Fresh Collective with the girlfriends – FC Ambassador Guest Blog – Veronica Slater

Another fabulous FC Ambassador Guest Blog from the wonderful Veronica Slater! Check her out online here: http://veronicaslaterpresents.blogspot.ca/

Girlfriends.  What would I do without them?  About a week ago we planned a dream day together hoping none of the kids would get sick – they’re notorious for timing.  Anyhow, the Girlfriend’s Gods were with us and yesterday, we executed our plan… boy was it ever fun! First we exercised together (see proof!), then we had lunch, and just before heading to Fresh Collective on Roncesvalles for an afternoon of fun and shopping, we snapped a picture for you.  Meet my girlfriends: Christine and Lori.  I love them to death.
Here’s where the real fun began.  I took them shopping to Fresh Collective – my very first trip with friends as aFC ambassador.  Can you see me glowing?  ‘Cause I am!!!  Let’s have a look at the ‘before’ girlfriend picture.
On our shopping list (cause you always need a list!) we had identified a few basic fall ‘wants’ and a couple of ‘needs’. We also went over what works and doesn’t work so well with their body types and their best colours.  All important things to keep in mind while shopping.

Here’s Christine with a dress by Nude.  We loved the colour and fit on her.  The dress was easily accessorised with a gorgeous flower by Jennifer Morris from Blackjam and a black leather belt.  The Burgundy boots by Miz Mooz looked divine.
Here’s the same fabric in a different style, this dress is by Brenda Beddome.  Also flattering and comfortable.
Here’s Christine wearing our two favourite pieces and the ones she thought she would be wearing most: A dress by Bionic and a dress by Melow.  We all loved both of these looks on her!  They really are perfect pieces for a busy Mom of three, easily paired with leggings and flats, awesome with tights and Miz Mooz boots, chic with flashy accessories and heels. I guess this is what us Busy Bees with capital Bs look for: versatile stylish clothes that feel and look good – and can take consecutive washes too!  Gotta love real clothes for real women!  Christine also purchased beautiful casual grey boots by Miz Mooz to run around in style.

——————————————————————————————————–

Now here’s Lori with our favourite picks.  A Brenda Beddome top beautifully adorned by a silk flower by Jennifer Morris – Blackjam with the best footless leggings in the world by Spanx and those sexy burgundy ankle boots by Miz Mooz.  I love this look.  As you can see behind her, the dress comes in different colours.  I think she’ll be getting a lot of use out of this piece.

Here are the same leggings and shoes with a different top by Brenda Beddome – clearly made for Lori.  It’s easy to see how this outfit will be taking her from the office, to an afternoon meeting, to a hot date with the hubby, to having a drink with friends – like I’m not going to include myself in such plans!!!  Doesn’t she look great?
We left the store with big smiles on our faces thinking of what a great day we had had and how important it is to make time to reconnect, catch-up and look after ourselves.  Busy Bees are not very good at that but we’re working on it!  As for the shopping, no matter what one ends-up buying, it’s the overall experience that remains with us and ultimately what keeps us coming back.  Joe and Roslyn, as always, you were fantastic at offering the best Fresh Collective experience!  I knew you would be -only the best for my girls.

What’s on YOUR list of ‘needs’ and ‘wants’ this season? Remember that the following clothes are available at Fresh Collective AND at the their new ONLINE SHOP, go have a peek!

