What’s a typical day like for you? I like to wake up before my boys (ages 6 and 4) to catch a few minutes to myself and prepare for the day ahead. I walk my boys to school and then spend my mornings getting tasks completed around the house and hitting the gym. My boys come home for lunch and after I walk them back to school I spend my afternoons focusing on my clients, marketing, business planning and networking. After school you can find us at the park burning off some energy before supper. Lately, we’ve logging some serious time with Lego and board games in the evening to help the boys get ready for bed. Once they are asleep,  most evenings involve catching up on e-mail, a cup of tea,  spending some time with my husband and an early bedtime. Ok, so maybe there is some Netflix in there too…..not every night though, I swear!

What in your life is really important to you? Right now I’m focusing a lot of time and energy on achieving patience and grace throughout my day. In order to do that I’ve made exercise, sleep and healthy eating priorities. I’m a way nicer person and a much better mom when I look after myself.

Tunic: Dania Tunic – Desserts and Skirts, $125; Pants: Essential Leggings- SPANX, $99; Boots: Bloom Boot – Miz Mooz, $295; Necklace: Colleen Poitras $75; Bag: Jeane and Jax $45

What would you like to be remembered for? I’m extremely fortunate to have been invited into the lives of hundreds of families through The Sugar Plum Sleep Co.  I absolutely love helping families achieve better sleep and my hope is that they remember me as knowledgable, compassionate, and encouraging.

(Above) Rebecca Earl talks about what she’s passionate about:  Helping families get better sleep with her company Sugar Plum Sleep Co.

What role does fashion play in your life? I wear a lot of different hats during the day so my clothing needs to work hard by being comfortable and able to transition from one place to another. I’m also a big fan of colour and like to wear pieces that have some energy and personality.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? I love supporting small Canadian business and Fresh Collective does an amazing job of showcasing talented local designers. The staff are also great at helping you find exactly what you need.

Top: Wallis Slouch Tee – Mandala Design, $68; Skirt: Gloria Solid Flip Skirt – Mandala Design, $88; Necklace: BurfurtArt $48; Shoes: Elaine (Cobalt)- Miz Mooz, $190

What do you have that you want to promote? My goal is to improve the quality of sleep for the entire family, so I’m excited to announce that this Fall I’ll be launching Sleep School for adults. The program is designed to help individuals make realistic and lasting changes to their sleep habits. The program includes a detailed  a detailed sleep guide for adults with weekly challenges; participation in a private Facebook support group; access to a private sleep tracking tool;  individual follow up support of progress; and a bedtime essentials sleep kit that includes my favourite items to support a restful night’s sleep. Sign up for my newsletter to be the first to know when this program launches.

Is there anything else we should know about you? I have a serious sweet tooth (chocolate covered almonds make everything better); I’m an only child (most likely because I never slept through the night until I was 2); and I always dance like no one is watching.

Fresh Collective Style Profile – Sophia Perlman

I met Sophia last year, when she sent us a picture of herself performing in a Paper People Clothing dress similar to the one she is modeling here.  We chatted a bit through Facebook several times about various things and just got to know each other through there.  She told me how much she LOVES Fresh Collective, and how she has bought a lot from us over the years, and it just seemed a natural match to feature her as a Style Profile model, especially given the launch of her tour!  Make sure you check out this lovely lady at a gig near you soon!

– Laura-Jean Bernhardson, CEO and founder of Fresh Collective

Name: Sophia Perlman

Occupation: Singer, musician, teacher and creative co-consipriator

Age: 29

Lifestyle: Always on an adventure of some kind.

Style Coach Notes: When Sophia isn’t performing, her lifestyle is pretty casual, so this dress is great. It doubles as a tunic, and can be worn with leggings or skinny jeans. (Dress: Panel Tee dress – Desserts and Skirts $88, Necklace: Hand inked & dyed turquoise locket – Curious Oddities $32, Shoes: Lonna T-bar – Hush Puppies $100)

What’s a typical day like for you? A typical day means that it wasn’t anything like any other day I’ve had, and will probably not be like any other day to follow! Some days I’m performing, other days I’m teaching (everything from Kindergarten to College), or living my double  life as my own booking agent/manager/publicist. Rare days are the ones where I get to hide out at home and practice or work on my songwriting – when the weather’s nice, I’ll take Tallulah – my precious junk-shop rescue accordion out and find somewhere outside to sing and practice (which I think my neighbour upstairs much prefers to my staying home!). Most days will be a combination of some or all of the above. I have a hard time keeping still at the best of times. Luckily my husband Adrean, who is also a musician, is really grounded and patient and into doing things one at a time. He helps me remember to slow down and keeps me grounded!

