I love Peggy Nash! I’m very interested in women in leadership roles, and the first time I met Peggy in our shop, I was so impressed with how lovely she is in person and her commitment to shopping local and supporting local businesses. She is stylish, elegant and always looks comfortable and relatable. She’s been a regular customer of ours for years and I’m proud that we outfit one of our leaders.
– Laura-Jean, CEO and founder of Fresh Collective
Name: Peggy Nash
Occupation: Member of Parliament
Lifestyle: Very active, sporty
What’s a typical day like for you? Up by 6am, read the news, go for a run, quickly get ready and then usually in first meeting at 8am. In Ottawa there is a core schedule of committee meetings, House Duty, Question Period, then other events and meetings are slotted in between. In Toronto, I try to get to as many community meetings, events and activities possible, while also meeting with constituents at my office. Every day is different. I commute between the two cities every week when the House is sitting. What in your life is really important to you? My family is the priority: My husband Carl and I have three sons, and now this year we are thrilled to have a lovely grandson, Carter. My Mom is elderly but quite independent. But I also need to be working to the max – I’m a people person who enjoys being out in the world, learning new things, and being able to make positive change.
What would you like to be remembered for? I hope to be remembered as a person of integrity, who, through hard work and perseverance provided strong representation in our community, and made a difference for people.
What role does fashion play in your life? I need to feel confident when I’m in the media or anywhere in public. I enjoy fashion but I usually need to have a business look.
What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? I love the beautiful Canadian designs, Canadian-made clothes. The follks at Fresh always give helpful advice – no hard sell. I always find what I’m looking for.
What are you up to these days, what do you want us to know? Well I recently bought this beautiful skirt with dalmatians on it (see below), that I thought was perfect for the Master Mechanic event to promote my bill to end animal cruelty. There were dogs everywhere. That bill is before the House. But mainly I want to promote Canadian talent, and boost support for Canadian jobs. We can’t and shouldn’t compete with low wage countries to be the cheapest. We can compete with smart design and good quality.
Is there anything else we should know about you? I’m a real movie buff. I’m a member of the Revue Cinema and I love the TIFF Lightbox.
Where can people find you on social media? Besides twitter @peggynashNDP and Facebook I have a twice monthly e-newsletter to update what I am doing and what’s coming up – you can sign up at www.peggynash.ndp.ca
