Best of Style Profile – Week 2!

On Fridays we publish Style Profile- a popular blog where we feature local women in outfits from our store. This time of year, it’s time to revisit some of our favourite posts!

First up this week we have  Ana Bailão, the city councillor from Ward 18.  Ana has had a busy year, having been appointed our city’s Housing Advocate and working on a joint venture with Covenant House to provide housing for sex trafficked victims among her other varied duties.

We’re pleased that Ana was able to take time out of her schedule last fall to show her support for small business and the independent fashion community by modeling some outfits for us.

Hey Fresh Collective, I was just in Vancouver and Calgary on a book tour, and guess what was in my luggage? All my precious pieces from Fresh Collective designers, of course! They were perfect for my book readings, and I got many compliments. Thanks again for dressing me in style.

Awww… Carrianne!  We love you!  We can’t wait to see what your 2015 looks like and keep you in style for all your adventures!

What’s a typical day like for you? If I can get my kid and myself out the door in time, both of us clean, dressed, fed and with lunch in hand by 8:45 AM, then the hardest part of the day is over.

What in your life is really important to you? Family. Friends. Social justice. Inspiration. Books.

What would you like to be remembered for? Generosity.

What role does fashion play in your life? I have always loved fashion. I grew up in the 80s with the likes of Cyndi Lauper as a style influence, so I appreciate a particular whimsy in clothes. I was also a Goth for 5 minutes in the 90s and will always have a love for the melancholic fashion statement. In other words, I have range.

Dress: Lexi Sweater Dress – Studio Fresh $189
Necklace: Curious Oddities – $48
Shoes: Lonna Mary Jane – Hush Puppies $100

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?  Where do I start? I am sure that at least half of my wardrobe comes from Fresh Collective designers. Being a 40 something woman who must juggle multiple roles – I work with OCAD U cool kids, I co-own an organic grocery store, I have a 7-year old kid. I’m a writer and do readings – the pieces that I get from Fresh are able to transfer into all these scenes.  I love the colour, the prints, the amazing cuts and shapes of the clothes and how well they are made.  They are also classic in an unconventional sense – they outlast the other 5-minute trends in fashion and still come off as very current years after purchase. I also love that they are made and designed in Canada.

Top: Erika Comfort Jersey Tee – Mandala Design $78
Dress: Stella Panel Jumper – Mandala Desgn $168
Bracelet: Ch-ch-ch- chains – BurfurtART $45
Shoes: Lonna Mary Jane – Hush Puppies $100

What do you have that you want to promote?  I launched my novel The Wondrous Woo last fall, and it’s been a wonderful year, culminating to being shortlisted for the Toronto Book Awards. A second novel is in the works! Also, please shop at Multiple Organics, the specialty grocery store that I co-own with Nupur Gogia. We are “fresh”, too!

Is there anything else we should know about you? My superhero power is that I can sleep – anytime, anywhere.

Where can people find you on social media? I am on twitter and facebook!

Fresh Collective Style Profile – Laura Spink

I became a fan of Laura’s band The Young Novelists after seeing them share the stage with the band my husband plays in (Ron Hawkins and the Do Good Assassins).   Their music is great (check it out!) and following their activity on Facebook I could see they were travelling a lot and playing lots of gigs all over the place.  What I didn’t know until I got to know her better was that Laura also is a mom and has a full time career as a scientist!  Let’s learn a little more about this fabulous busy, inspiring and accomplished lady!  – Laura-Jean, CEO and Founder of Fresh Collective

Name: Laura Spink
Occupation: Vocalist and percussionist in Toronto-based folk-rock band The Young Novelists and hydrogeologist with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change
Age: A good age.
Lifestyle: So busy! But in a good way! I dress pretty casually during the day, but when I perform I dress up.

PSX_20141020_184102

Top: Erika – Mandala Design $78
Skirt: Jupiter – Annie 50 $145
Shoes – Lonna Mary Jane – Hush Puppies $100

What’s a typical day like for you?

I’m so not a morning person, so on a typical weekday when I’m not playing a gig, I force myself out of bed, have a quick shower, throw on something work appropriate, kiss my husband and son goodbye and dash out the door to catch the bus to my day job downtown. After work I come home and spend time with my son until his bedtime around eight. Then depending on the night, I’ll either have rehearsal, hunker down in front of the computer and do administrative band things (endless emails, social media stuff, graphic design), or go out to see live music and catch up with friends. There is so much live music going on on any given night in Toronto; it’s really quite amazing!

