What’s a typical day like for you?

I’ve got a very strange life, and there really isn’t much “typical” about it.  The only thing that is typical is that I wake up every day!

If I am “on contract”, my day would likely include a rehearsal or two, maybe a costume fitting if I’m in an opera.

If I’m at home, after I wake up, my husband hands me a coffee (very necessary, very appreciated!), we get our 11-year old daughter, Phoibe, out the door to school, I will teach a few lessons at the University of Toronto where I am a sessional voice teacher.

Often, I am multi-tasking like a crazy person between teaching, performing and managing the family schedule!

My daughter swims with the Toronto Swim Club and is now swimming 4 times a week, as well as taking piano lessons, so we are constantly on the go!

What role does fashion play in your life?

Fashion is quite important in my life.  As an opera singer, you have to have gowns for concert performances, “make a good impression” first day of rehearsal outfits, something splashy for an opening night outfit, but for rehearsing an opera, your director might have you rolling around on the ground, so you have to have more casual clothing.

Being in the arts, the more you can make your wardrobe unique or funky or interesting, and put together, the better an impression you make.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

I love coming into Fresh Collective and seeing what great Canadian fashion designers are doing – I love the individuality and creativity of the clothes and the jewellery.

And the staff are always so great – they help me put together outfits, give me honest feedback and point me toward the sale items.

How did you become a opera singer?

I did an undergraduate degree in Music Education at the University of Western Ontario, but somewhere along the way, the performing bug bit me, and I decided to pursue it as a career, but I had absolutely NO clue as to what that entailed!

I started off my performing training doing a post-graduate diploma in voice performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England, then I was lucky enough to audition for and be accepted into the Canadian Opera Company’s young artist programme, and from then I have been performing professionally.. almost 20 years now!

What is your favourite song to sing?

If we are talking about opera, I have to say that the aria “Quando m’en vo” from Puccini’s opera La bohème is a favourite, but if its just singing around the house, its anything by Adele!

What do you have that you want to promote?

I’m doing several projects this spring – I’m débuting a new work by Gary Kulesha called “From the Diary of Virginia Woolf” with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, I’m soloist with the Ottawa Symphony (Mahler 2ndSymphony), the Grand Philharmonic Choir, Kitchener (Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis), Pax Christi Chorale, Toronto (Elgar’s The Apostles), Music of the Baroque, Chicago (Telemann The Day of Judgement), and the world première of a new opera by Aaron Gervais, Oksana G, with Tapestry Opera, Toronto.
