What’s a typical day like for you?

I don’t feel like I have a typical day; it is usually dictated by my clients. Beginning of the month is usually busy due to month ends and then towards the middle and end of the month I tend to have more time to work on my business and sales calls. Payroll weeks also tend to be much busier than non payroll weeks. Although I try to keep a fairly regular schedule, it’s never a dull moment working in finance and I tend to be busier than I anticipate!

What in your life is really important to you?

My family and friends are the most important part of my life. They are the ones that encouraged me to go out on my own and start my own business. Their never ending support is what allows me to keep going despite any challenges I face.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I would love for clients to view my work with them as a positive and easy experience, especially when numbers can be the most stressful part of running a business for many entrepreneurs.

What role does fashion play in your life?

I love to wear outfits that portray my personality and professionalism, all while feeling comfortable.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

I like how you can leave the store with so many unique finds, as opposed to typical trends you’d find elsewhere.  I also like the idea of supporting local designers and businesses!

Occupation: Florist, owner of Periwinkle Flowers
Age: 40
Lifestyle: Colourful, joyful, creative.

SAMSUNG CSC

Dress: Annie 50; Necklace: Love, Montreal.

This dress is available online in red, green and black!

What’s a typical day like for you? My days are all over the place. Mostly
I am working, which can mean getting up early to buy flowers at the
wholesale market, or manning my flower shop helping customers and making
flower designs.  Some days I am out delivering and setting up flowers for
events such as weddings. Days off are rare right now but I try to fill
them with bike rides and hanging with my family rather than wasting them
on housework!

What in your life is really important to you? Being happy.  I truly think
happiness is a choice we each get to make from moment to moment. We only
get to live once, so I want to make this life a happy one.

Shop for this sweater here and for Yoga Jeans here.

What would you like to be remembered for? My patience and acceptance of
others. And also for being a pretty darn good florist.

What role does fashion play in your life? I am obsessed with colour and
pattern, nothing makes me happier than dressing in bright colours and
prints.  I think life is too short not to wear pretty clothes.  For my
work I am often getting dirty and do a lot of lifting and moving, so my
clothes need to be durable and able to take a beating while still looking
good enough to meet with a client at a moments notice, which is a lot to
ask.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? It’s like Fresh Collective has hooked itself to my brain! I love the eclectic mix of styles, but even more I love that the staff are such a cool creative bunch themselves that they can take in who I am and choose clothes that will show that to the world- it is a true gift.  I’m also trying to be conscious of where I spend my money.  As a small business owner myself, I think it is important to support other small local businesses and makers so that we can all prosper and succeed.

What do you have that you want to promote? I own a flower shop called
Periwinkle Flowers in midtown Toronto.  It’s filled with colour and happy
things, and I get to share my love of flowers with people across the city.
The shop makes and delivers happy colourful flower arrangements across
Toronto, and also carries pretty little things such as soaps and tea
towels made by local designers.  I have a special offer for Fresh Collective fans!  See the details below:

Is there anything else we should know about you? I’ve owned my shop for 14
years, and have come to realize I truly love being a florist!  Hearing
little slices of a customer’s story as I help them pick out flowers for a
friend or loved one is just hands down the best part of my work.

Top 3 tips for indie fashion designers in Canada

Jane' new art

In my role as Product Coordinator at Fresh Collective, I feel privileged to work with up to 50 designers each year.  These designers are all entrepreneurs as well which is key to making it as a designer.  Essentially, they are each running a small manufacturing business. They develop, test and tweak their products, then manage production, sales, marketing and bookkeeping.

It takes a lot to juggle all these jobs successfully and keep putting out fresh products each season.  Here are my top 3 tips for succeeding in launching your own line:

1. Research:  Find out as much as you can by browsing stores, meeting people and looking at other products out there that would be your competition.  Go all over the city, store to store. Learn about the boutiques. Find ones you love. Talk to the people working there and see if you can see your line fitting it. Look at the garments and jewellery; examine how they are constructed, look the price. How is your product going to stand out? How will you produce items that will sell at a marketable price?  Will your line play a nice complement to the other lines and help them sell?   Then research potential customers- your friends and family is a good place to start! Show people your samples and ask their opinions of them. Knowledge is power!

supporting local designers

2. Get started selling: Do craft shows, special sales and events. Get your product in front of real people. Test it out on the market. Find out who your customer is and what they love. Back in the day, I also had my own clothing line and Jennifer Fukushima and I used to share a booth at the Clothing Show once in a while. Meet other designers and come up with ways to collaborate on a space at a craft show if you have to. This way when you show your line to retailers you can tell them what your best sellers are. (Hint: That’s the first question I always ask when I meet a new designer!)

