20 Days of Giveaways – Day 10!

CONTEST NOW CLOSED. GOOD LUCK TO OUR ENTRANTS

Modern care for the laundry you love.

As you may well know, Soak was created by knitwear designer Jacqueline Sava. Originally intended as a wool wash, Soak has since expanded its empire to include the care of all of your most precious clothing items. Whether you are pampering your loveliest lingerie, softest sweater, leggings, tights or a delicate dress, Soak has you covered.

Our mission is to support you in wearing the things you love most. We found that people often don’t wear their favourite sweater, whether cashmere or vintage reconstructed, as often as they’d like, because they feared washing it. With Soak, your treasured tops are safe.

Soak is perfect for hand-washing.

Add about a teaspoon (or capful, or swirl) of Soak to a basin of cool water. If you don’t like using your only sink for Soaking (sometimes someone else really wants to brush their teeth at the exact moment your dress got dunked), check out our basins, Carrie and Phil

They’re perfect for Soaking. Make sure there is enough water around the garment to fully saturate it with water. The flow of the water helps move Soak around, gathering all the sweat and dirt from your garment. Use room temperature water. Hot water isn’t ideal, it makes too many suds, plus it’s bad news for wool. (Ever wondered how a cute wool sweater felts? Hot water.) Cold water isn’t comfortable for your hands, and after all, we’re trying to make the Soaking experience fun.

Let your garments Soak for about 15 minutes. Swish the water around. Check out how much dirt is lifting from the garment by accessing the colour of the water. If you’re washing vintage (or a favourite sweater for the first time) you may have lots of dirt in the water. In that case, rinse and repeat. Otherwise, after you’ve Soaked, carefully lift the garment out of the water, squeeze gently and remove excess water by rolling the item carefully in a towel. Make sure you support the weight of the garment with your hands, don’t let the weight of the water pull on the garment- especially vintage items, as older seams can be delicate.

Place your garment to dry, as per the instructions on it. Hang dresses and shirts, lay knits flat to dry. In any case, make sure the fabrics aren’t under duress when they’re put to dry. The weight of the water can pull or distort your favourite fashions.

You’ll be back in action with your favourite frock sooner than you had ever imagined. Clean clothes last longer. Frequent washing helps extend the life of your wardrobe. This is especially important for those timeless treasures you’ve purchased at Fresh Collective.

Not up for hand-washing? Soak is perfect in the machine, even an HE washer. Every week when I do my laundry, the rough stuff goes in with the heavy duty detergent, the super fine stuff gets hand-washed with Soak, and my favourite washable gems are tossed in the machine, on the delicate, cold cycle with Soak. My favourite t-shirts, little dresses, workout gear, tights and sweaters have never been happier.

We wish you a happy, fresh and well-dressed holiday season, from all of us at Soak!

20 Days of Giveaways – Day 8!

THIS CONTEST NOW CLOSED.

It’s Day 8 of our 20 Days of Giveaways fun! Today we offer you the chance to win 2 tickets to see singer/songwriter Liam Titcomb this Friday (December 7th) at the wonderful Hugh’s Room as he celebrates the release of his latest album Cicada.

Liam was kind enough to answer a little Q&A for Fresh Collective. Here’s what he had to share:

Tell us a bit about your latest album Cicada. What is the significance of the title and how does it translate to the songs on the record?
The title came from the song of the same name. I was inspired by Nashville’s 13 year cicada cycle to write a song using that word and their cycle as a metaphor for emotions laying dormant and coming back as strong as they ever were. I later realized that the cicada’s cycle also kind of applied to how I felt in music career, it had been about 5 years since I’d put out a record so I had a feeling of coming back around again.

You just got back from a tour across Canada. What is your favourite part of being on the road? What’s your least favourite?
Favourite part would be just the pure elation you feel when you’re playing in a great venue to a great audience. There’s nothing like it and it’s the one single reason that keeps me coming back for more. Least favourite is the last week of tour when all you want to do is go home and you know you’re still a week away… Oh, and in Canada, I hate the driving. Too looooong.