PSX_20141020_184126

Jacket: Monilifera Blazer – Jennifer Fukushima $379
Top: Yasmine Louis $55
Jeans: Yoga Jean (High Rise Skinny) $120
Boots: Laura’s own

What in your life is really important to you?

Spending time with my four year old son Simon is the most precious thing. He is the most amazing person I know. But it’s also important to my husband and I that Simon sees his parents do what they love doing, which means that sometimes we’re away from home playing music (and our he gets to hang out with his grandparents). It’s a balance and we’re always reassessing how to make it work so we’re all happy.

What role does fashion play in your life?

Honestly, I feel somewhat overwhelmed by fashion a lot of the time. I know what I like on other people, but I feel totally overwhelmed when I go shopping for clothes. I’m a lot more confident when it comes to the dresses I perform in though. When I was in grade nine, my grandmother let my sister and I raid her closet, since then I’ve always loved that 50s and 60s vibe. When I play I generally wear one of my grandmother’s dresses or a vintage inspired dress from one of the independent clothing shops around town. Dressing up helps put me in a different headspace.

PSX_20141020_184035

Dress: Jayne Retro Shirt Dress – Mandala Design $138
Shoes: Adah ankle boots – Miz Mooz $210 (now on sale for $168)

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

The folks who work there are so great at helping style challenged people like me put together an outfit. Plus the clothes they carry are mostly independent Canadian designers, which I love.

What do you have that you want to promote?

The Young Novelists are playing a residency at the Cameron House (408 Queen St West) from 8-10pm every Monday in November (3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th). We’re also putting the finishing touches on our new album, which will be release in the Spring, and we’re planning a big old party to celebrate!

Is there anything else we should know about you?

I was a pretty good triple jumper and 200 metre sprinter back in high-school.

Where can people find you on social media?

Fresh Collective Style Profile – Pip Bradford

Pip Bradford has been a superfan of Fresh Collective for a few years now, and we adore her.  We adore her so much, in fact, that we used a picture of her for a document we created to describe our target market to educate new designers who join us what kind of woman shops at Fresh Collective!  When she was at our Kensington location for her Style Profile shoot, she took over the store and sold things to other customers as I just watched!  She’s fun, funny and totally awesome.

~Laura-Jean, CEO and founder of Fresh Collective

Name: Pip Bradford
Occupation: Theatre Production
Age: 31
Lifestyle: I go where the sea takes me.

1413762080416

Dress: Dania Tunic – Desserts and Skirts $125
Necklace: Curious Oddities $26
Boots: Erika Lonna Boot – Hush Puppies $150
Tights: Pip’s own
Style Coach notes:  Pip chose and styled her own outfits for this shoot, and then bought most of what she chose, so I just stood back and watched. ;) She chose this tunic because of its versatility (dress or top; wear it long or pull it shorter and blouse it out a bit) and comfort. It is a best seller because it just works for most women and feels amazingly soft. ~ Laura-Jean

What’s a typical day like for you?
There is no such thing.
What in your life is really important to you?
My career, my friends, and my library. Seriously I really love my library.

1413762261630

Dress: Mona Dress – Studio Fresh $189
Boots: Ninette – Miz Mooz $239
Style Coach notes: When Pip showed up I showed her this dress, and said, “This one has Pip written all over it!” I must have been right, as she bought it after the shoot! This dress has a great combination of fit and looseness. The band under the bust gives shape, but the skirt falls away and then balloons a bit at the bottom with some tucks. This is one of my personal faves of the season. ~ Laura-Jean

What would you like to be remembered for?
Rocking out as hard as I can, whenever I can.

What role does fashion play in your life?
I live a really full life, and I need my clothes to do everything I do, whether it be hanging lights at the top of a ladder, running a production meeting like a boss, reading comics in the corner of my favourite shop, or having drinks with my friends at my local.

1413762360738

Dress: April Pinch Dress – Studio Fresh $210
Shoes: Lonna Mary Jane – Hush Puppies $100
Style Coach notes: Pip has a big bold personality so a dress this dramatic is easy for her to pull off. This dress has it all – and it’s a top seller because of it. A stretchy panel across the back allows it to fit snug but comfortable, and the gathers and tucks show off your shape while not showing every detail. The asymmetrical details are a statement but nothing is too over the top in this dress. This is a great event dress. ~ Laura-Jean

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?
Every time I go to Fresh Collective, shopping feels like an awesome, fun, group event. Not only the staff, but all the other customers, make buying clothes there feel like a real community activity, which is tons of fun!

