Style Profile – Jessica McEwen

Name: Jessica McEwen
Occupation: Florist, owner of Periwinkle Flowers
Age: 40
Lifestyle: Colourful, joyful, creative.

Dress: Annie 50; Necklace: Love, Montreal.

This dress is available online in red, green and black!

What’s a typical day like for you? My days are all over the place. Mostly
I am working, which can mean getting up early to buy flowers at the
wholesale market, or manning my flower shop helping customers and making
flower designs.  Some days I am out delivering and setting up flowers for
events such as weddings. Days off are rare right now but I try to fill
them with bike rides and hanging with my family rather than wasting them
on housework!

What in your life is really important to you? Being happy.  I truly think
happiness is a choice we each get to make from moment to moment. We only
get to live once, so I want to make this life a happy one.

Sweater: Gentle Fawn; Necklace: Curious Oddities; Top: Jennifer Fukushima; Pants: Yoga Jeans.

Shop for this sweater here and for Yoga Jeans here.

What would you like to be remembered for? My patience and acceptance of
others. And also for being a pretty darn good florist.

What role does fashion play in your life? I am obsessed with colour and
pattern, nothing makes me happier than dressing in bright colours and
prints.  I think life is too short not to wear pretty clothes.  For my
work I am often getting dirty and do a lot of lifting and moving, so my
clothes need to be durable and able to take a beating while still looking
good enough to meet with a client at a moments notice, which is a lot to

Top: Melow; Skirt: Desserts and Skirts; Bag: Matt & Nat.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? It’s like Fresh Collective has hooked itself to my brain! I love the eclectic mix of styles, but even more I love that the staff are such a cool creative bunch themselves that they can take in who I am and choose clothes that will show that to the world- it is a true gift.  I’m also trying to be conscious of where I spend my money.  As a small business owner myself, I think it is important to support other small local businesses and makers so that we can all prosper and succeed.

What do you have that you want to promote? I own a flower shop called
Periwinkle Flowers in midtown Toronto.  It’s filled with colour and happy
things, and I get to share my love of flowers with people across the city.
The shop makes and delivers happy colourful flower arrangements across
Toronto, and also carries pretty little things such as soaps and tea
towels made by local designers.  I have a special offer for Fresh Collective fans!  See the details below:

major jar posy

Is there anything else we should know about you? I’ve owned my shop for 14
years, and have come to realize I truly love being a florist!  Hearing
little slices of a customer’s story as I help them pick out flowers for a
friend or loved one is just hands down the best part of my work.

Style Profile – Jennifer Piggott

Name: Jennifer Piggott
Occupation: Event Specialist at Bullfrog Power
Age: 25
Lifestyle: Twentysomething environmentalist

Dress: Leigh Holes Tulip dress by Mandala Design, $138; Necklace by Love Montreal.

What’s a typical day like for you?  After hitting the snooze button a few times, I roll out of bed and get ready for work. I make sure to pick all my clothes for the day the night before or else I’ll spend way too long staring at my closet in a pre-coffee fog. I spend the day working to get the word out about Bullfrog Power’s green energy in every way I can. After a busy day at the office, I head home to throw together vegetarian dinner and get my Netflix on. And then I do it all again the next day!

Bike scarf; Top: Amethyst Tunic by Jennifer Fukushima, $139, Leggings: Essential Leggings by Spanx, $108.

What in your life is really important to you?  It may sound cliché in the age of everyone being a “foodie,” but… food! It makes me happy to enjoy simple things like fresh, local produce or a home-cooked meal.

What would you like to be remembered for? Hmm! Well, if people think of me in a positive way, remember a time I helped put a smile on their face or made them laugh, then that’s good enough for me.

What role does fashion play in your life? I am a comfort-first kind of girl, but love clothes and fashion too. To me, fashion is a balancing act—between comfort and style, high and low-end items and budgeting for new pieces!

