What’s a typical day like for you?

First, I wake up and move! Morning movement is an important start to my day, followed by a mostly-regular meditation practice. I have a good balance between clinic days when I am in the office, working one-on-one with patients on their mental and physical health, and days when I work from home writing, researching, studying, and planning the next workshop or retreat. In the summertime, you’ll find me barefoot in a park after work.

What in your life is really important to you?

Nature, movement, authenticity, and connection. I notice I get antsy when it’s been too long since I last had a good hike, workout, or exposure to raw nature.

Staying authentic requires constant reconnection to myself and those that inspire me to be my best self. I’ve learned to prioritize these things above other things that clamour for my attention and energy, and to let go of the rest. You can’t be everything to everyone.

What would you like to be remembered for?

Making people feel safe and brave enough to grow through difficulties. I’ve found a way to do this in my work, creating safety and acceptance in a healing space for people to address physical and mental concerns, and in my personal life. I’d like to leave the earth even just a little bit cleaner, greener, and happier.

What role does fashion play in your life?

It’s a creative force. I love exploring expression through movement (ecstatic dance anyone?) and fashion is an extension of that for me. I typically dress very simply on a day-to-day basis, but there are times when I have fun celebrating with clothing and aesthetic.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

How unique it is here! I feel the self-expression comes out easier when there are such unique pieces. The fact that they use local designers is great, and they do a lot of cool community-building work that I think is so very important.

What do you have that you want to promote?

I want people to know there are effective integrative non-pharmaceutical treatments for mood, anxiety, and mental health that can help you, whether you’re already on medications or not.

If you’re wary of medications, or unhappy with the results or side effects, I want you to be empowered with knowing there is an approach to help support your body and mind, that looks at WHY you are struggling in the first place, and works to correct underlying root causes, not cover them up. As an example, you can read this article on what really causes depression to learn more about the integrative approach.

What area of treatment do you specialize in at Darou?

I help people who are struggling with mood, stress, anxiety, and other issues like bipolar, PMS, PMDD, and OCD. It’s all connected with hormones, the immune system and the gut, so inevitably I search out the root causes which end up being things like auto-immune conditions, overactive stress response, inflammation, food sensitivities, nutritional deficiencies, and other things. I love the investigative work to find the causes, and helping people get past them.

What are some common misconceptions that people have about naturopathic medicine?
People don’t always understand what naturopathic medicine is, and I don’t blame them because there is some misinformation out there. We look at a person and seek to heal using evidence-based treatments (typically non-pharmaceutical, although in some places NDs use drugs), but we are unique for 2 main reasons:
The first is that our medicine is based on different guiding principles: 1) medicine starts with educating and empowering the patient, 2) look at a person as a whole, and 3) find and treat the root cause (there are 6 principles total). I want a person to understand their illness, what causes it or contributes to it, and how they can help themselves beyond taking pills and supplements.

The second reason is that the model is set up for us to spend time with our patients and understand how every symptom, and every system is connected. The medicine is designed to integrate with conventional medicine, not against it.

What are the benefits of seeking medical treatment at a clinic like Darou Wellness?

A lot of the time insurance plans will cover my services. I’ve even had patients have their supplements and blood tests covered, but you need to check with your insurance provider to be sure. This is a place to come for acute concerns (like panic and severe depression), but also for prevention and education. If you’re wondering things like if your heavy periods are connected to your mood changes, or if your digestive concerns can flare your anxiety, I’m here to talk and share with you. We also do weird and wonderful workshops and community events. Darou is a cool space to hang out in!