1413762428899

Dress: Jersey dress – Atelier B $128
Necklace: The Simples Cluster – burfurtART $38
Shoes: Lonna Mary Jane – Hush Puppy $100
Style Coach notes: This dress works well for most women because the waitband gives a great shape, and the pleats and pockets just fall in the right place. As with so many of our pieces, it’s soft and stretchy for maximum wearability. This dress is also a great “blank canvas” piece- it can range from casual to dressy depending on the accessories. ~Laura-Jean

Fresh Collective Style Profile – Ana Bailão

Name: Ana Bailão

Occupation: City Councillor, Ward 18

Age: A woman never tells ;)

Lifestyle: On-the-go.

ana-bailao-sp

Style Coach Notes: Ana liked this dress so much, after our photo shoot she bought one in the same style but a different colourway. This style just works on most women. The band creates a nice long line from under the bust to the hem and the cut of the skirt just flows away from the body skimming over tummies and hips. The demure tie and collar give it professional polish but the fabric shows off your shape. Very flattering! (Dress: Jayne Zig crimp shirt dress – Mandala Design $138, Shoes: Lonna Mary Jane – Hush Puppies $100, Bracelet: Ch-ch-chains – BurfurtART $45)

What’s a typical day like for you? It starts with a shot of espresso to kick off early morning meetings with stakeholders at City Hall. Followed by council and committee meetings, taking my day into the early evening. It doesn’t end there; even without any afternoon siestas! Usually, there are community meetings schedule weeks in advance for topics such as planning applications, parking upgrades and new community projects. Weekends are just as action packed, with numerous community festivals and events, allowing me the opportunity to better connect with the residents of the area; always making a day of work much more enjoyable. Fresh Collective Style Profile – Peggy Nash

I love Peggy Nash!  I’m very interested in women in leadership roles, and the first time I met Peggy in our shop, I was so impressed with how lovely she is in person and her commitment to shopping local and supporting local businesses. She is stylish, elegant and always looks comfortable and relatable.  She’s been a regular customer of ours for years and I’m proud that we outfit one of our leaders.

This blouse is lined with a soft and stretchy fabric for maximum comfort and coverage, but the silk overlayer is light as air for a gorgeous, super feminine look. What’s a typical day like for you? Up by 6am, read the news, go for a run, quickly get ready and then usually in first meeting at 8am. In Ottawa there is a core schedule of committee meetings, House Duty, Question Period, then other events and meetings are slotted in between.  In Toronto, I try to get to as many community meetings, events and activities possible, while also meeting with constituents at my office.  Every day is different. I commute between the two cities every week when the House is sitting. Continue reading

Angela Saini – Style Profile

Angela has been in my life for some time now, but we had never officially met!  She worked with my husband Steve at the Drake back when he was working there, and she did some work with Fresh Collective a couple times when we dressed her for shows and a video.  At the shoot was the first day I had had the pleasure of meeting in person, and wow, what a pleasure!  Angela is lovely, creative, a good business person and fun to work with!  I loved hearing about her music career and how she goes about it, and was very inspired about all the things she takes on to be successful!  – Laura-Jean Bernhardson, CEO and founder of Fresh Collective

Dress: Orphee – Annie 50 $219; Bracelet: Myka $159; Shoes: Edye Lonna Heel – Hush Puppies $100

Style Coach notes: Angela and I both loved the gold tones of this dress with her hair and skin tone, and the lush brocade fabric would be a great dress to perform or be photographed in, but work equally well for a nice dinner date.  -Laura-Jean

What’s a typical day like for you?

I don’t have a typical day in many ways! Some days start with writing, some with the many administrative tasks I do on my computer, and sometimes I wake up in another city. Every day always involves coffee! Sometimes some running around Toronto. The best days always end with playing a show.

What in your life is really important to you?

Fun! Enjoying it. Even when it’s busy, I try to find the joy in everything. Balance is also key. Sometimes I just need to go for a walk or do some yoga. And sometimes everything is not about me and I want to spend time with people that I love. Music is very important to me, but the journey is everything.

Angela 1

Dress: Jayne washed stripe shirtdress – Mandala Design $138; Bracelet: Myka $159; Shoes: Lonna MaryJane – Hush Puppies $100

Style Coach Notes- Angela looks amazing in this dress with its vibrant colours and the black accents.  The style suits her figure well (and a lot of figures!) with the band that accentuates a high waistline and then the skirt that just flows over hips. ~Laura-Jean

What would you like to be remembered for?

