Fresh Collective Style Profile – Michelle Planche

I met Michelle Planche last year when I was a judge in the Art of Fashion competition for emerging designers. Michelle is passionate about providing opportunities for designers, as am I, so we were a natural partnership.  We created a project together- a seminar called the Retailer’s Point of View and The Ultimate Holiday Dress Competition.  Michelle and I also serve on the board of Fashion Group International together.

Fresh Collective Style Profile – Sonia Shklarov

I met Sonia through Evan Malach, who is the creator of the play, “A Simple Twist of Fate” where she plays The Fiddler.  I met Evan because I was driving up Augusta Avenue in Kensington Market one day and I saw a wallet that looked freshly dropped.  I pulled over and picked it up, did a little googling and tracked down its owner who was Evan.  We chatted and he told me about the play, which is being put on in a gorgeous synagogue just down the street from the store, so we thought it was a great connection to promote his play on the Fresh Collective Style Profile.  Sonia was a delight to work with, and everything she put on looked great!  It was hard to narrow it down to just 3 outfits to showcase!

– Laura-Jean Bernhardson, CEO and founder, Fresh Collective

 Name: Sonia Shklarov

Occupation: Violinist

Age: 27

Lifestyle: active

Sonia’s petite and fit frame suits this dress that shows off her legs and shoulders. We added a silk scarf tied as a belt - in a rosette style no less!- to show how this dress can be dressed up, but it’s equally great with flat sandals for a casual walk in the park on a sunny afternoon.

What’s a typical day like for you? I like to make my days a balance of work, fitness, and socializing / community engagement. The summer is the best time to do all three! As a freelance violinist, I’m in charge of my own schedule – but that doesn’t mean I don’t have the responsibility to do a certain amount of work each day. If the night isn’t too late (sometimes I don’t get home ‘til 12 or 1am after a concert), I wake up before 8 and go for some type of workout. If there’s time, I try to squeeze in a short meditation before getting on with my day! Then, I love to head to a cafe for some social networking – work e-mails, business calls, updating social media sites, etc. These things are a huge part of my life as I’m constantly expanding my professional network, which is essential for a freelancer. After lunch is when I get the bulk of my work done: practicing violin, going to rehearsals, editing new musical ideas, and the occasional meeting. This is when I feel the most inspired and productive! In the evenings, I either go to a concert (my own, or a colleague’s), or out with friends – though during very busy music seasons, more practicing and rehearsals. Of course, all of this can change in a heartbeat during orchestra season (September to May) – days become packed with rehearsals, traveling, and more practice!

What in your life is really important to you? Music – namely, violin, staying in shape musically, keeping all parts of my work balanced. Also, learning – musical, spiritual, social. Also, I’ve been blessed with an amazing circle of family and friends, which is an element I intend to cherish and maintain – the people closest to me make me happy and I would do anything to make them happy in return.

What would you like to be remembered for? My smile, my energy, and shining a light into any one person’s life.

Style Coach Notes: This is the more dramatic of the looks we chose for Sonia, and thought this dress would be good for an opening night party of the play or for interviews from the media. While it makes a statement, it’s comfortable and flowy for dancing the night away. We kept the accessories simple with a delicate brass bird necklace and red bead earrings.

What role does fashion play in your life? Well, I hardly thought about it until I moved to Toronto in August 2012! Recently, fashion has really changed for me – expectations are different, and people here are more fashion-conscious than they are anywhere I’ve lived in my adult life. As a woman, I feel like my outfit says a lot about me – simple, confident; or sophisticated; complex, casual, or high-maintenance. I think it’s a power to effect how people perceive you – like it or not, it’s the first impression people get! It’s been a bit of an experimenting trip for me.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? I love how the salespeople are so friendly and helpful! All the colours of the outfits are amazing, and they really bring out the character of the person wearing them – as well as encourage us to take risks; try something new that perhaps we didn’t consider before. The dresses are great for many occasionals and are super comfortable – definitely on my list of stores to return to very soon!

Style Coach Notes:This is a simple and pretty look for Sonia. The rich colour looks stunning on her and the cut skims her curves without hugging tight anywhere. The fabric is light and airy, and this is a perfect summer dress for a wedding or event. It can be worn so many ways: for example belted or not, with a variety of scarves, with a blazer, wrap or shrug. A dress like this is a blank canvas for your accessories. For this look, we tied the black in the shoes together with the black in the scarf - simple, easy and looks great!

