banner1-borderLifestyle: Pretty much what you’d expect from a graduate student. My life mostly involves reading, writing, and teaching. But I also try to treat being a graduate student like a job, and so I try to keep a 9-5 schedule during the week and take 1-2 days off on the weekend. In my downtime I ride my bike as much as possible, have dinner with friends and loved ones, and do some pleasure reading.

What’s a typical day like for you as a teacher?

I try to get all of my teaching prep done at least a day or two in advance so that I don’t have to scramble the morning of teaching. In the course that I’ve been TAing for three years now, we have a tradition of getting a drink at a local pub nearby at the end of the teaching day, which is an awesome way to unwind and get to know one another.

What in your life is really important to you?

Community-building. I’ve lived in communal homes where we’ve shared groceries and chores, I love attending potlucks, and am currently volunteering with this amazing non-profit StoryPlanet. As a queer intersectional feminist, building long-lasting relationships that work to challenge systems of oppression is a driving force in the work that I do.banner 3- border

What would you like to be remembered for by your students?

My ability to make them feel like they can take risks in the class. In academia, the “survival of the fittest” narrative is all too prevalent. Thus students feel like they have to pretend that they understand everything and never admit when they’re struggling — either for personal or academic reasons. I try to encourage my students to admit when they don’t “get it” and hope that they’ll be able to see the strength in admitting their vulnerability.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

In the past I would have said: inspiring a love for reading literature and an understanding that literature provides us with valuable lessons about how to act ethically in the world. I still believe that, but after finishing my first position as a Course Instructor in a class called Queer Writing, I realized that the most rewarding part of my job — or at least that experience — was seeing the community that came into being as a result.banner 2 border

What role does fashion play in your life as a teacher?

This is definitely something I spend a lot of time thinking about and have written about on my blog (“How to Dress in Academia and Not Feel Like You’re Dead Inside.”) As a heavily tattooed woman, I don’t want to wear clothes that don’t represent my personality just because I believe it will help me command greater authority in the classroom. So I’ll probably never go to class in an overly formal outfit. I try to strike a balance between playful and “you still need to respect me.” This often results in fun prints, tailored cuts, and lots of vintage/vintage-inspired looks.margeaux6

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

I really love how the salespeople want to get to know you and what drives your fashion choices so that they can recommend items that speak to you. I also love how body-positive everyone is. They won’t try to force you to buy something that really isn’t working for your body type, but will genuinely cheer you on when you find that perfect piece.