Introducing… Veronica Slater – 2012 FC Ambassador

veronicaslaterpresents.blogspot.ca :: @Veronica_VSp :: Veronica on Facebook

Life has taken me from my native Buenos Aires, to Montréal in la belle Province, to the wonderful place I now call home: The Roncesvalles Village, Toronto. Diversity is my language expressed variously in English, French and Spanish – sometimes consecutively, often in a curious and crazy ménange à trois. My three cultures shape and colour my life, so any given day will start with a cup of mate cocido, followed by a mid-morning café au lait, I’ll tape a radio broadcast en français, write a blog post in English, help my youngest daughter with her dictée, then have dinner à deux with my English-speaking husband. And it’s nada for me. Simply ‘Normal’, ironically being one of those words that remain identical in my three languages.
After spending a thoroughly fulfilling 10 years as an elementary French Immersion teacher while juggling the demands of three young children (now we have 4), I decided to follow my passion for finding ways to live and consume better. It was so much fun, I started writing a blog sharing my crazy – yet practical Latina way of coping with family life, finding joy in every day and some tips and tricks on everything from celebrating special occasions to tracking the latest trends and products to my vintage purse collection, and just about everything in between- including style. Before I knew it, I became a lifestyle contributor to the CBC radio show ‘Boréal Express’ and a regular contributor to the show ‘RelieF’ airing on TFO. To date, each of my professional appearances have had one thing in common: every single outfit I wore has not only been designed but made locally and available at Fresh Collective – and I’ve told the world! This makes me very proud, ‘living better’ is often synonym of supporting local talent and…Did I mention how good they make me look? Well, they do!

I think it’s fair to say the experience at FC has enriched my sense of style and my life in general by gaining many new dear friends among staff and designers. I have concluded that the absolute best part of wearing local fashion is the story behind each piece, and how I feel connected to it. Suddenly, I’m not just wearing a beautiful dress by The Blushing Maple, I’m wearing the product of hours of careful hand-picked knits and fabrics not so interesting on their own but gorgeous when sustainable fashion and designer Marnie Kramer brings them together. I also value the general experience I am left with when I leave any of the three stores, in particular the one closest to my heart, the Roncy location. I’ve never met a woman in my community that feels differently, a sure sign FC is quickly becoming a staple in our hood!

You’ve probably guessed by now that I am absolutely thrilled to be able to continue promoting FC, The Blushing Maple, and the many other designers part of this wonderful circle by continuing to wear, blog and brag (why, yes that too!) during the next few months as a Fresh Collective Ambassador.

Favourite Toronto Hang Out:
Anywhere along Roncesvalles Avenue

Torontonian You Admire:
I absolutely adore Frank Gehry, I dream of seeing the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (Basque Country and home to my ancestors) in Spain, and the dancing house in Prague is also on my bucket list.

Favourite Local Music:
What’s playing at The Local or Gate 403 this week?

Best Coffee in the City:
When I want to treat myself to a good coffee I go to LIT but my number one drink is Mate (pronounced maté), nothing beats the taste of home.

Anything else you’d like to share?:
Styling a daily outfit is something I love doing. It helps me think about the day ahead, visualize what I want to accomplish and feel good. I like knowing that no matter how preoccupied I might be, it’s not the first thing people see. Whether I’m looking for comfort, warmth on a cold day or the practicality needed to play with my kids at the park, I know how to create the perfect combo for myself – or anyone needing help!

FASHION FALL 2012 – FC Ambassador Guest Blog – Adaline

Here’s another FC Ambassador Guest Blog by the gorgeous and talented ADALINE. Check out her site and listen to her music at www.adalinemusic.com

I have been known to wear a sparkly dress or two.  In fact, I get teased about it often…strangely enough, mostly by my male friends.  ”So, see you Saturday night?  Are you going to be wearing one of those ridiculous sparkly things?”  My theory is that they are secretly jealous since the truth is the “craziest” thing they have ever worn is a pink tie.  I actually have photographic proof of the male envy of my wardrobe here…

…I should note that at least 3 of my male friends also wore this dress on the same evening. I think I’ve made my point.

So, when Fresh Collective asked me to be an FC Ambassador, I was very excited to indulge in my un-sequinned side.  Fresh Collective is a boutique company that showcases clothing and jewelry by local Toronto designers.  Often the fabrics are organic or even reclaimed making them one of a kind.  I was lucky enough to go to the store a few weeks ago and meet a lot of the designers.  It was such an amazing experience to try on a piece of clothing with the designer standing beside you.  Fresh Collective asked me to come in today and try on some of their fall pieces and give you a little preview of some of my favourite looks.  Below are some of my picks and the names of the designers

First, I love this cozy vest from Paper People Clothing. The vest is made of reclaimed fabrics!