What are you up to these days? My music, to add a spark to any occasion, or give special concerts! I’m classically-trained, so lots of my work is with classical music – Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Brahms .. but I love touching the community through other musical styles, such as Klezmer, traditional Jewish tunes that people haven’t heard in years, movie music from the 30’s, the Beatles, contemporary popular songs, and that’s just scratching the surface. This July, I’m involved in a musical production for the Fringe Festival, called A Simple Twist of Faith – please check out the details below!

This summer, the Kiever Shul, a synagogue in the heart of Kensington Market, will be home to one of the most compelling new shows at the Toronto Fringe Festival. A Simple Twist of Faith is a heartfelt musical that tells the story of a Jewish American soldier during World War One whose experience in a German synagogue changes the course of his life. Audiences are treated to a mobile experience through the historic Kiever Shul in this innovative piece of Site-Specific theatre. The musical features some of Toronto’s finest musicians and shares an unforgettable story not to be missed. Just in time for the beginning of the hundredth anniversary of The Great War, this is a must-see Fringe show that will uplift and inspire.

*Sonia will be playing the role of the fiddler, a mystical pied piper type who leads audiences around and through the historic building with her captivating violin playing. Any patrons who come see the show, visit the merchandise table, say you came because of Fresh Collective Style Blog and receive the Official Cast Recording of the show at a discount.

Style Profile – Pip Bradford

Those of you who have been to Roncy when Pip is in the store may have received some cookies, some fashion advice or just had a good laugh.  She is our honorary Fresh Collective employee and a pleasure to know.

I first met Pip during a Wardrobe Makeover last summer. From the moment she walked into the store exclaiming that “Pip is here!” I knew that this girl was something special.  Pip is super outgoing and not afraid to speak her mind.  She loves our store and our designers and we love Pip.  She is not afraid to try something new and loves to go outside of her comfort zone with fashion.  Her clothes always match her personality and her amazing tattoos and she just radiates happiness.

Anyone that gets to meet her instantly falls in love with her and the party really doesn’t start until Pip has arrived!  She is a woman of many talents and an absolute pleasure to be around.  I look forward to the days that I know she is coming for a visit, and when it’s a surprise it’s even better!

– Joe McKiernan; Store Leader Fresh Collective Roncesvalles

Name: Sarah “Pip” Bradford
Occupation: Production Manager/Stage Manager/Theatre Technician
Age: 31
Lifestyle: Saying one “works hard and plays hard” makes one sound like a frat boy, but there you go.

SAMSUNG CSC

Dress: Gwen Poppy Print Dress – Mandala Design $148
Shoes: Lonna T-Bar Black – Hush Puppies $100

Style Coach Notes: Pip has a big, bold and vibrant personality so a print like this is perfect for her. This dress is also practical for her life on the go. Pockets allow her a place to tuck things, and the the easy but flattering fit allows a lot of movement for a busy gal like Pip. This dress can easily be worn in various ways- more professionally with a fitted black linen or cotton blazer or with a belted cardigan and tights in cooler weather for example.

What’s a typical day like for you?

As a freelance theatre artist, there really isn’t such a thing as a typical day. I could be organizing a bi-lingual Spanish/English festival with artists from across the Americas; rehearsing a children’s show; or installing technical elements for a different play, usually all at once. Given that I usually start work between 8 and 10am and end my night with a drink with friends as late as 11pm, I can often spend up to sixteen hours a day on the go.

What in your life is really important to you?

It can be really hard to prioritize when you have so many things happening! I’m very lucky that so many of the most important people in my life work with me often, so I don’t have to choose between my friends and my career, which I think are my big two.

My current extracurricular passions include comic books (I give the part of my paycheque that doesn’t go to Fresh Collective to The Beguiling on Markham Street), youth mentorship in the arts, and learning to do things I don’t know how to do. I just taught myself how to cook (like a grownup!), and now I’m teaching myself how to silkscreen. I love challenging myself!

SAMSUNG CSC

Dress: Dandelion Dress – Desserts and Skirts $125
Necklace: Ch-ch-chains – BurfurtArt $57
Shoes: Lonna T-bar Tan – Hush Puppies $100

Style Coach Notes: This dress is a soft and comfy jersey- again great for a girl on the go! It looks so great Pip could attend an important meeting but she could also ride her bike there in this dress. This dress flatters most figures because of the cut. The band shows off a waistline while the skirt just flows easily over tummy and hips. And the drape of the fabric is just gorgeous.

What would you like to be remembered for?

My brains, my guts, and my ability to hold my liquor.

What role does fashion play in your life?

I have a big personality, and I look to fashion to help me express that.

With so much of my time spent on-the-go, it’s important to me that I’m always ready for anything. I mean, I could leave my house thinking I’m just going to supervise a work call for a few hours, but by the end of the day I’ve managed to also fit in a lunch meeting, a hundred errands, and a first date with an exciting new person…and in the right dress, I can do all of it!