Top: Tulip Collar tee by Mandala Design, $78; Skirt: Tilda Flare Midi Skirt by Mandala Design, $98, Necklace: Curious Oddities; Bag, Abiko by Matt & Nat.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? I love the eclectic nature of the pieces and the feeling that I couldn’t find them just anywhere. It’s nice to walk down the street and not see five other people wearing the same top you are!

What do you have that you want to promote?  My friends and family could tell you—I’m always promoting Bullfrog Power! As Canada’s leading green energy provider, Bullfrog makes it easy for individuals and businesses to choose green energy. I also want to give kudos to Fresh Collective, Mandala Design and Jennifer Fukushima for choosing green energy!

Dress: Adiona Maxidress, Encircled, $168; Shrug: Farinosa Shrug, Was $79, now $63.20; Necklace: Makaria- burfurtART, $88

What’s a typical day like for you? I typically start my day off with a run, then spend my day treating patients 5 days a week.  On the weekends I’m often cycling around the city with my friends and/or boyfriend, enjoying the many outdoor treasures the city has to offer.

What in your life is really important to you?  Striving to maintain the optimal balance between good health, social activities and my work.

What would you like to be remembered for? Someone who has helped many people achieve their health goals which enabled them to live happier lives.

Dress: Indra- Creations Encore, $149; Necklace: Real Flower Necklace- Love, Montreal, $30; Bag: Sheenan Doctor Bag, Matt & Nat, $140

What role does fashion play in your life? My career takes up most of the time which can leave very little time for creative, extra-curricular activities.  Putting together unique and well-styled outfits helps bring out my artistic side to accompany my professional day to day life.  I shamelessly love being complimented on my style choices, and extremely proud when the piece is made by a local designer.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? Supporting our local, Canadian businesses and designers!

Style Profile: Sarah Couture McPhail

Name: Sarah Couture McPhail
Occupation: Artist/Student/Community Organizer
Age: 41
Lifestyle: Creative urban mom with a streak of Riot Girl

Dress: Annie 50 Tatsumi Dress $185; Bag: Parabole – Matt & Nat

What’s a typical day like for you? This past summer has been a bit chaotic. I was mostly home with my kids while trying to schedule work, community projects, a couple of trips, daily activities (admittedly the kids watched too much t.v. and played around the yard a lot) in with finding time make art for the group show that just went up last week was hectic. I need a break. I can’t wait for school to start next week. As I age, I realize routine is good. Especially when you have young kids… my kids at least.

What in your life is really important to you? Family. Friends. Community. Art. Politics. All passions.

What would you like to be remembered for? For throwing a good wii dance party/bbq. That would be nice.

What role does fashion play in your life? Fashion is so integral to my identity. While I’m reluctant to say it’s important, having grown up during a time where who you were was identified very much by the clothes you wore (i.e. Punk, Preppy, Raver, Goth, Jocks, Metalhead, Geek etc..), way more than today. Today in many ways anything goes and a lot falls under the “hipster” umbrella. While I fight being a slave to clothes, my morning routine is often a battle with my closet. I can’t help it. I like clothes and it’s ingrained from childhood.

(Above: Sarah talks about what she’s passionate about: Family, art and community.)

Scarf: Black and White Infinity scarf, $35; Top: Pullover – Yasmine Louis; Pants: Dressy Sweatpant – Encircled, $128

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? Quality of the clothes. The atmosphere, and the friendliness and helpfulness of staff. Something for every woman.

What do you have that you want to promote?  I have an Art Show up at Art Square Gallery Cafe across from the AGO. It’s a group show that includes many emerging artists. My encaustics are on the wall just as you enter the Gallery part of the cafe.

Top: Oom Ethikwear; Necklace: Colleen Poitras Skirt: Gloria Solid Flip Skirt – Mandala Design, $88 Bag: Matt & Nat

Dress: Heidi -Mandala Design, $ 168; Necklace: Liberty & Love $ 32; Shoes: Amsterdam – The Art Company, $ 230

Lifestyle: Self-proclaimed hustler. Perfectionist. Networker. Blonde joke advocate. Loves bacon. Super sporty athlete but wants to eat tacos too.