3. Start small. Design 2 to 5 key pieces and perfect them.  Many designers spread themselves too thin thinking that they need to produce a full collection.  What happens too often is they drain their money and time and miss the season. And then they repeat the mistake the next season.   What works is building a repertoire of core pieces that sell well and that you can create variations on.  A fabulously fitting dress can be done in many fabrics, with short sleeves or long, and can make your whole career.  Simple and easy reproduction of a best selling piece will be your money maker.

I’m very proud of the work we do at Fresh Collective to partner with designers to grow our business along with theirs.  I feel a particular sense of pride when a new designer starts with us and we get to watch their progress as they work hard, innovate, take feedback and work some more to start really seeing some success.  It feels awesome to send a  sales report with a little note like, “You better get to work!  We’re almost sold out of your dresses!”

Are you an emerging or established Canadian designer interested in selling with us?  Please get in touch and tell us about your line!

I love Peggy Nash!  I’m very interested in women in leadership roles, and the first time I met Peggy in our shop, I was so impressed with how lovely she is in person and her commitment to shopping local and supporting local businesses. She is stylish, elegant and always looks comfortable and relatable.  She’s been a regular customer of ours for years and I’m proud that we outfit one of our leaders.

What’s a typical day like for you? Up by 6am, read the news, go for a run, quickly get ready and then usually in first meeting at 8am. In Ottawa there is a core schedule of committee meetings, House Duty, Question Period, then other events and meetings are slotted in between.  In Toronto, I try to get to as many community meetings, events and activities possible, while also meeting with constituents at my office.  Every day is different. I commute between the two cities every week when the House is sitting. Continue reading

Style Profile – Brandy King

For this Style Profile, we went to Brandy’s favourite restaurant near our Queen Street store, Sud Forno to show off some great pieces from our spring collections. Whenever Brandy makes a trip into Toronto from Cambridge, the two musts on her list are Fresh Collective and Sud Forno! It’s obvious this photographer has great taste and the gorgeous restaurant proved to be the perfect backdrop for Brandy’s naturally beautiful style.

Name: Brandy King
Occupation: Photographer, Business Owner
Age: 32

PhotoGrid_1394300341286

Marjorie dress by Melow par Melissa Bolduc.  $184.
Floral Trave Sling Shoes by Hush Puppies, $80.
Dyed Howlite necklace by Curious Oddites.  $55.

I chose this outfit for Brandy with her lifestyle in mind.  Brandy’s always on the go, and this comfortable yet polished dress is just the thing to get her through a summer day.  She can get up and go (in comfortable flats!), do a bit of editing then head out to meet a client.Next would be some errands and a lunch date with her hubby, and then some more meetings. She could even go straight to a dinner out with the girls or with her in-laws, looking fantastic from morning to night.

This dress is flattering for any figure with the draping caused by the wrap.  It accentuates an hourglass shape and falls gently over tummy and hips.  Best of all, with the layers of fabric, it doesn’t reveal every little detail of what’s underneath.

What’s a typical day like for you?

My days are filled with as much inspiration as I can pack into them.

I start most days with exercise and a good breakfast and then I’m off to the races. If I’m not shooting photographs, I’m editing them, meeting with clients, working on my website or other promotional material to help share my art with the community.

It’s also important to me to spend quality time with my supportive (and dare I say handsome) husband, amazing friends and wonderful family.

What in your life is really important to you?

Doing what I love and making beautiful things. It seems simple but sometimes, making time for what you love can be the hardest thing you ever do. It’s worth it.

Also, it’s important to be myself and be happy, as often as I can be.

brandy amy dress-bkgrdedit

Amy Dress by Michelle Carey.  $198.
Rose Lonna T-Bar Shoes by Hush Puppies. $100.
Soutache Necklace by Victoria Sorkin. $85.

This playful dress is a perfectly fun look for Brandy.  The fitted empire waist and full skirt compliment her curves and show off her tiny waist.  The dots suit her joyful and creative personality, and we chose rose coloured shoes and a matching necklace to add an extra touch of femininity.

This is a great dress for lot of occasions and can be styled in many ways to get various looks.  Brandy can try a light belted cardigan over top to make it slightly more serious, tights, boots and a blazer for cooler weather, and a red belt and red shoes for a nautical feel.  When a dress looks this great, you want to find a lot of excuses to wear it!

What would you like to be remembered for?

If I am to be remembered, I’d like it to be for inspiring people to do what they love and for loving without condition.

What role does fashion play in your life?

Fashion plays two MAJOR roles for me.