Uplifting people. My voice. My songs. Maybe even in that order.

What role does fashion play in your life?

Being onstage is a big part of what I do, and what I look like is a pretty big part of being “Angela Saini.” Feeling confident, and being comfortable are really important to me, onstage and off, and those two things play a role in every fashion decision I make.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

Amazing designs! Very forward and fresh looks for everyday wear. I can feel very comfortable and super cute at the same time! Dressing up or dressing down in style is easy to do when you have such great options.

20140908_144604

Dress: Greta Chain Sheath – Mandala Design $148; Bracelet: Myka $159; Shoes: Edye Lonna Heel – Hush Puppies $100

Style Coach notes – Angela was drawn to this dress immediately, and we both loved the bright olive green colour on her.  The shape comes in subtly at the waist, but it’s in no way clingy so it’s comfortable and flattering.  This dress packs amazingly well so it would be great for Angela’s busy tour schedule, or for anyone who travels. ~Laura-Jean

What do you have that you want to promote?

I am playing at The Toronto Centre for the Arts (5040 Yonge St.) Thursday, September 18th at 7:30pm for the “Bare Bones and Up Front” series. The show takes place in The Gallery alongside Spencer Burton. Tickets are $20 on Ticketmaster: click here for more info!

I am going back to Europe and touring Germany, Holland, and England this November. Shows are always up to date at my website: http://www.angelasaini.com

I recently released the music video for “Something Like I’m Beautiful” featuring clothes from Fresh Collective. Also broadcast on VMix on OMNI TV nation-wide.

Fresh Collective Style Profile – Sophia Perlman

I met Sophia last year, when she sent us a picture of herself performing in a Paper People Clothing dress similar to the one she is modeling here.  We chatted a bit through Facebook several times about various things and just got to know each other through there.  She told me how much she LOVES Fresh Collective, and how she has bought a lot from us over the years, and it just seemed a natural match to feature her as a Style Profile model, especially given the launch of her tour!  Make sure you check out this lovely lady at a gig near you soon!

- Laura-Jean Bernhardson, CEO and founder of Fresh Collective

Name: Sophia Perlman

Occupation: Singer, musician, teacher and creative co-consipriator

Age: 29

Lifestyle: Always on an adventure of some kind.

SAMSUNG CSC

Style Coach Notes: When Sophia isn’t performing, her lifestyle is pretty casual, so this dress is great. It doubles as a tunic, and can be worn with leggings or skinny jeans. (Dress: Panel Tee dress – Desserts and Skirts $88, Necklace: Hand inked & dyed turquoise locket – Curious Oddities $32, Shoes: Lonna T-bar – Hush Puppies $100)

What’s a typical day like for you? A typical day means that it wasn’t anything like any other day I’ve had, and will probably not be like any other day to follow! Some days I’m performing, other days I’m teaching (everything from Kindergarten to College), or living my double  life as my own booking agent/manager/publicist. Rare days are the ones where I get to hide out at home and practice or work on my songwriting – when the weather’s nice, I’ll take Tallulah – my precious junk-shop rescue accordion out and find somewhere outside to sing and practice (which I think my neighbour upstairs much prefers to my staying home!). Most days will be a combination of some or all of the above. I have a hard time keeping still at the best of times. Luckily my husband Adrean, who is also a musician, is really grounded and patient and into doing things one at a time. He helps me remember to slow down and keeps me grounded!

Lifestyle: Marathon Runner, World Traveller, Brand Evangelist, Masters in Education, Digital Media Expert, Vintage Fashion Obsessed, & former Beauty Queen.

Style Coach Notes: A maxi dress is a must for hot summer days, and the dramatic print of this one suits Jennifer’s style to a tee! This dress is flattering on many different figures because of the band under the bust, the low neck and then the cut of the skirt. It flows over tummies and hips just right and creates a long lean line.

What’s a typical day like for you?  It always differs, but I try to start my day with a morning run to get my energy flowing. From there my days are usually filled with client meetings, lunches, work, and various fashion events in the evenings.  I never have a boring day which is why I LOVE Toronto because there is never a dull moment in this electrifying city.

What in your life is really important to you?  Family.  I am the eldest of six children and have a very loving relationship with my 3 brothers and 2 sisters. They mean the world to me.