What do you love about the city of Toronto?
So many things! It’s funny, being a musician who travels to a lot of great other cities, I’m always preparing for the day that I come home and think Toronto isn’t that great but it still hasn’t happened. I love how multicultural it is. I love that you can find good food at an affordable price. I love the music scene. I love Queen west and Kensington market. There’s too many things to list!

What is your relationship to fashion? Would you say you have a signature style?
I have a big appreciation for good design. My mother and my sister have always had an interest so I learned by osmosis through them. There’s nothing like a well cut piece of clothing that sends a little unique statement out into the world. If I have a signature style, I guess I’d say it’s a mix between world war 2 era, simple, american made, utilitarian clothing and artsy fartsy with a dash of the 70s thrown in for good measure? Maybe? Hard to pin your own style. If it’s fairly simple and well made, I’m usually sold.

2012 has been a great year for you, what’s in store for 2013? Any resolutions?
Hmm, I’d have to think. I have lots of personal, musical career goals that I’m set on achieving, Like, touring in the states and europe. This new album is the first time I’ve had an international release so it’s really important to me to get out into the world with it. I’ve also decided that I want to start treating my body better. I recently got a gym membership and have been watching what I eat. It’s incredibly easy to slide into an unhealthy lifestyle with this job but you feel so much better when you’re taking care of yourself. If I can’t sleep regularly, I might as well try to eat well.

20 Days of Giveaways – Day 3

Welcome to DAY 3!

One of the things I’ve become a big champion for here at Fresh Collective is tying in a love of music to our personality. We are all massive lovers and supporters of music, and it’s a huge part of many of our lives.

As a business that supports local designers it only makes sense that we would extend our support to other areas of the arts – so I’ve taken on building that into our online and in-store experience as a passion project, partnering with Rdio to create monthly indie music playlists, creating playlists for our stores and dressing local talent for big events in Fresh Collective!

When this 20 days idea came to me, I immediately wanted to reach out to the local music community and involve them. Brad Fillatre is an old friend and an incredibly talented musician. I was a huge fan of his previous band The Evelyn Room so I was intrigued to hear over the last year that he was working on some solo stuff. When I finally heard it I was blown away. This EP is stunning. I got in touch with Brad and asked him if he’d answer a quick Q&A for Fresh Collective and perhaps give us a copy of For Your Weakness to give away for the holidays – being the awesome guy he is, he was more than happy to oblige!

Q&A with Brad Fillatre:

You began recording “For Your Weakness” in early 2011. Tell us a little about the journey from that time to the record’s release this October.
I started the recording process during the winter of 2011 and it took most of the year to complete.  I was prepared to release the record independently around this time last year when I was approached by a local independent label. I put everything on hold for a few month until I could figure things out, then in February I signed. Once the deal was done we went back and made a few slight adjustments to what was already completed and finally released the EP in October of this year.

In 2009 your band The Evelyn Room made the NXNE (North by North East) shortlist for bands to watch that year. What was the catalyst in the decision to go from a band format to a solo singer/songwriter project?
I loved being in bands but needed the experience of doing things on my own and at my own pace.

I had to try something new. With a bunch of songs already written and a few new ones in the works I quickly started to piece things together.

Can you tell us a bit about the single “Face in the Dark?” How did that song come about and what does it mean to you?
“Face The Dark” came out pretty quickly in comparison to most songs I’ve written. The song expresses some of the thoughts and emotions that one may encounter when suffering from a broken heart.

What are some Canadian artists you admire (in any medium)?
I admire any Canadian artist who has been able to make a living doing what they love. I also admire the musicians who have been able to sustain life-long carriers and remain relevant. Bands like Blue Rodeo.

What is your relationship with fashion? What are your thoughts on personal style?
I’m pretty much a jeans, jean jacket, plaid shirt, leather jacket, kinda guy. As long as it fits right and is either black, navy blue, or grey I’m good.

I do appreciate a good pair of jeans.