What’s a typical day like for you? 8am alarm goes off. I hit snoozes every 9 mins while checking Twitter and Instagram in bed until just after 9am. 9:05am get pumped for the day ahead. Eat breakfast in front of computer while checking emails, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Work on the computer until I realize that food should probably happen…and soon. Shove food in. Repeat until supper. All of a sudden it is 12am and I should probably stop working now. I write a list of tasks for tomorrow right before a shower. And finally bedtime….but not before checking Instagram just one more time. And sometimes I even throw in meetings throughout the day, in which case I shower and get all dolled up.

What in your life is really important to you? Family. It is the most important thing someone can have. Even if they aren’t biological, you adopt people into your life and they become your family. I am not sure what I would do without these jerks. Love you all.

Cardigan: Cardamine Cardigan – Jennifer Fukushima, $ 169; Top: Charlie Slouch Tee – Mandala Design, $ 58; Pants: Diamond Cropped Pant – Brenda Beddome $139; Bracelet: Leather Bracelet – BurfurtART, $58; Necklace: BurfurtART, $ 34; Purse: Moxy – Matt & Nat, regular price $96, now 20% off at 76.80

What would you like to be remembered for? I used to think I wanted to be remembered for my butt. I realized that those things aren’t the most important things anymore. Now I want to be remembered for my laugh, my smile and how I make people feel when we interact. I hope to inspire people and leave my mark in some moment in their life. And hey…..if they remember my butt, then……bonus!

What role does fashion play in your life? I have gone through MANY style changes over the years. From tomboy to miniskirts and all the way to business suits. I never really knew my style. I knew what looked good on me and what colors brought out my baby blues but not a defined style. It has taken me a long time but I think I know who I am now. I don’t follow trends. I don’t spend thousands on brand name purses but I choose items that will stand the test of time. Fashionable items that are a bit different that are exactly me!

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? I love that they support local. They are in great locations and the staff are sooooo helpful! Great selection of quality clothes and accessories. And for doing things like this!

Dress: Patti Shirtdress- Mandala Design, $178; Bracelet: Leather Bracelet, BurfurtART, $58; Necklace: BurfurtART, $34; Shoes: April – Miz Mooz, $125

What do you have that you want to promote?  As an entrepreneur, I find it hard to have real connections with other business people. All of the networking events seem the same. Financial advisors, Multi Level Marketing reps, people only attending to get business or free food and drinks. They never attend to connect; to make actual, real connections. A colleague and I decided to start a Meetup group for those reasons. It’s called ‘Women Behind the Business”. If you are an entrepreneur who wants to replace your current board of directors (children, pets, family members) with people who are walking in your shoes, if you want to learn from the collective experiences and knowledge of this group, and show genuine support and respect for bold women like yourself, then this group is for you. Similar to a Mastermind group, we will be bringing people together with different experiences and ideas to collaborate, brainstorm, and provide support to help the participants overcome obstacles. For business owners Masterminding can help you model other successful entrepreneurs, make you accountable for achieving your goals, and provide you with your own personal experienced advisory group. Our meetups will be informational and focused yet lighthearted and fun.   First Meetup – April 21st

Is there anything else we should know about you? I genuinely love being an entrepreneur and helping other entrepreneurs. I love going for coffee and brainstorming business ideas. I love seeing those ideas come to fruition. And wait….did I mention I love bacon?

Where can people find you on social media? EVERYWHERE!!!

Style Profile – Emilia Farrace

In this edition of our Style Profile series, we feature Emilia, a creative professional and CEO of a creative agency. Here she shares her love of life, her glowing personality and some daring looks for business and play!

Name: Emilia Farrace
Occupation: Founder + Creative Director at Simply Elaborate Creative Agency
Age: 29
Lifestyle: On the go, with a full schedule, iPhone in one hand, coffee in the
other, and a smile on – always.