This mustard dress which is one of my favourite fall colour choices is by Bionic (Mark Foreman).  I often find I gravitate towards his designs.  He makes sassy, casual dresses that seem to cling in all the right places, if you know what I mean…Thanks Mark!

Wrap dress is also a Bionic design.

The designer who I would say stole the show for me today was Brenda Beddome.  I hadn’t tried on any of her clothing until today but I fell for this scoop neck “tunic”, that of course is a dress on me (5’3, sheesh). I’m hoping I’ll get to wear it at some point during the West Coast Music Awards in Regina in a couple of weeks. Please also note my hand on waist model pose. I practiced that especially for you.

Here is another Brenda Beddome dress and a necklace by Tank!

Finally, accesories.  Fresh Collective has some very cute pieces of jewelry – I could have done an entire post on accessories.  Here are a few select pieces.

Matchy-matchy isn’t always cool but here I think it works. I adore Curious Oddities (Kat Shura) designs. Simple, tasteful pieces that have vintage flare.

This awesome cuff and necklace are by Odd Bird (Tara Campbell).

And finally…I promised I wouldn’t spend money but got a major crush on these Hush Puppies that have a bit of a Fluevog-esque look.  I didn’t even flirt with them.  I just took them home.

Thanks for joining me on my fall fashion extravaganza!  And thanks to Fresh Collective for once again letting me come in and destroy your dressing room.  If you like any of these pieces and want to support these Toronto designers, swing by Fresh Collective – they have three locations – 692 Queen Street West, 274 Augusta, and 401 Roncesvalles

…and how cute that they put pictures of the designers on their walls?  Cute!

INTRODUCING… MELANIE CRUICKSHANK – 2012 FC AMBASSADOR

www.dalishcosmetics.com :: @DaLishCosmetics :: DaLish Cosmetics on Facebook

I’m Melanie Cruickshank, and since I can remember, I have been a die-hard beauty addict.

My love affair with makeup began when I was four years old. I used to play with my Mother’s makeup and I realized then the power that makeup has; the ritual of opening the packages, the freedom to create any face you want, and the fun of playing with your features to bring your best face to life. I spent the rest of my life from that point learning everything I can about makeup. I had stacks of Fashion magazines in my bedroom. I had bins of makeup products. I tried it all. I wanted to perfect what every woman wants; that hyper-natural flawless look. After years of trying everything in the market, I noticed that although I had my weekday look down to a science, it still took up to 20 minutes to create (and there were more than a few mornings where that wasn’t an option. I needed a way to recreate the “flawless natural” look I had worked so diligently on in 5 minutes or less.

Nature gave me 5 tools on each hand. I wanted to use just my fingers or sometimes a Q-tip to create my look. Not willing to believe that my trusted friend cosmetics had turned their back on me, I began to research how makeup is made. I threw myself into researching every ingredient in my favourite products. I made lists. I researched things I couldn’t pronounce. I decided if the ideal products wouldn’t come to me, would make them. My kitchen soon became a mad scientists lab of foundations and eye shadows. Instead of leftovers, I had trays of lip balm stored in my fridge. After a hard day’s work, I had liquid eyeliner under my fingernails. I tested the makeup ceaselessly. I got my prep time in the morning down to 5 minutes, and my after work day-to-night transformation down to about the same. What’s more is women started asking me about the funny tubes I was always carrying with me. I expanded my test to my girlfriends and colleagues. They all noticed how universal the colours were. They magically looked beautiful on whoever tried them. DaLish became a reality.

A few months later, the testing was complete: the product “just worked” and was a hit with a small circle of girls I shared it with. I decided to take DaLish to the next level. I hope you enjoy my products. I made them with real women in mind.

Favourite Toronto Hang Out:
Depends on my day – 416 Snack Bar, Grand Electric and Foggy Dew patio are staples for me.

Torontonian You Admire:
so many to choose from… I’m huge fans of Corrine Anestopoulos of Biko (jewellery designer), Jessica Jensen (hand bags designer), Philip Sparks (fashion Designer) They have inspired me along the way and always blown away by how talented they are and business savvy.