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

Hanging out with Joe.

Ah, I joke! I mean, I do love Joe, but there’s so much more than that to love about shopping at Fresh Collective. The whole staff is great, and they always remember my style and have ready recommendations based on their excellent knowledge of the designers they stock. And the designers! I am locked in a years-long love affair with Mandala Designs (I cannot wait to get my hands on her summer line!), and I think I own four different versions of the Skirts and Desserts Frill Dress. There’s always something new and exciting to check out every time I go in!

SAMSUNG CSC

Dress: Annete Dress – Studio Fresh $179
Shoes: Lonna T-Bar Black – Hush Puppies $100

Style Coach Notes: Another fantastic dress for Pip. This one is a little off-beat with the patchy fabric and awesome print. The fit is flattering and easy- a little fitted in the top and more loose and skimming in the skirt. The top is a stretch fabric which allows Pip a lot of movement and comfort for her busy life!

What do you have that you want to promote?

Okay, guys, I tried to choose just one thing, but I have to go with two, in chronological order:

I’m a huge fan of comic books and graphic novels, and the Toronto Comic Arts Festival starts TOMORROW! Comic artists from all over the world will be coming here for a whole week of fun, concluding in a two-day vendor fair and exhibition at the Toronto Reference Library on May 10th and 11th. This is my first year working with TCAF, and I’m the head volunteer for their kids’ programming at the library. There’s also TCAF Kids’ Day 2014 at St. Paul’s, a whole day of kids’ programming including author presentations from a huge roster of amazing authors and artists! Visit www.torontocomics.com for more info about the whole exciting event!

ALSO, I’m presenting my first interactive installation art piece as a performer/creator in Toronto at the Toronto Fringe Festival this summer! Flip The Table will be debuting in the Fringe Club behind Honest Ed’s from July 2-13, and it’s just what it sounds like: You choose your table setting (anything from picnic to full high tea), pick a scenario you want to act out (ever want to tell your boss what you REALLY think about her?), and then you come in and flip that table! It’s about exploiting taboos, exploring freedom, and making the biggest mess you possibly can in a 10’x10’ tent. We’re still in development, but you can check out more about it at www.flipthefringe.wordpress.com or via our Twitter @flipthefringe closer to the festival (bookmark it now, you’re not gonna want to miss this!). For info about all the fun stuff going down at Fringe this year, check out www.fringetoronto.com.

Is there anything else we should know about you?

What, I haven’t told you enough already?

(Special thanks to our neighbours, Sweetpeas, on Roncesvalles Avenue for letting us shoot in their gorgeous flower and gift shop.

Style Profile – Rebecca Eckler

Dress: Patsy Cline – Annie 50 $184
Bracelet: Ch-Ch-Chains – BurfurtART $65
Shoes: Lonna T-Bar in rose – Hush Puppies $100

Style Coach Notes: Rebecca wanted a fun and bold look for her book launch. This dress with the fun and vibrant floral pattern was just the number to have her looking and feeling great. This dress suits her style and her petite frame, and she loved it so much, she bought it plus the shoes after our photo shoot!

What’s a typical day like for you?

Today, I got up at 7 a.m., woke up my daughter Rowan, age 10, to get her out of bed and get ready for school. Brought Holt, my son, 22 months, downstairs. Raced for personal training from 7:30 to 8 a.m. Went back home. Drove daughter to school. Head back to home office (trying to ignore the dozen 2 year-olds over because it’s my turn to host play group.) Spend about an hour procrastinating on Facebook. I pitched a couple of stories. They were accepted, which means I have to write them. Worked on story for Canadian Parents and also researching next book. Rush to pick up daughter at school and then usually she has a dance class or play practice (so I sit in my car and write!) Now, with The Mommy Mob about to launch, it’s a bit busier, doing press, and getting the word out there. Some days are busier than others. When I finally get home, it’s about reading to Holt before he goes to bed, and making sure my daughter gets her homework done (My life sounds so fun doesn’t it?). Then House of Cards! (And sometimes I get my Mommy On and party! SHH!)

What in your life is really important to you?

My children. My friends. Art. Music. Books. Reading. Fashion. My fiancé, Jordan. Jared Leto (who is not my fiancé.) Cheesecake. Beaches and sun!