2014-03-14 12.41.57

Dress: Hourglass dress – Obakki $280.00
Bag: Malone – Matt & Nat $130.00
Ring: Curious Oddities $25.00
Shoes: Black Lonna T-bar – Hush Puppies $100.00

Emilia runs her own creative agency, and this dress is perfect for landing that big new client. With the clean but bold lines, it’s very sophisticated and grown up, and in it she presents the image of a very confident and powerful woman who can get results for her clients. Because Emilia is young, and looks radiant and youthful, she may find some people don’t take her seriously as a business woman. This dress erases any doubt that she is the one for the job, and that she can get the work done! The colour blocking plays up and flatters her curves, but the high neckline and below knee length is all business.

What’s a typical day like for you?
Not typical! Rarely do I have two days that are the same, but that’s where the fun is! I’m always meeting people: potential, current and old clients, friends, family and usually it’s all over Toronto and the GTA – so I need to be in clothes that are comfortable and versatile.

What in your life is really important to you?
It’s really important for me to maintain a balance in my life of personal and professional activities. My family and friends will always be number one, and it’s really important to me to cultivate and strengthen those bonds constantly. Also, working with Scribble Me Silly, art for kids, is very important as I feel it’s a great opportunity to allow those that are transitioning into teenagers, and then young adults feel empowered and strong in their lives.

Dress: Linen Shirt Dress – Atelier B $164.00
Shoes: Rose Lonna T-bar – Hush Puppies $100.00

This is a great piece for Emilia’s wardrobe because of its versatility. It can be worn in cooler weather with tights and a sweater or blazer, and in the summer it’s a no fuss stand alone piece. The fitted waist and flared skirt accentuates Emilia’s body and complements her curves beautifully. On its own, it’s casual and fun. With accessories, she can change the look from business to flirty, and everything in between. Atelier B makes great minimalist pieces that fit beautifully and are a blank canvas for your self-expression.

What would you like to be remembered for?
I really feel strongly about helping other people share their voice with the world. I love helping others in all aspects of my life and would love to be known for being there for them in need, and when just having a ball.

What role does fashion play in your life?
I love having fashionable, and classic items as part of my wardrobe. I spend more time paying attention to business growth so when I find something that fits, looks good and makes me feel good – it needs to last.

Dress: Marjorie – Melow $184.00
Bracelet: Rock Candy – BurfurtART $45.00
Shoes: Tan Lonna T-bar – Hush Puppies $100.00

Obviously this colour is just stunning on Emilia’s skin tone. She just radiates! Bold colours say “I’m confident!” and the shape and drape of this dress allow you to really feel poised. With the double layer of fabric, and the drape created by the wrap, there is plenty to hide anything you may not want to show in the tummy area. The lines created by the wrap create a strong hourglass shape. The fabric also has a fantastic swing to it when you walk and is soft and comfortable to wear. The tan shoes are a great neutral to complete the look, and complement the orange dress and the brown and golden tones of Emilia’s hair and skin.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?
I love that the clothes feel like they’re made for my body. Everyone who I’ve ever dealt with at FC is always willing to help and find the clothes for me to try on – because they know my style just by the clothes I walk in wearing. They always dead-on with their choices.

What do you have that you want to promote?
I founded Simply Elaborate Creative Agency that specializes in helping small to medium sized businesses develop their brands, design and develop their websites, and we also take care of social media content creation! We love partnering with our clients to create customizable and easy-to-use websites.

Is there anything else we should know about you?
I just started learning how to knit! Although, I’m not very good at closing infinity scarves, I definitely love seeing the scarf get longer!!

Style Profile – Brandy King

For this Style Profile, we went to Brandy’s favourite restaurant near our Queen Street store, Sud Forno to show off some great pieces from our spring collections. Whenever Brandy makes a trip into Toronto from Cambridge, the two musts on her list are Fresh Collective and Sud Forno! It’s obvious this photographer has great taste and the gorgeous restaurant proved to be the perfect backdrop for Brandy’s naturally beautiful style.