Favourite Local Music:
we have so many! Bedouin Soundclash, Billy Talent, Metric, Lights – Lots of amazing talent in this city.

Best Coffee in the City:
Balzac’s! I get a fix from my favourite place Clafouti.

Anything else you’d like to share?:
I like to play Ping Pong, eat rainbow sherbet and dance to old school hip hop after a few cocktails!

Beautiful Burgundy For Fall – FC Ambassador Guest Blog

Here’s another FC Ambassador Guest Blog by the lovely Nicole Wilson of DaintyGirl.ca

There’s always at least one trend each season that I fall head over heels for! In Spring/Summer 2012, it was the peplum that emptied my bank account and rocked my wardrobe. I also splurged on some embellished collars which took the accessories world by storm and they’re still going strong!

The Fall/Winter 2012 trend that has me in a fashion frenzy is hands down, the hottest colour of the season – BURGUNDY!

I absolutely adore this this colour and all variations of it: maroon, wine, berry, eggplant… OH AUBERGINE! It’s flattering to every skin tone, but I especially love the way it complements my fair skin and brings out the red in my hair!
This warm autumn colour first stole my heart on the fashion week runways, in light and dark variations and all kinds of textures: silk chiffon, tulle, lace, leather and even fur (faux for us, of course)! Swoon!

There’s no way I can afford couture (yet), but my wallet won’t be safe from this trend for long…burgundy is showing up EVERYWHERE! All of my favourite retailers are stocked up on burgundy for fall/winter, including Fresh Collective!

Fresh Collective Loves Burgundy

I recently purchased the Mandala Designs Serena Zig Zag Dress (far left); I love the burgundy paired with black and grey and the Missoni-like style!
All it takes is one trip to the mall and you’ll find burgundy jeans, dresses, blouses, handbags, shoes and more! Talk about temptation!

I love my burgundy skinny jeans this season and I have my eye on a pair of burgundy ankle booties too!

This stunning colour is compatible with a variety of other colours too – try it with gold, heather grey or cream for a neutral look or go bold and colour block with blue, purple or orange combinations! This trend also pairs well with some other fall trends:
Black & White is hot for fall/winter and burgundy is the ultimate complimentary colour for a classic and elegant look.
Geometric Prints stand out against this rich solid colour and give way to an exciting range of possibilities for edgy accessories too!
Animal Print in classic black and white Dalmatian or black and tan Leopard look great with burgundy, but you’ll also find sexy animal print jeans in burgundy – I recently saw a python print on a pair of burgundy skinnies and I’ve been dreaming about them ever since!
Leather is hot this season but full-on leather may not be for everyone. Never fear – there are some incredible leather accent pieces in-stores and stay on the look-out for coated/waxed denim. It’s comfortable and gives your basic skinny jeans a sexy leather look! I’ve seen them in burgundy and a variety of other jewel tones this season.
Go out and get some bargain burgundy for fall and splurge on a couple versatile and statement making burgundy accessories, like heels, handbags and jewellery.

The burgundy trend extends to beauty too! My must-have fall makeup includes a rich burgundy lip stick and lip gloss. These vampy deep red lips look amazing with clean, pale skin and minimal eye makeup for day or smoky brown/copper eye makeup for night. Picture these two runway looks combined…RAWR!

Some of my recent burgundy beauty buys include NARS Larger Than Life Lip Gloss in Rouge Tribal, MAC Crème Lipstick in Media and the Urban Decay Naked Palette to achieve that smoky brown eye.

Don’t delay ladies, get out there and shop the burgundy trend…it’s not going away anytime soon and items purchased for fall will transition beautifully to winter! Start your burgundy shopping spree at Fresh Collective at Queen West, Roncesvalles or Kensington Market!

Happy Shopping!
Nicole

FC AMBASSADOR GUEST BLOG : LIZ PARKER

Every year, I practise an annual tradition that I hold dear to my heart. Around the end of August or the start of September – a month I call “Fashion New Year” – I take an afternoon off, go buy the huge, bulky, September issue of Vogue. I while away the fading summer sun, reading it from cover to cover, sipping on a fancy coffee, noting the trends, past, current, and future. This year, I decided to do something different, and invite a friend to join me. She understood the sanctity of this annual ritual and was honoured.

