“Years ago I met one Jennifer Heerschaap. We were young, impressionable, enjoyed a great bottle of wine – many actually – probably did some questionable things and all the while cemented an unbreakable bond of friendship. She is on of my best friends and I was one of her bridesmaids AND WE’RE STILL BEST FRIENDS. Yup! Over time we have weathered our ups and downs, always supporting each other. Taking care of each other. Sadly as time goes by life happens. Worlds get more full; lives get crazier, responsibilities gets bigger. We now live far apart and as we grow older it gets harder to find time for a simple phone call let alone actually getting together. Yet in tough times she has always been there for me. This is a woman who has championed her friends, co-workers and family. She is a rock we all lean on for her inner strength and compassion. We all know life can throw you some serious lemons. Recently she quietly and gracefully weathered the death of her father who was tragically taken from her in the fall. She was a rock for her mother and sister, her daughters, her husband and all those around her. She deserves someone to take care of her. Give her something special. Give her one day that’s just for herself.” – GILLIAN Z

winner michelle

“I nominate my friend Michelle Mastrandrea for a FRESH AWARD. She deserves a medal–every day! Michelle works as an instructor therapist (IT) at a centre for children with autism. What does she “do” every day? Well, some days she gets bitten, punched or slapped (or all three). She often has part of someone’s lunch on her clothes or in her hair. She follows and designs lesson plans specific to each child–because every child is unique. She helps children to learn and communicate–children and their families. She makes children smile. In short, she enriches the lives of children with challenges much bigger than they are. She calls them her “kids”; she treats every one of them with respect and love. When one of her kids is successful, you can’t wipe the smile off of Michelle’s face or shake the excitement out of her. She really works for them. She is one special woman.

Michelle is also busy furthering her education, working towards a Masters of Education degree concurrent to her full-time job. She knows there is so much more she can do, so she’s working harder!

I’ve known Michelle for almost 17 years. I’m so, very proud of her. She has always made time and effort to be a good friend, a great daughter and sister. When I’ve needed a pep talk or just someone to sit beside me for support–or a friend to have a dance party with–I haven’t had to ask Michelle, because she’s been right there.

I think she needs to know how awesome she is. In the last year, due to eating healthier and taking up the incredibly fun activity of hula hooping, Michelle has actually lost quite a bit of weight. She did a closet purge a short time ago and barely has any clothing left that fits her! I can’t think of a better woman to win a Fresh award AND get some new clothes for her amazing self.”TRELLAWNY G.

winner pam

“I would like to nominate my mother-in-law and friend Pam Hyatt. I think she is an inspiring, gorgeous, and very dynamic candidate for your award. Pam is a prolific performer in Toronto’s jazz and cabaret scene and would benefit enormously from the opportunity to expand her wardrobe, which as an independent artist, from a family of artists, is not always a financially attainable feat .

Pam is a Toronto-based professional actress, singer, song-writer, comedienne. She has worked in Toronto and Vancouver as an independent artist for over 50 years, producing and performing her own one-woman cabaret acts in a plethora of local clubs and venues including most recently the Rivoli, the Annex Live, Green Door Cabaret and Hugh’s Room. She has appeared in numerous stage plays, television shows and films including the Nat King Cole Show and CBC’s variety show A La Carte. Pam was instrumental in starting Toronto’s performing arts lodge, a rent-geared-to income residence for performing artists.

At almost 77 she is a force to be reckoned with and is currently writing her own material for a new autobiographical cabaret act. She appears regularly at Girls Night Out, a weekly jazz jam night organized by Lisa Particelli and is a frequent guest artist at JAZZ FM fundraisers.

This last October 2012, At the age of 76, Pam released her debut CD, PAMALOT! to a sold-out crowd. She self-produced, fundraised, arranged and directed the entire project using social media to reach out to fans and supporters. She attracts a broad range of audiences to her work, ranging from children, teens, showbiz colleagues and seniors with her wit and contagious charm and honesty. As Jaymz Bee (on-air host at JAZZ FM Toronto) says of Pam “If we were in England we would call Pam Dame Hyatt.”

Pam is a loving Mum of two sons, Carson T. Foster and Zack ward and Mum-in-Law to me, Heather Jones Foster. She is a touchstone and enthusiastic supporter of everyone and everything creative, and has been known to show up at Metal concerts at the Bovine; make stews for the Occupy Protest and even run for mayor of Toronto. She is generous and giving to family, friends and strangers without expecting anything in return.”HEATHER J.

Love Letter from Laura-Jean: Getting to know YOU

love letter copy

At Fresh Collective we are all about YOU!

