Playing Dress Up with Adaline

If you’ve been following us for awhile, you’re probably already familiar with our good friend Adaline. We LOVE this girl. She’s such a talent, such a darling and so cool. We love partnering with her whenever we can, we love playing her music in our stores, hell, we just love hanging out with her!

So without further ado… the lovely Adaline!

Talk about starting with a bang. Adaline achieves near Judy Garland levels of melodrama on “That’s What You Do Best”, the stately electro-torch song that opens her latest album, Modern Romantics. But she doesn’t get there without boxing your ears with wiggy sax (from Shuffle Demon Richard Underhill) and unhinged guitar solos (by Hawksley Workman) on the way. It’s what Adaline does best; elegant structures that happen to be wildly hooky. “It’s a pop record,” she says of her sophomore effort, “but certainly not straight down the middle. I have pop sensibilities, but I hope I come across as a little deeper than a pop tart.” Deeper by orders of magnitude, based on the sheer stylistic scope of Modern Romantics, and the quixotic path it takes through sexy, minatory trip hop (“Keep Me High”), smartly built robo-pop (“The Noise”, “Sparks”, “Stereo”), and even the sad-erotic cabaret of “Cost Is Too High (Not To Love)”. Recorded at Toronto’sCanterbury Studios, Adaline and her collaborators and co-producers Hawksley Workman, Marten Tromm, and Tino Zolfo have made the kind of record that’s invested with depth you only ever get from high-end, ultra-talented music nerds.

Since its release on Light Organ/Universal Records on November 1st, 2011 the album has received strong praise from music critics. Modern Romantics entered the “Earshot” Top 50 on Nov. 29th 2011 charting in the top 10 in many stations across Canada and her song “That’s What You Do Best” had an impressive 12 week stay in the Top 30 on the CBC Radio 3. The music video for the first single “The Noise” was premiered on Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine Online in January 2012. The video broke into the Top 20 on Much More Music and garnered over 100,000 Youtube views in its first week.

The television and movie world also took note of the album. Shortly after its release, the song “Say Goodbye (I Won’t Even)” was featured on the “Grey’s Anatomy” mid-season finale (Nov. 2011). A couple weeks later, Adaline’s song “Sparks” was again featured on “Grey’s Anatomy” with almost back-to-back episode placements. Other music features include “90210″, “Ringer”, “Royal Pains”, “Rookie Blue”, “Degrassi”, “The Listener”, “Bomb Girls”, “Lost Girl”, “Flashpoint” and the new Samuel L Jackson movie “The Samaritan”.

Since her debut release Famous For Fire (2008), Adaline has been interviewed on ETalk, MuchMusic, ET Canada and has toured across Canada sharing the stage with esteemed colleagues Blonde Redhead, Wild Nothing, Dan Mangan, Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother), Hannah Georgas, and The Sheepdogs. She has played numerous festivals including CMW, NXNE, Junofest, Sled Island and Breakout West.

Recently, the album also earned a nomination for “Pop Recording of the Year” at the Western Canadian Music Awards which took place this past September 2012 in Regina, SK.

In addition to preparing to record her third album, Adaline just collaborated with Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene for the score of the new Bret Easton Ellis film “The Canyons” starring Lindsay Lohan which will be released Summer 2013.