1397674256426 (1)

Dress: Annette Dress – Studio Fresh $179
Boots and jewellery – Rebecca’s own

Style Coach Notes: This dress suits Rebecca’s boho style and we styled it with the slouchy boots Rebecca wore on the day of the shoot and her own jewellery. This dress is a perfect casual-yet-arty dress for a busy, cool mom-on-the-go like Rebecca. It’s got just enough shaping in the bodice to give it a flattering silhouette.  Although it suits Rebecca’s slender frame perfectly, it is just as lovely on larger ladies.

What would you like to be remembered for?

Now, that’s a tough one! Probably being a good mother. But I can tell you all the things I DON’T want to be remembered for!

But I think helping other women, who have read my books or blogs, to know that they are not alone, especially when it comes to Post Partum Depression or the right to have the option of what FEMALES want to do with their bodies, when it comes to birth. I would also liked to be remembered for my cooking. Which will never happen. Oh well.

SAMSUNG CSC

Dress: Amy Dress in navy dots – Michelle Carey $198
Necklace: Ch-Ch-Chains belt (worn as a necklace) – BurfurtART $85
Bracelet: Ch-Ch-Chains – BurfurtART $65
Shoes: Lonna T-Bar in rose – Hush Puppies $100

Style Coach Notes: This fun and flirty dotted dress needed just a bit of edge to suit Rebecca’s style, so we went heavy metal with the chain necklace and bracelet. The shape accentuates an hourglass silhouette, and is a perfect dress for networking, a book launch or press interviews – or maybe, a well-deserved date night with her guy.

What role does fashion play in your life?

I love fashion. I love the Boho Chic look. My fiancé will tell you he likes me in a “slutty” look, so I always have to say, “You need to see it on me, not just on the hanger!” And then he always loves my fashion choices, which are NOT “slutty.” I like to be a little unique with fashion. I’m not into shopping at huge department stores.

I love boutiques, where you know you’re not going to be wearing the same thing as others! Fashion, like writing, is creative. So I always add something creative to my outfit, be it a funky bracelet, or necklace. I think Jennifer Aniston is my role model. She looks great in motorcycle boots and jeans, and she looks amazing on the red carpet. Also, I still have clothes that I’ve kept that are at least ten years old. I think that saying, “If you don’t wear it for a year, toss it!” is BS. Guess what? Fashion comes around again! (Even if it’s ten years later!) And now I’m noticing that my daughter has a better wardrobe than me! It was a sad parenting moment.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

Well, I didn’t walk out of the store empty handed as you know! I think that says it all! That morning I stopped by [for the photo shoot] I was not planning to walk out with a new pair of pants, dress, and shoes! I just loved them so much that I couldn’t NOT buy them! I also love that the staff will help you put together an outfit if you’re not 100% sure about it. They’re not going to let you leave looking like crap! And I love that many of the pieces are really one-of-a-kind. It’s so awful of me, but I feel that Fresh Collective is somewhat of a secret find in Toronto. I kind of don’t want everyone to know about it! Kidding.

SAMSUNG CSC

Dress: Alissa dress in pink and grey dots – Bionic $119
Bracelet: Ch-Ch-Chains – BurfurtART $45
Shoes: Lonna T-Bar in black – Hush Puppies $100

Style Coach Notes: This stunning dress is another winner for Rebecca. The print is fun and the cut is sophisticated with the body conscious shaping. The gathering at the hip creates subtle style and shaping to accentuate a waistline and flatter most figures. This is another fabulous, versatile style for Rebecca’s busy life and crazy schedule!

What do you have that you want to promote?

My ninth book, The Mommy Mob, is coming out at the end of the month! It’s a book for anyone who is a mother, plans to be one, or wonder what is it’s like to be a mother in the year 2014. Mothers have become so judgmental to each other, it is out of control. In The Mommy Mob, readers will get to see the hate mail and comments I receive, while I try to figure out when mothers became so vicious to one another. I’m really a very loyal, girl’s girl, so I can’t comprehend how vicious and outrageous and insane some mothers are when they disagree with some aspect of parenting. You can buy it here: order The Mommy Mob.

You WILL laugh so hard you might cry. The Mommy Mob shows what *some* mothers can be like. It’s like the scariest playground in the world, when it comes to mommy bloggers, which my book focuses on. You’ll read it and think, “Wow! And I thought I had a bad day. Look what Eckler has to go through!”

Is there anything else we should know about you? I want a puppy, just so I can name him/her “Raisin.” But I don’t think it’s going to happen. And I’m not very good at parking. At all.

Style Profile – Patty K

Patty is one of the most fabulous people in my life. We chat about makeup and men and then head out for trivia nights. Brainy and beautiful would be a limiting description of this woman. Patty captures her spunky energy in every way she styles herself; from fabulous nail art to creative accessories that all work for her lifestyle. Each outfit we chose accentuates Patty’s figure that she’s ready to show off after dropping over 100 pounds since 2012.