We were to meet up the day after the Fresh Collective Ambassador meet and greet on August 29/12, where I had fun posing for this shot, wearing a Nude Clothes dress and Susana Erazo belt:

On August 30, the plan was I get my roots done, we buy our Vogue magazines, and park ourselves on a patio for the afternoon. That was not to be. On Thursday, August 30, I was struck by a car that ran a red light as I crossed the street. It’s funny how the mind works when you go into shock. Part of me was all there: instructing the driver to pull over; securing a witness to email me what he saw; taking a photo of my injury; being glad I shaved my legs since the paramedics were examing them. The other part of me was explaining to the paramedics how I couldn’t POSSIBLY go to emergency – I was on my way to get my roots done! (I cancelled my hair appointment and went to emergency.)

So I was going to write about how exciting it was to anticipate fall fashion, but now I’m thinking about its therapeutic nature instead. As my friend sat with me at emergency, I kept telling her, “we are still buying our Vogues, you know,” and she said “of course!” Believe it or not, after being released from hospital (nothing broken – but today as I write this, I still feel the affects of being hit), and despite gentle protests from my loyal friend, I marched her (she marched; I limped) to a magazine stand and we got our Vogues, and sat in a Queen West bar looking at them over cocktails as the light faded.

It was days before I bothered with lipstick and accessorizing (when I ignore both you KNOW I ain’t well) but I thought how about how much fun I had at the Ambassador meet and greet, and ho much I love my acquisitions. Below is the same dress and belt as above, but this time with a Fresh Baked Goods jacket with gold clasp, from Fresh Collective. The shoes are Bobbi Blu:

I thought about how much I can’t wait to wear this sharp ensemble to Toronto’s Fashion Night Out, which is happening in a few hours as I write this. Below is a Mandala Design tie-top and Brenda Beddome stretch jeans, from Fresh Collective. The other items include a hat by The Hatter; JJ Winters bag, and shoes by Aldo:

To be excited about clothes again is a good sign of my recovery. My life did not flash before my eyes and I didn’t gain any significant insight re: the universe. The gift I received from this is I check the streets obsessively before I cross.

I am happy to say that Fresh Collective has been a part of my healing process, and the staff has been wonderful asking how I’m doing.

Have a Happy Fashion New Year. Celebrate life!

INTRODUCING… LAUREN O’NEIL – 2012 FC AMBASSADOR

www.laurenoutloud.com :: @laurenonizzle :: Lauren on Facebook
Lauren O’Neil is a writer, video blogger, TV personality, news producer, aspiring comedian, web culture scholar and generalized Internet junkie with a penchant for fake words and all things lulzy. Follow her adventures through Twitter @laurenonizzle

Favourite Toronto Hang Out:
Trinity Bellwoods when it’s nice outside, or the Thompson Hotel’s rooftop. The Drake Sky Yard. Fresh. Any patio within walking distance of my place, pretty much. I spend a lot of time at Starbucks, too, and shopping along Queen West 🙂

Torontonian You Admire:
Harold Innis and Marshall McLuhan would be the Torontonians I admire most, but since they’re both dead let’s say… Jeanne Beker. She’s one of the most influential women in the fashion industry WORLDWIDE and she got her start right here in Toronto. Plus, she had a farm.

Favourite Local Music:
Austra, BADBADNOTGOOD, the Weeknd, my friends in Nixon, Buck65 (he’s incredible), The Elwins, Azari & III — Do Drake or Deadmau5 count anymore? I really like them both.

Best Coffee in the City:
I like the coffee at McDonald’s. Don’t judge. It’s cheap and awesome and they never give me ‘tude or take 20 minutes to serve me an Americano. You know what I’m saying.

Anything else you’d like to share?:
Yes. My Instagram feed! It’s filled with many wonders (and cat photos. Like this one.)