When did you start pursuing music as a passion? What sparked it?
I grew up singing and performing but didn’t really see songwriting as a passion or even a possibility. When I was in University I started dating a songwriter and thought I’d try it out for fun. It quickly became a passion and after school I decided to pursue it full time. It’s a scary direction to take but sometimes you have to push yourself off the ledge to understand what you’re capable of.
What is your favourite song you’ve written? What is it about? How did it come to be?
There is a song on my first record called “Meaningless Meeting” and it sticks out in my mind as one of my favourite songwriting moments because it was the first time I experienced an almost spiritual like encounter of a song just tumbling out of me effortlessly. It was one of the first times I felt like a songwriter and for that reason it always feels special.
What is your relationship to fashion? What does it mean to you?
My personal style has evolved over the years and it’s mostly been a journey of understanding what I love and feeling bold enough to try it. For years I was drawn to items of clothing but just felt too shy. Now I never let a piece of clothing scare me off – fashion is supposed to be diverse and fun – we should never let what other people think detour us from our own expression.
As a local artist, what do you love most about Toronto? What about Canada?
I’ve been in Toronto for 2 years and I continue to fall in love with the city. There are always new places and things to discover. It’s so multicultural and expressive. It’s also one of the only cities left in Canada that has multiple venues for artists to perform in. It’s not perfect in that respect, but at least artists have some options. Canada is a beautiful country that I have had the pleasure of exploring. We are very much still building our own identity, but I have felt encouraged by the artistic endeavours I’ve encountered over the past 5 years.
Is there a woman in your life that really moves and inspires you? Who is she and why?
My mother. She is the strongest person I have ever known. She is continually positive and genuinely interested in the well being of others both emotionally and spiritually. If I could have half her heart I would be lucky.

FC Ambassador Guest Blog: Getting Dainty at Fresh Collective

Last week we were happy to play host to a fabulous night of shopping and beauty with one of our FC Ambassadors – the lovely, Nicole Wilson aka Dainty Girl. She wrote a great blog post after the event. Check it out below, along with some great photos of all the fun!

Last Tuesday I co-hosted a night of fashion and beauty with my friends at Fresh Collective and a whole lotta stylish guests! It was so lovely to connect with my readers and blogger friends over drinks, nibbles, manicures, makeup and of course…SHOPPING! I’ve been a Fresh Collective Ambassador for about six months and it was amazing to finally host an event with them!

Dainty Girl @ Fresh Collective

Fresh Collective has three locations in Toronto, all supporting local designers – many of whom reside in Toronto and frequently visit the store to interact with shoppers and provide style advice. We hosted last week’s event at the Queen Street West location and invitedDaLish Cosmetics and Bio Seaweed Gel to join us. Guest enjoyed complimentary gel manicures, makeup consultations and discount shopping on apparel and accessories. There were giveaways too! One lucky guest won a Premium Wardrobe Makeover session with a Fresh Collective style expert ($200 value) and another lucky guest won their choice of Bionic dress by Toronto-based designer Mark Foreman.

I had a great time chatting and taking photos with guests all evening – it was lovely to meet some of my readers and introduce them to other fabulous bloggers too! It’s always exciting to meet the people behind the blogs and Twitter handles, so it made me smile to bring some of my favourite people together!

Most importantly, everyone loved the fresh local fashion at Fresh Collective; playing dress up in the change rooms with the fabulous staff and taking unique pieces home at great prices. I went home with a pretty floral blouse by Monikova and a Very Berry manicure from Bio Seaweed Gel (which is still going strong). It brings me so much joy to shine light on the incredible fashion talent in Canada and Fresh Collective founder Laura-Jean Bernhardson is a true champion for all things local with her equally passionate and wonderful staff!

Fresh Collective on the Red Carpet: Safe Haven Premiere

posterLast night I had the pleasure of attending the advanced premiere screening of Safe Haven, a new film from Nicholas Sparks – author of The Notebook and Dear John.

dainty allisonI hit the red carpet with my friend (and FC Ambassador) Dainty Girl, wearing the super stylish Dania Beads Tunic from Desserts and Skirts (as voted by you!), which I paired with a pair of black liquid leggings and blank ankle boots for a bit of rock and roll edge.

The film’s stars Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough were in attendance and looked just as stylish and stunning in person as they did on the big screen.

Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough light up the red carpet.

Julianne looks stunning in a Zimmerman dress.

Josh looked pretty alright too... I guess.

Josh looked pretty alright too… I guess.

Going from the trailer alone (having not read the book), I expected Safe Haven to be a sappy love-fest filled with longing gazes, sweeping music and over-the-top melodrama (and for that I was excited… chick flicks are my kryptonite!), but was surprised at the heavy subject matter and gasp-inducing plot twists. Of course there were times where I struggled not to roll my eyes at the this-would-never-happen-in-real-life moments and the sheer perfection of Josh Duhamel’s bone structure – but I was legitimately impressed with the movie overall, and I’ll admit, I shed a tear or two during some particularly moving scenes.