We’ve become great friends in short amount of time through our love of fashion. We stopped in at our local Kensington cafe – The Grind House – for a fun morning photo shoot. And to cheers to our friendship over our other love, coffee!  <3 Terri-Leigh

Name: Patty Kamarinos
Occupation: Makeup Artist + Esthetician + Beauty Blogger
Age: 30-something but who’s counting?
Lifestyle: one part Girl about town, two parts social butterfly with a sprinkle of introversion to recharge.

outfit1

Dress: A-Line dress in red – Atelier B $175.00
Necklace: Curious Oddities $26.00
Belt: Kimono belt in brown – Susana Erazo $160.00
Shoes: Lonna T in Black – Hush Puppies $100.00

The A-line cut of this dress was perfect for Patty’s hourglass shape. I wanted to accent her curves without over emphasizing. The rule of thirds really helped in creating this – keeping the portions suitable to her height and figure. The belt also created a more defined waist and becomes a great accent piece.

What’s a typical day like for you?
Beautifying urban goddesses & satiating my adventurous curiosities with the help of copious amounts of caffeine.

What in your life is really important to you?
Being surrounded by amazing people whether it be family, friends, colleagues or clients. There’s a special place in my heart for my nephew, Niko, though. That kid is my sunshine.

What would you like to be remembered for?
Inspiring and allowing people to see the natural beauty they possess.

outfit2

Dress: Calamity Jane dress in Black – Annie 50 $179.00
Bracelet: Rock Candy – BurfurtART $45.00

Patty is a bit of a rock star but still professional. The clean lines and knee length hem of the dress keep this outfit age appropriate without limiting her personality. Again, an accentuated waist helps to maintain proportions without distracting from her silhouette.

What role does fashion play in your life?
Fashion is the root of my inspiration as a makeup artist. The colours, the textures, the lines; it not only ignites inspiration for makeup ideas but invites a freedom of expression of how I want to present myself to the world.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?
I love that it is Toronto-centric and supports local designers.

What do you have that you want to promote?
I have been running my beauty blog, Inside The Makeup Case  for a few years now. It’s a great outlet for me to share looks, tips and my professional expertise with my audience and is the catalyst for allowing me to constantly research what new products, trends and techniques are out there.

Dress: Kladis wrap dress in Leopard -Bionic $119.00
Necklace: Rock Candy w Extender – BurfurtART $57.00

The sleeve length on this wrap dress was a happy discovery for us as we picked out necklines that Patty could move in. This dress can carry her from work with an added cropped jacket or cardigan (perfect for her waist height) and then removed for a night out. The leopard print shows off her energy without being too bold for her shape.

Is there anything else we should know about you?
Since making a huge lifestyle change that allowed me to lose 130 lbs last year, I also have a tumblr that focuses on clean recipes that are delicious and nutritious; a way for me to keep an online recipe box of sorts.

If you’re looking for the best hair you’ve ever had, I suggest you see Amanda at The Joint Hair Salon!

Shoes: Lonna T-bar in Black – Hush Puppies $100.00
Earrings: Curious Oddities $22.00
Necklace: Curious Oddities $30.00

Amanda isn’t used to unleashing her inner pin up girl, yet she did it so well in this sassy leopard number! We went for neutral colours for all of her outfits so her pink hair would be the colour accent. This leopard dress with the curved bottom, curved sleeves, low neckline and fitted waist shows off Amanda’s lovely shape kept fit from all her roller derby.

What’s a typical day like for you?
I wake up, check my roller derby email (I am part of Toronto Roller Derby and have been involved with it for 8 years. I play on our all star team CN Power). It’s my second, unpaid job!! I am my league’s liaison with the WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) and I also hold 3 jobs with them. Sheesh right? I then get ready for my real job and head to The Joint Hair Salon and do hair! I am there 5 days a week. Two days a week I add on an additional 3 hours and head up to Downsview for roller derby practice and at least once a week I do some strength training with my coach Ron at ironliontraining.com. Then I head home and crash!

What in your life is really important to you?
My mom, my business, my family (blood, work and derby), roller derby, strength training, personal downtime and taking care of myself both physically and mentally.

What would you like to be remembered for?
My work, my business, my loyalty in friendship and life in general. My mark in the roller derby world.

Dress: Linen Shirt Dress – Atelier B $164.00
Belt: Ch-Ch-Ch-Chains Belt – BurfurtArt (also converts to necklace) $85.00
Tights and Boots: Amanda’s own

The linen shirt dress is a minimal blank canvas, so we made it more “Amanda” by adding the chain belt. We styled the outfit with her own motorcycle boots. Again, a trim shape that shows off her waist works for Amanda, and the A-line skirt creates even more of an hourglass shape.