To us, YOU are the most fascinating creature alive, and we are ready to listen to whatever you have to tell us. You, our customer base, are AMAZING!

We really get that you are the coolest women in Toronto, and we just want to know more! We know you’re individualists. You may or may not be concerned with trends, but you love to look current, polished and cool. You have busy lives (not unlike us who work here and design the products!) and so you need versatile and comfortable clothes and accessories and you also want to look awesome and feel like your outer self reflects your inner self.

We are embarking on a project of growth for Fresh Collective, growing to several locations in Toronto (and then going beyond!) and we’re asking for your support. Our vision is that Fresh Collective revolutionizes the fashion industry in North America and that Toronto is the center of that.

What’s going on now in the fashion industry at large is that a lot of women are left not feeling good about their options or how the fashion industry makes us feel about ourselves. There’s a lot of concern about “fast fashion” – the cheap trendy pieces that go out of style fast – and what it does for the environment. There’s also concern about working conditions in factories. Alongside this, there are well known stats of how often small businesses fail. I believe a lot of people WANT to shop local, and then just find they don’t get what they want so it’s easy to go for a cheaper or more convenient option. This disenchantment is a factor in a lot of these business failures. Customers don’t get what they want and business owners are afraid to really ask, for fear they will hear something they don’t want to hear. The way things are going, local businesses close every day.

If we let things play out as they usually do, many of the smaller independent designers we work with will decide to go out of business. I’ve seen many, many do just that over the ten years we’ve been running Fresh Collective; eventually Fresh Collective would go out of business. I would retire, or get too old to keep going and it would all wind down. That’s just the usual way.

In the face of all this, I see something different for our future. I see Fresh Collective growing to many, many locations, each selling a wonderful mix of independent designers work; each a hub of creativity and beauty in the neighbourhoods. Each store is staffed by committed, passionate and fun store staff who know the customers by name, help them get exactly what they want and help them feel transformed, beautiful and self expressed every day.

We see a future where Fashion Grads can build a career in starting their own line, being creative and fulfilled and getting the the support they need to connect with customers in our shops. We see a future where communities are vibrant and full of character, where Fresh Collective locations can thrive all over Toronto with more and more local designers growing and succeeding with us. We see Fresh Collective providing a model for other small businesses to grow and thrive and maintain their character, and Toronto being a better place for lots of reasons because of what we create together. I see Fresh Collective outliving me, as we are working to build a solid business structure that can live on into the future for ALL the people- staff, designers and customers, who have made it what it is.

We are asking for your involvement to make this happen. We just want to know all about you so we can meet your needs better and you can shop with us more often!

What do you want from us? What do you love about us? What frustrates you about us? What can we do to make you happy? Tell us about your jobs, your kids, your lives and give us the clues to make sure Fresh Collective is exactly what you want!

Know that in taking the time to do this, you’re really part of a fashion revolution, a small business revolution and you’re very much part of shaping the future.

I’m really serious when we say we’re here to listen, and each survey will get a personal answer from me. Thank you very much in advance for your time. We couldn’t do it without you!

FRESH AWARDS: Voting now open!

fresh nominees

Over the past week I’ve been so happy to receive nominations and learn about some incredible, incredible women.

These 6 ladies have been nominated by some very special friends; friends who want the world to see how amazing the women in their life are! Help us celebrate these women (and all great women in our lives) by clicking the photo above, LIKING the Fresh Collective Facebook page and LIKING the photo of the woman of your choice in the nominee photo album (and yes, you can like each and every one of them).

I also invite you to take time today to acknowledge the special women in your life that inspire you every day. At Fresh Collective we are so committed to celebrating the beauty, courage and strength of real women all over the world. It starts with you and me!

That said I’d like to take the time to acknowledge my sister, Katie. She’s always been my “little” sister as she’s 6 years younger than me, but I’ve recently realized that there is nothing “little” about her. She’s an amazing young woman with a big heart and an amazing dream.

Last summer, Katie’s beloved dog Miya went missing, and even this many months later she has NOT given up her search for her pup. She has campaigned and hunted and raised awareness since day one, without faltering.
Even more amazing? The dog in the photo above is not Miya. This is Nala. Katie got a call that there was a boxer in a shelter that could be Miya. When she went to see if it was her, she met Nala instead, and she adopted her – not able to leave this sweet pup behind. Even still with this new love in her life, she continues her search for Miya, and is working on creating a business to help reunite loving owners with their missing dogs so no one else has to go through the heartbreak she’s experienced.
My sister is a hero, and I’m so proud to have her in my life.
Please click the photo below to like Katie’s page for Miya and share the search with us.