Name: Brandy King
Occupation: Photographer, Business Owner
Age: 32

Marjorie dress by Melow par Melissa Bolduc.  $184.
Floral Trave Sling Shoes by Hush Puppies, $80.
Dyed Howlite necklace by Curious Oddites.  $55.

I chose this outfit for Brandy with her lifestyle in mind.  Brandy’s always on the go, and this comfortable yet polished dress is just the thing to get her through a summer day.  She can get up and go (in comfortable flats!), do a bit of editing then head out to meet a client.Next would be some errands and a lunch date with her hubby, and then some more meetings. She could even go straight to a dinner out with the girls or with her in-laws, looking fantastic from morning to night.

This dress is flattering for any figure with the draping caused by the wrap.  It accentuates an hourglass shape and falls gently over tummy and hips.  Best of all, with the layers of fabric, it doesn’t reveal every little detail of what’s underneath.

What’s a typical day like for you?

My days are filled with as much inspiration as I can pack into them.

I start most days with exercise and a good breakfast and then I’m off to the races. If I’m not shooting photographs, I’m editing them, meeting with clients, working on my website or other promotional material to help share my art with the community.

It’s also important to me to spend quality time with my supportive (and dare I say handsome) husband, amazing friends and wonderful family.

What in your life is really important to you?

Doing what I love and making beautiful things. It seems simple but sometimes, making time for what you love can be the hardest thing you ever do. It’s worth it.

Also, it’s important to be myself and be happy, as often as I can be.

brandy amy dress-bkgrdedit

Amy Dress by Michelle Carey.  $198.
Rose Lonna T-Bar Shoes by Hush Puppies. $100.
Soutache Necklace by Victoria Sorkin. $85.

This playful dress is a perfectly fun look for Brandy.  The fitted empire waist and full skirt compliment her curves and show off her tiny waist.  The dots suit her joyful and creative personality, and we chose rose coloured shoes and a matching necklace to add an extra touch of femininity.

This is a great dress for lot of occasions and can be styled in many ways to get various looks.  Brandy can try a light belted cardigan over top to make it slightly more serious, tights, boots and a blazer for cooler weather, and a red belt and red shoes for a nautical feel.  When a dress looks this great, you want to find a lot of excuses to wear it!

What would you like to be remembered for?

If I am to be remembered, I’d like it to be for inspiring people to do what they love and for loving without condition.

What role does fashion play in your life?

Fashion plays two MAJOR roles for me.

It’s the art I live my life in. It gives me confidence as a business owner and a woman, to go out in the world everyday and engage people about my
own art.
It’s the paint on my canvas (so to speak). My specialty is photographing people, so what they wear is a huge part of the final image. I try to help coach my clients on what will work well for the final image we are trying to create.

Fresh Collective stands behind the unique product they sell. I love that they support local designers and that you know the pieces you leave with will last for years. The service is also outstanding.

Brandy outdoor

Melina Jacket by Melow par Melissa Bolduc.  $160.00
High Rise Skinny Yoga Jeans.  $120.00
Rose Lonna T-Bar Shoes by Hush Puppies.  $100.00
Peach Malone Bag by Matt & Nat.  $130.00
Ring by Curious Oddities.  $25.00
Hand printed and dyed Scarf by Katie Walker.  $40.00

As a creative professional, it’s important for Brandy to show up to see clients looking polished and, well, fabulous.  As a photographer, her clients are trusting her visual judgement so presenting herself well put together is a great opportunity to show her taste and sense of colour, scale and shape. This unique jacket is perfect for Brandy with it’s simple styling, asymmetrical shape and easy style.  It’s trim and polished, and oh so stylish.  The asymmetry is flattering to almost any woman’s body as diagonal lines play up length and an hourglass shape.

The Yoga Jeans Brandy’s wearing look oh-so- casual and ever-so-stylish.  They also allow total freedom of movement and comfort which is essential for Brandy’s busy life.  The hand printed scarf adds an artistic flair and the pink shoes and purse add a playful and feminine touch.