What role does fashion play in your life?
I have always enjoyed having my own sense of fashion. I’ve never had a ton of money to spend on clothes so I have become very good at mixing and matching! Being in the fashion industry with all things hair, I am always on the up and up with current hair and fashion trends. I like to represent as much as possible and inspire others.

What do you love about Fresh Collective?
FC really inspired me to bring out my inner “girly”. Wearing these dresses really brought something out in me. I’ve worked hard to get fit and the clothing at FC flattered me in a way I hadn’t really ever seen. I also love that FC carries local designer brands. Being a small business owner in the city, I love to support my fellow local artisans.

What do you have that you want to promote?
I would like to promote my business. The Joint Hair Salon. It’s an amalgamation of my old salon, The Third Floor Hair Boutique, and Pop Hair Design. We opened up in July and are going strong! Come by for all your hair and makeup needs!

Also my roller derby team CN Power and league Toronto Roller Derby. It takes up a lot of my time and has for years. I am passionate about the sport and am thankful to have been able to be part of it and it’s growth all of these years.

Dress: Frill Dress – Desserts and Skirts $165.00
Bracelet: Rock Candy – BurfurtArt (can be worn as a necklace with an extender piece) $45.00
Shoes: Lonna T-Bar in Rose – Hush Puppies $100.00

This dress is very girly compared to much of what Amanda wears, and it works fabulously as a contrast to her more “rock ‘n’ roll” looks. With the frills and the very sweet girly shape, plus the demure longer skirt, this is an eye-catching look for Amanda that’s fun, flirty and sexy in a very subtle way. The tailoring – the waist darts and band that are a bit retro and very shapely – on this dress is perfect for Amanda’s figure.

Is there anything else we should know about you?
I am originally from North Bay Ontario and love to go home as much as possible to visit my mom and breath the fresh northern air! I love being outdoors and am most happy if I’m near a beach.
I’ve played in bands most of my life and realized in the last 5 or more years that I love playing the drums! They are currently piled up in my living room as my busy lifestyle doesn’t allow any room for music at the moment but I am not finished with that part of my life yet!!
Also, I am travelling to the UK, for the first time ever with CN Power next week to participate in a tournament in London. I haven’t travelled a ton in my lifetime and this will be my first time overseas! Eeep!! Wish us luck!!

Style Profile – Emilia Farrace

In this edition of our Style Profile series, we feature Emilia, a creative professional and CEO of a creative agency. Here she shares her love of life, her glowing personality and some daring looks for business and play!

Name: Emilia Farrace
Occupation: Founder + Creative Director at Simply Elaborate Creative Agency
Age: 29
Lifestyle: On the go, with a full schedule, iPhone in one hand, coffee in the
other, and a smile on – always.

2014-03-14 12.41.57

Dress: Hourglass dress – Obakki $280.00
Bag: Malone – Matt & Nat $130.00
Ring: Curious Oddities $25.00
Shoes: Black Lonna T-bar – Hush Puppies $100.00

Emilia runs her own creative agency, and this dress is perfect for landing that big new client. With the clean but bold lines, it’s very sophisticated and grown up, and in it she presents the image of a very confident and powerful woman who can get results for her clients. Because Emilia is young, and looks radiant and youthful, she may find some people don’t take her seriously as a business woman. This dress erases any doubt that she is the one for the job, and that she can get the work done! The colour blocking plays up and flatters her curves, but the high neckline and below knee length is all business.

What’s a typical day like for you?
Not typical! Rarely do I have two days that are the same, but that’s where the fun is! I’m always meeting people: potential, current and old clients, friends, family and usually it’s all over Toronto and the GTA – so I need to be in clothes that are comfortable and versatile.

What in your life is really important to you?
It’s really important for me to maintain a balance in my life of personal and professional activities. My family and friends will always be number one, and it’s really important to me to cultivate and strengthen those bonds constantly. Also, working with Scribble Me Silly, art for kids, is very important as I feel it’s a great opportunity to allow those that are transitioning into teenagers, and then young adults feel empowered and strong in their lives.

Dress: Linen Shirt Dress – Atelier B $164.00
Shoes: Rose Lonna T-bar – Hush Puppies $100.00

This is a great piece for Emilia’s wardrobe because of its versatility. It can be worn in cooler weather with tights and a sweater or blazer, and in the summer it’s a no fuss stand alone piece. The fitted waist and flared skirt accentuates Emilia’s body and complements her curves beautifully. On its own, it’s casual and fun. With accessories, she can change the look from business to flirty, and everything in between. Atelier B makes great minimalist pieces that fit beautifully and are a blank canvas for your self-expression.