Fresh Collective Style Profile – Jennifer Lee Dawson

Jennifer “Big Deal” Dawson is on the Board of Fashion Group International Toronto with me and she is just the sweetest person you could hope to meet!  Jennifer’s role at FGI is member relations- meeting new members or potential members at our events and getting to know them while representing FGI.  If you’re interested in making some great connections with a supportive and friendly bunch of dedicated fashion professionals (and creative professionals from related industries) come check out one of our events that happen the last Tuesday of every month, and find the lovely Jennifer Dawson to ask her about what membership has to offer!

– Laura-Jean Bernhardson, CEO and founder of Fresh Collective

Name:  Jennifer Lee Dawson

Occupation:  Professor/ Big Deal Dawson Owner

Age: 30

Lifestyle: Marathon Runner, World Traveller, Brand Evangelist, Masters in Education, Digital Media Expert, Vintage Fashion Obsessed, & former Beauty Queen.

Style Coach Notes: A maxi dress is a must for hot summer days, and the dramatic print of this one suits Jennifer’s style to a tee! This dress is flattering on many different figures because of the band under the bust, the low neck and then the cut of the skirt. It flows over tummies and hips just right and creates a long lean line.

What’s a typical day like for you?  It always differs, but I try to start my day with a morning run to get my energy flowing. From there my days are usually filled with client meetings, lunches, work, and various fashion events in the evenings.  I never have a boring day which is why I LOVE Toronto because there is never a dull moment in this electrifying city.

What in your life is really important to you?  Family.  I am the eldest of six children and have a very loving relationship with my 3 brothers and 2 sisters. They mean the world to me.

What would you like to be remembered for?  I would always like to be remembered as the girl who made all of her wildest dreams come true.  I live my life to the fullest and truly believe that anything is possible. Continue reading

Style Profile – Amanda Lee Caskie

In this style profile we feature Amanda Lee Caskie. I reached out to her to do a profile with us because she’s a local entrepreneur with a flair for fashion. Amanda, or Jubilee as I like to call her, plays roller derby with me and she’s one of my closest friends. I have had the pleasure of having her do my hair several times, and she’s always wowed me with her amazing techniques. If you’re looking for the best hair you’ve ever had, I suggest you see Amanda at The Joint Hair Salon!

Dress: Kladis leopard – Bionic by Mark Foreman $119.00
Shoes: Lonna T-bar in Black – Hush Puppies $100.00
Earrings: Curious Oddities $22.00
Necklace: Curious Oddities $30.00

Amanda isn’t used to unleashing her inner pin up girl, yet she did it so well in this sassy leopard number! We went for neutral colours for all of her outfits so her pink hair would be the colour accent. This leopard dress with the curved bottom, curved sleeves, low neckline and fitted waist shows off Amanda’s lovely shape kept fit from all her roller derby.

What’s a typical day like for you?
I wake up, check my roller derby email (I am part of Toronto Roller Derby and have been involved with it for 8 years. I play on our all star team CN Power). It’s my second, unpaid job!! I am my league’s liaison with the WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) and I also hold 3 jobs with them. Sheesh right? I then get ready for my real job and head to The Joint Hair Salon and do hair! I am there 5 days a week. Two days a week I add on an additional 3 hours and head up to Downsview for roller derby practice and at least once a week I do some strength training with my coach Ron at ironliontraining.com. Then I head home and crash!

What in your life is really important to you?
My mom, my business, my family (blood, work and derby), roller derby, strength training, personal downtime and taking care of myself both physically and mentally.

What would you like to be remembered for?
My work, my business, my loyalty in friendship and life in general. My mark in the roller derby world.

