What’s a typical day like for you? Typical?!? Ha! Days start with a walk with the dog, then espresso. Mondays and Fridays I can be found at the Artists’ Health Centre at Toronto Western Hospital. Tuesday mornings I volunteer at Ronald McDonald House. Tuesday afternoons and Thursdays I see clients at my home clinic. Wednesdays and any spare moment are dedicated to my studies. I’m working toward an MSc in Advanced Complementary Medicine – Research & Practice. I may have a workshop somewhere in there as well. Weekends I relax with my amazing husband and dog.
What in your life is really important to you? Aside from my family and friends and getting the most out of life, what is important to me is that I find the courage to face any challenge put before me. It is through facing challenges, pushing our boundaries and stepping outside our comfort zone that we grow and learn and experience wonderful new things.
What would you like to be remembered for? Professionally, I’d like to contribute to the evidence-base for shiatsu. I’ve had some research published and would like to do much more. Personally, I’d like to be remembered as an open-minded, open-hearted person.
What role does fashion play in your life? Fashion is a way to express oneself. It’s an outward manifestation of who we are.
What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? The designers featured at Fresh Collective create beautiful, feminine designs that are still fun and whimsical. I love that it’s almost entirely Canadian designers.
What do you have that you want to promote? I work at the Artists Health Centre (AHC), an integrative clinic at Toronto Western Hospital, and I believe I’m the only shiatsu therapist employed by a hospital in Canada. The AHC is open to anyone who works in the performing or creative arts. All of our practitioners specialize in serving the unique needs of artists – we’re like a sports medicine clinic for artists. We have a subsidy program, so that even those who can’t afford our services can get the care they need. Know an artist? Tell them about us: www.artistshealth.com.
I also provide workshops for manual therapists, other health practitioners, and the general public. I’ve presented across Canada, in Australia and Cuba. I am extremely knowledgeable about many health conditions, CAM research and can teach you how to better manage your health. For further details go to: www.leisabellmore.com.
I have been a volunteer at Ronald McDonald House Toronto since 2001. I offer short shiatsu treatments to families staying there who are in Toronto to get medical treatment for a seriously ill child. RMHT provides a home away from home for as many as 81 families per night. Many stay for months at a time. Consider donating to or volunteering for this amazing organization.
Is there anything else we should know about you? It’s not all work! In my spare time I have fun cooking, eating, rock-climbing, reading, travelling and playing hide-and-seek with our dog.