What would you like to be remembered for?
I really feel strongly about helping other people share their voice with the world. I love helping others in all aspects of my life and would love to be known for being there for them in need, and when just having a ball.

What role does fashion play in your life?
I love having fashionable, and classic items as part of my wardrobe. I spend more time paying attention to business growth so when I find something that fits, looks good and makes me feel good – it needs to last.

Dress: Marjorie – Melow $184.00
Bracelet: Rock Candy – BurfurtART $45.00
Shoes: Tan Lonna T-bar – Hush Puppies $100.00

Obviously this colour is just stunning on Emilia’s skin tone. She just radiates! Bold colours say “I’m confident!” and the shape and drape of this dress allow you to really feel poised. With the double layer of fabric, and the drape created by the wrap, there is plenty to hide anything you may not want to show in the tummy area. The lines created by the wrap create a strong hourglass shape. The fabric also has a fantastic swing to it when you walk and is soft and comfortable to wear. The tan shoes are a great neutral to complete the look, and complement the orange dress and the brown and golden tones of Emilia’s hair and skin.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?
I love that the clothes feel like they’re made for my body. Everyone who I’ve ever dealt with at FC is always willing to help and find the clothes for me to try on – because they know my style just by the clothes I walk in wearing. They always dead-on with their choices.

What do you have that you want to promote?
I founded Simply Elaborate Creative Agency that specializes in helping small to medium sized businesses develop their brands, design and develop their websites, and we also take care of social media content creation! We love partnering with our clients to create customizable and easy-to-use websites.

Is there anything else we should know about you?
I just started learning how to knit! Although, I’m not very good at closing infinity scarves, I definitely love seeing the scarf get longer!!

Style Profile – Brandy King

For this Style Profile, we went to Brandy’s favourite restaurant near our Queen Street store, Sud Forno to show off some great pieces from our spring collections. Whenever Brandy makes a trip into Toronto from Cambridge, the two musts on her list are Fresh Collective and Sud Forno! It’s obvious this photographer has great taste and the gorgeous restaurant proved to be the perfect backdrop for Brandy’s naturally beautiful style.

Name: Brandy King
Occupation: Photographer, Business Owner
Age: 32

Marjorie dress by Melow par Melissa Bolduc.  $184.
Floral Trave Sling Shoes by Hush Puppies, $80.
Dyed Howlite necklace by Curious Oddites.  $55.

I chose this outfit for Brandy with her lifestyle in mind.  Brandy’s always on the go, and this comfortable yet polished dress is just the thing to get her through a summer day.  She can get up and go (in comfortable flats!), do a bit of editing then head out to meet a client.Next would be some errands and a lunch date with her hubby, and then some more meetings. She could even go straight to a dinner out with the girls or with her in-laws, looking fantastic from morning to night.

This dress is flattering for any figure with the draping caused by the wrap.  It accentuates an hourglass shape and falls gently over tummy and hips.  Best of all, with the layers of fabric, it doesn’t reveal every little detail of what’s underneath.

What’s a typical day like for you?

My days are filled with as much inspiration as I can pack into them.

I start most days with exercise and a good breakfast and then I’m off to the races. If I’m not shooting photographs, I’m editing them, meeting with clients, working on my website or other promotional material to help share my art with the community.

It’s also important to me to spend quality time with my supportive (and dare I say handsome) husband, amazing friends and wonderful family.

What in your life is really important to you?

Doing what I love and making beautiful things. It seems simple but sometimes, making time for what you love can be the hardest thing you ever do. It’s worth it.

Also, it’s important to be myself and be happy, as often as I can be.

brandy amy dress-bkgrdedit

Amy Dress by Michelle Carey.  $198.
Rose Lonna T-Bar Shoes by Hush Puppies. $100.
Soutache Necklace by Victoria Sorkin. $85.

This playful dress is a perfectly fun look for Brandy.  The fitted empire waist and full skirt compliment her curves and show off her tiny waist.  The dots suit her joyful and creative personality, and we chose rose coloured shoes and a matching necklace to add an extra touch of femininity.

This is a great dress for lot of occasions and can be styled in many ways to get various looks.  Brandy can try a light belted cardigan over top to make it slightly more serious, tights, boots and a blazer for cooler weather, and a red belt and red shoes for a nautical feel.  When a dress looks this great, you want to find a lot of excuses to wear it!

What would you like to be remembered for?