Dress: Linen Shirt Dress – Atelier B $164.00
Belt: Ch-Ch-Ch-Chains Belt – BurfurtArt (also converts to necklace) $85.00
Tights and Boots: Amanda’s own

The linen shirt dress is a minimal blank canvas, so we made it more “Amanda” by adding the chain belt. We styled the outfit with her own motorcycle boots. Again, a trim shape that shows off her waist works for Amanda, and the A-line skirt creates even more of an hourglass shape.

What role does fashion play in your life?
I have always enjoyed having my own sense of fashion. I’ve never had a ton of money to spend on clothes so I have become very good at mixing and matching! Being in the fashion industry with all things hair, I am always on the up and up with current hair and fashion trends. I like to represent as much as possible and inspire others.

What do you love about Fresh Collective?
FC really inspired me to bring out my inner “girly”. Wearing these dresses really brought something out in me. I’ve worked hard to get fit and the clothing at FC flattered me in a way I hadn’t really ever seen. I also love that FC carries local designer brands. Being a small business owner in the city, I love to support my fellow local artisans.

What do you have that you want to promote?
I would like to promote my business. The Joint Hair Salon. It’s an amalgamation of my old salon, The Third Floor Hair Boutique, and Pop Hair Design. We opened up in July and are going strong! Come by for all your hair and makeup needs!

Also my roller derby team CN Power and league Toronto Roller Derby. It takes up a lot of my time and has for years. I am passionate about the sport and am thankful to have been able to be part of it and it’s growth all of these years.

Dress: Frill Dress – Desserts and Skirts $165.00
Bracelet: Rock Candy – BurfurtArt (can be worn as a necklace with an extender piece) $45.00
Shoes: Lonna T-Bar in Rose – Hush Puppies $100.00

This dress is very girly compared to much of what Amanda wears, and it works fabulously as a contrast to her more “rock ‘n’ roll” looks. With the frills and the very sweet girly shape, plus the demure longer skirt, this is an eye-catching look for Amanda that’s fun, flirty and sexy in a very subtle way. The tailoring – the waist darts and band that are a bit retro and very shapely – on this dress is perfect for Amanda’s figure.

Is there anything else we should know about you?
I am originally from North Bay Ontario and love to go home as much as possible to visit my mom and breath the fresh northern air! I love being outdoors and am most happy if I’m near a beach.
I’ve played in bands most of my life and realized in the last 5 or more years that I love playing the drums! They are currently piled up in my living room as my busy lifestyle doesn’t allow any room for music at the moment but I am not finished with that part of my life yet!!
Also, I am travelling to the UK, for the first time ever with CN Power next week to participate in a tournament in London. I haven’t travelled a ton in my lifetime and this will be my first time overseas! Eeep!! Wish us luck!!

Fun at Foursquare Day

photo 1 (10)

I had a blast attending Foursquare Day on Tuesday night! The evening was full of fun, networking, laughter, delicious beverages, yummy food (thanks for the delish veggie wrap Lou Dawg’s!), goofy photo ops and great giveaways!

photo 3 (8)

The Beer Academy was buzzing with social media professionals and app nerds galore, and hosted (as you now know) by the lovely web mavens Nat & Marie, who we were proud to dress for the occasion.

photo 3 (7)
Nat wowed the crowd in this gorgeous dress by Desserts & Skirts!

photo 4 (5)
Marie totally rocked this great outfit featuring a bolero jacket from Kollontai, Tiger tee from Things Aren’t So Terrible and amazing trousers from Monikova!

photo 2 (9)
I chose to wear this pastel coloured number by Brenda Beddome which I topped with a leather jacket for a little rock and roll edge… as well as this hat and glasses… for a… cartoon Johnny Depp look? Okay okay… they were photo props, relax!

One of the night’s highlights was this fun make-your-own-gif station from SweetGif – I of course had to sneak in some FC promo – Do YOU follow us on Twitter yet? (do it… or else…)

photo (29)Other great perks: I got a yummy Pilsner from Creemore Springs and a brand new case for my iPhone thanks to iSkin!

Thanks to Karly from Foursquare Day, Nat & Marie for promoting FC so beautifully and all the other partners and attendees for a wonderful 4/16! See you next year!