It’s the art I live my life in. It gives me confidence as a business owner and a woman, to go out in the world everyday and engage people about my
own art.
It’s the paint on my canvas (so to speak). My specialty is photographing people, so what they wear is a huge part of the final image. I try to help coach my clients on what will work well for the final image we are trying to create.

Fresh Collective stands behind the unique product they sell. I love that they support local designers and that you know the pieces you leave with will last for years. The service is also outstanding.

Peach Malone Bag by Matt & Nat.  $130.00
Ring by Curious Oddities.  $25.00
Hand printed and dyed Scarf by Katie Walker.  $40.00

As a creative professional, it’s important for Brandy to show up to see clients looking polished and, well, fabulous.  As a photographer, her clients are trusting her visual judgement so presenting herself well put together is a great opportunity to show her taste and sense of colour, scale and shape. This unique jacket is perfect for Brandy with it’s simple styling, asymmetrical shape and easy style.  It’s trim and polished, and oh so stylish.  The asymmetry is flattering to almost any woman’s body as diagonal lines play up length and an hourglass shape.

The Yoga Jeans Brandy’s wearing look oh-so- casual and ever-so-stylish.  They also allow total freedom of movement and comfort which is essential for Brandy’s busy life.  The hand printed scarf adds an artistic flair and the pink shoes and purse add a playful and feminine touch.

What do you have that you want to promote?

Style Profile – Jenna Cloughley

In our eighth style profile series, we feature Jenna Cloughley, the Marketing Director and Product Partner Coordinator at Fresh Collective. Read on as she shares about her life, her thoughts on fashion, and what she does after hours.

“Jenna Cloughley is our Marketing Director and Product Partner Coordinator and what that means is she creates a lot of magic around Fresh Collective!  She finds new designers to partner with us, creates exciting events and marketing campaigns and curates the initial collections that enter our stores.  Jenna is a fearless leader, thinks big and a she’s a lot of fun to boot!  I’m thrilled that she has been on our team for more than a year now, and know we have many happy years ahead creating and shaping this company with Jenna as part of our team.”

What’s a typical day like for you? None of my days are typical. If I’m not meeting with new designers, I’m organizing media opportunities or special partnerships for Fresh Collective, following up on emails and reviewing our social media conversations. I’m at fashion shows, networking events, or budget meetings. In the evenings, my schedule has some continuity. Sunday/Monday/Tuesday nights I can be found on my roller skates at the Bunker (home of Toronto Roller Derby) teaching our fresh meat or skating with CN Power, the Toronto All Star Team. Thursdays is a catch up on work night, and Friday/Saturday is date night with my hunky boyfriend.

What in your life is really important to you? My babe-a-licious boyfriend, my friends, my family and my teammates – at FC and in roller derby.

What would you like to be remembered for? I would like to be remembered for making a difference, and for being a stand for women around the world to find their power, create lives they love and become who they want to be!

What role does fashion play in your life? Fashion is my life! I spend my mornings on the TTC secretly looking at what women are wearing. Are they a FC customer? Do I think they would like the line I just looked at yesterday? Right now, I’m analyzing women’s winter boots. I find women in Toronto wear either a fashion boot (a stylish boot) or, they have on real, hard core winter boots with fluff out the top, like NO sign of winter is going to get into those boots. LOL. Looking at what they’re wearing and how they’re wearing it helps me to get clear about what kind of product we should be carrying at Fresh Collective.

They make quality pieces that build wardrobes. I am so lucky to be surrounded by all of this talent and have the wondrous fortune that these creative people trust me to help them reach the next level. I am inspired and honoured by this trust!

What do you have that you want to promote? I want to promote that we at Fresh Collective are always on the lookout for new, hot Canadian designers. If you are a Canadian designer and would like to have your line carried at Fresh Collective, please go to this link and complete our designer application. And of course I want to promote my love for Toronto Roller Derby. My team, CN Power will be playing March 22/23 in a huge tournament hosted right here in Toronto. Is there anything else we should know about you? I have a mean knock out and draw back (come see roller derby if you want to know what that means!).

What’s a typical day like for you?
A typical day looks like working at Fresh Collective all day from 11-7pm.  From there I either go out and work on my other business hosting parties, going to meetings or meeting with people for a drink. Three nights a week I also go Bouldering after work. It’s kind of like rock climbing but there are no ropes!
What in your life is really important to you?
Balance is very important to  me. I love to be busy doing things I love but I also don’t like to be controlled by my schedule. Scheduling my life so that it works for me is very important to staying positive and happy even when things don’t work out the way I planned.

In the last two years I have really  embraced that I am a Fashion Professional. Style and fashion is my career and I love that I get to embrace self-expression through fashion every day. In other words, it plays a VITAL role in my daily life and my identity.