If I am to be remembered, I’d like it to be for inspiring people to do what they love and for loving without condition.

What role does fashion play in your life?

Fashion plays two MAJOR roles for me.

It’s the art I live my life in. It gives me confidence as a business owner and a woman, to go out in the world everyday and engage people about my
own art.
It’s the paint on my canvas (so to speak). My specialty is photographing people, so what they wear is a huge part of the final image. I try to help coach my clients on what will work well for the final image we are trying to create.

Fresh Collective stands behind the unique product they sell. I love that they support local designers and that you know the pieces you leave with will last for years. The service is also outstanding.

Melina Jacket by Melow par Melissa Bolduc.  $160.00
High Rise Skinny Yoga Jeans.  $120.00
Rose Lonna T-Bar Shoes by Hush Puppies.  $100.00
Peach Malone Bag by Matt & Nat.  $130.00
Ring by Curious Oddities.  $25.00
Hand printed and dyed Scarf by Katie Walker.  $40.00

As a creative professional, it’s important for Brandy to show up to see clients looking polished and, well, fabulous.  As a photographer, her clients are trusting her visual judgement so presenting herself well put together is a great opportunity to show her taste and sense of colour, scale and shape. This unique jacket is perfect for Brandy with it’s simple styling, asymmetrical shape and easy style.  It’s trim and polished, and oh so stylish.  The asymmetry is flattering to almost any woman’s body as diagonal lines play up length and an hourglass shape.

The Yoga Jeans Brandy’s wearing look oh-so- casual and ever-so-stylish.  They also allow total freedom of movement and comfort which is essential for Brandy’s busy life.  The hand printed scarf adds an artistic flair and the pink shoes and purse add a playful and feminine touch.

Brooch: Curious Oddities $24.00
Belt: Kimono Belt – Susanna Erazo $160.00
Shoes: Athena in cherry red by Miz Mooz $145.00

What’s a typical day like for you? None of my days are typical. If I’m not meeting with new designers, I’m organizing media opportunities or special partnerships for Fresh Collective, following up on emails and reviewing our social media conversations. I’m at fashion shows, networking events, or budget meetings. In the evenings, my schedule has some continuity. Sunday/Monday/Tuesday nights I can be found on my roller skates at the Bunker (home of Toronto Roller Derby) teaching our fresh meat or skating with CN Power, the Toronto All Star Team. Thursdays is a catch up on work night, and Friday/Saturday is date night with my hunky boyfriend.

What in your life is really important to you? My babe-a-licious boyfriend, my friends, my family and my teammates – at FC and in roller derby.

Necklace: Locket – Curious Oddities. $42.00

What would you like to be remembered for? I would like to be remembered for making a difference, and for being a stand for women around the world to find their power, create lives they love and become who they want to be!

What role does fashion play in your life? Fashion is my life! I spend my mornings on the TTC secretly looking at what women are wearing. Are they a FC customer? Do I think they would like the line I just looked at yesterday? Right now, I’m analyzing women’s winter boots. I find women in Toronto wear either a fashion boot (a stylish boot) or, they have on real, hard core winter boots with fluff out the top, like NO sign of winter is going to get into those boots. LOL. Looking at what they’re wearing and how they’re wearing it helps me to get clear about what kind of product we should be carrying at Fresh Collective.

They make quality pieces that build wardrobes. I am so lucky to be surrounded by all of this talent and have the wondrous fortune that these creative people trust me to help them reach the next level. I am inspired and honoured by this trust!

What do you have that you want to promote? I want to promote that we at Fresh Collective are always on the lookout for new, hot Canadian designers. If you are a Canadian designer and would like to have your line carried at Fresh Collective, please go to this link and complete our designer application. And of course I want to promote my love for Toronto Roller Derby. My team, CN Power will be playing March 22/23 in a huge tournament hosted right here in Toronto. Is there anything else we should know about you? I have a mean knock out and draw back (come see roller derby if you want to know what that means!).

Beautiful Wedding, Perfect Shoes.

Quote

Hot off the emails, is this great letter from one of our customers, Kimberly Gale. We worked with Kimberly over three weeks to get her the PERFECT pair of Hush Puppies Lonna Shooties for her February wedding. The result, a beautiful wedding, in the most perfect shoes!

From Kimberly herself:

“Hi Jenna,

As promised, I am attaching photos of the plum Hush Puppies I wore at my wedding. My sister (Wendhi Gale–semi pro photographer snapped the pics) The boots were comfortable and the perfect pop of colour. I thought they looked classic enough to pass off as Victorian boots!

Thank you and Christine at Queen West once again for taking care of me.

Take care, Kimberly “
