out to meet friends.

Weekends are more of the same with a little less work. I like to shop and prep healthy meals on the weekend. I’m current loving Joy McCarthy’s new book Joyous Health. And of course when I need some down time I’ll hit the couch and catch up on my favourite shows on Netflix

My work schedule is somewhat irregular; I’ll work a week straight with super long hours and then have some time off in between.

My husband and I compete in fencing tournaments which often involves travelling; usually they’re within driving distance but sometimes we have the opportunity to compete internationally – we competed in the Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Championships in New Zealand last November and I plan to compete at the World Veterans Fencing Companionships in Slovenia this coming October.

In December I was elected to the Medical Commission of the International Fencing Federation; this means more travelling. What free time I do have is generally spent relaxing with my knitting.

What role does fashion play in your life?

I like to use clothing as a creative outlet; I always try to “look professional” at work but I try to mix in something unique or unexpected.

Most work days I pick out what I am going to wear the night before, because I like to give some thought to my outfit (and also because I am on a tight timeline in the mornings).

When I am packing for a trip I like to challenge myself to build a little capsule wardrobe that still allows me to have fun with my outfit choices.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

It’s great to have a store that features Canadian designers! I also love that so many of the items are distinctive; they’re not just the same old thing that is available everywhere else.

What was your favourite outfit from the shoot and why?

I loved the wrap dress; it’s simple in design, but the pattern keeps it from being boring. I also have a thing for items made from knit or stretchy fabric because they don’t wrinkle easily.

How did you get into Veterans’ fencing?

Veteran’s fencing competitions are open to fencers over the age of 40.  I actually fenced for a few years back in high school, but other sports ended up taking priority. My husband has fenced competitively for many years, and actually runs a fencing club and works as a fencing coach.

For years he has been telling me that I should get back into fencing, and back in 2014 when we were at the Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Championships in Scotland he pointed out that since I am tall and athletic that I could be good enough to compete at that level if I was willing to work hard.

In 2015 I started taking lessons and training hard and now I am ranked 6th in Canada in Veteran Women’s Epee (there are 3 different weapons in competitive fencing – foil, epee and sabre).

What’s a typical day like for you?

There’s really no typical day. The only constant is change on any given day of the week! If I’m not working with my PR clients on one of their projects, I’m writing, doing media appearances, teaching and/or preparing my lessons for my next set of classes.

How did you / when did you know that you wanted to start www.multiplemayhemmamma.com?

I had returned to work after my one year maternity leave and was struggling to make it work. I was tired and frustrated and needed a creative outlet. I wrote professionally for work, but it was all business-related so a blog about what was going on personally seemed appropriate.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

I’m often more excited about the day ahead than about spending time getting ready for it. I love quirky fashionable pieces that can stand up to busy days, that feel and fit great, and don’t take a lot of fuss to care for. My go-to at Fresh Collective are usually the dresses – they’re unique without needing accessories.  And I love supporting local designers.

Can you tell us about how you started Stone Soup Network?

I started spending time with people in the community, I learned that it takes more than grocery gift cards to feed the soul.  Canadian social and government agencies can help with covering the basics but when you can’t afford a birthday cake for your child or therapy for your bad back, isolation and depression can sink in.

The flip side is that people in the community have a passion for giving, and I would often hear things like “I just don’t know where my gifts are most needed.” The Stone Soup Network gives people an easy way to give and helps a neighbourhood of strangers become a community of care.

We make a list of locally donated products (such as movie tickets, store gift cards, and other merchandise.) and services (legal, dental, financial) available to social connectors already present in our community like social workers, religious leaders, community housing and shelter staff. The social connectors make sure the stuff gets to clients in need. As relationships of care form, lives change.

What do you have that you want to promote?

Stone Soup Network launched in the fall and has had tremendous positive feedback and support from the community. We can always use more helping hands to steer it through its pilot year.

Come talk to us if you’re a local businesses who wants to increase your social capital and experience the deep joy of being part of something transcendently good.

We’re more than happy to sign you up. We are also seeking volunteers to work for the network and lend a hand in three key areas – if you’re a social media guru, legal expert on charities, or a book-keeper with some time and passion for social justice, come and talk to us please!

We are also always looking to get in touch with social connectors in the community who may have clients for Stone Soup.    And of course, if you love the idea of Stone Soup but your plate is too full to volunteer, we can always use partners who want to support us financially.

What’s a typical day like for you?

I have a drastically different lifestyle from week to week.

I am a single mother with joint custody of a toddler son, and we share our time with one week on and one week off.

So during my ‘Mom’ week, my entire day is structured around caring for my child, and finding things that would be fun for him.

On those weeks my days start early and end early with him and end early, my lights out by 10:00.  When I don’t have the wee one I like to keep in shape, pursue artistic goals and hang out with friends.