Safe Haven opens in theatres February 14th, 2013.

What to Wear Wednesday – Sweet Tooth!

What to Wear Wednesday - Sweet Tooth!

I was feeling a sweet tooth today. My mind drifted to the decadent delicious doughnuts created by our FC Ambassador Ashley Jacot De Boinod, owner of Glory Hole Doughnuts – a gourmet doughnut shop that opened its doors in Parkdale this summer to rave reviews!

I put together this simple and cozy fall outfit with that in mind. Black skinny Yoga Jeans are slim, classic and smart (with a great amount of stretch) and this bamboo jersey cowl teck top in a rich eggplant colour (compliments of Studio Fresh) floats gently over your curves (leaving just enough room if you can’t resist a second sweet)!

Frost your outfit with some sparkly gems from Sugar Rush (see what I did there?) and slide into some slouchy Miz Mooz boots to complete the look!

Now who’s hungry?

Become a FC Ambassador!

Fresh Collective is here because of all the wonderful people who join us on our journey – designers, staff, fans and customers. It’s important to us to be part of the community, spreading joy and beauty through what we do in many ways.
We’re looking for a few good women to help spread the word about what’s fabulous at Fresh Collective. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to join the inner circle at Fresh Collective. You’ll get first glimpse at our clothing each season, get products to review, and you’ll be treated like a Fresh Collective VIP with photo shoots, product samples, invites to special events (ours and other people’s too!).

In return, we ask that you share the good word about what you have experienced through our FC Ambassador program. Rant and/or rave about the product we’ve provided you, share the experiences you’ve had with us on your social media channels (and ours) and help us spread the good word. Phew, being a social butterfly is hard work!

If you’re interested in being a 2013 FC Ambassador, click here and tell us why!
Also, meet our current FC Ambassadors here.

I Rush, You Rush, we all scream for Sugar Rush! – FC Ambassador Guest Blog – Liz Parker

As a Fresh Collective Ambassador, I was thrilled when I was invited to the Roncey store to select some Sugar Rush jewellery to add to my already absurd collection of baubles.  Sugar Rush is designed by Jessie Tucker-Lyzwa, a stand-out chick with purple hair, though in this pic it’s PINK!

When I arrived at the Roncey store, I was spinny with delight when I saw the Sugar Rush display:

Jewellery is the icing on the cake.  Once you’ve figured out the perfect outfit, jewellery is what puts a stamp on your style.  What I enjoy about an event where black dresses are aplenty is observing how people accessorize … and make each outfit their own.

Sugar Rush’s jewellery has a sense of movement… to me, it looks like the pieces were caught in the breeze.  Outdoor elements are included, like the shapes of leaves and feathers.

I was very drawn to the purple, as it’s one of my favourite colours – look at this beauty, with the funky earrings:

But they look so much better on the wonderful Veronica Doval Slater, a fellow FC Ambassador

And I’m delighted, as she was quietly coveting them.

I also ogled Sugar Rush in beautiful red …

…. and they brought out the ham in me:
And THEN … I spotted this gorgeous GREEN combo.  I love green as much as I love purple, and it was the whimsical feather motif that grabbed me:

And here it is on yours truly:

I love how jewellry makes you feel.  Polished, elegant, funky … whatever the look you’re going for, the perfect set of earrings, necklace, ring, or bracelet truly is the “Jewel in the Crown”.

I also attend a party in late September at the Roncesvalles location, celebrating Fresh Collective being powered by Bullfrog Power.  This company is a 100% green energy provider, which helps their clients set up clean, renewable energy solutions.  We Ambassadors received a lovely info kit about Bullfrog, and I included in this pic with my beautiful green Sugar Rush jewellery acquisition:

Thank you to Fresh Collective and Bullfrog for the GOOD TIMES! Green jewellery and green frogs – all good!
