Robe Bolero by Montreal fashion label Cherry Bobin available online here.

Reversible Sydney Necklace by Toronto Jewellery design label Foxy Originals available here.

What’s a typical day like for you?

I work a typical 9-to-5 job but I can be found doing one of the many diverse things that interest me after hours. Weekly I volunteer as an English tutor for refugees and on other days I’m covering a media event for Torontonicity or I’m doing fun activities such as snowshoeing with friends or checking out museums with my boyfriend. On the weekend, you’ll often find me trying out a new recipe as part of my 1000 new recipe challenge and then sharing the (mostly) delicious results with my family, who are always willing to be my guinea pigs. My weekends are pretty booked with theatre, movies, concerts, hiking, dining and checking out festivals and new things to do in Toronto.

This Ori dress by Toronto fashion label Studio Fresh is available in 2 options: floral with striped sleeves as above and solid black with teal sleeves.

What in your life is really important to you?

My family is most important and so is the freedom to do what I want to do. We have so many opportunities available to us in Toronto and it is impossible to advantage of them all, but I try.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I hope people remember me as a kind, caring person who sweetens their day. I would also like to be remembered for having a cat hotel – I don’t have one but it would be awesome if I did!

What role does fashion play in your life?

I love playing with fashion, it is self-expression that I carry with me everywhere. It is an artistic outlet for me. Deciding how to combine clothes in the morning is a creative way to start the day. Sometimes, I come up with a new combination and that’s exciting – it is like a new outfit suddenly appeared in my closet. Even if I’m feeling blah, I feel better when I put on some stylish and colourful clothes.

This dress is called Boxy II made by Toronto label Studio Fresh.  It comes in another variation as well here: Boxy Patch.  The shoes are called Etta by Miz Mooz and are currently ON SALE!

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

Fresh Collective always has a few pieces that will add flavor to my wardrobe, whether I’m looking for something totally fresh or if I need something to work with what I have. The clothes are comfortable which is so important to my active lifestyle.

What do you have that you want to promote?

I’m a blogger for which is a natural thing for me to do because I’m always zooming around the city checking out art galleries, theatre, Paint Nite, Murder Mystery Scavenger Hunts and trying out new kind of exercise classes such as Kangoo – which is similar to jumping around the room like a kangaroo in specially-made bouncy shoes.

Is there anything else we should know about you?

I have a passion for indie and local. I love local, independent theatre such as Fringe and SummerWorks, I savour indie coffee shops and I relish shopping for clothes and jewelry created by local designers from fab shops such as Fresh Collective.

Get the Look for Fall: Tunic and Leggings

new get the look

Why this look rocks:  Comfort and easy style!  So easy to throw on, and easy to accessorize. Having a few tunics and a couple pairs of leggings will make every morning easier as you get into action!

The leggings: Fresh Collective is carrying SPANX Essential leggings and we’re in LOVE with them.  A wide flat panel at the waist holds everything in firmly, and doesn’t dig in to create another line under your top like some other leggings do. The brushed jersey fabric looks great and is comfy all day long.  Order here: SPANX leggings or come into our shops to try them on!

How to accessorize:  Mix up the look with long necklaces, scarves, flats, mid-heels, boots and belts.  Tunics and leggings are very versatile and can be a Sunday brunch look or a fancy out for dinner look.

The tunics: Local Toronto label Desserts and Skirts has been producing best selling tunics for years!  This season, designer Nicole Boudreau has hit a home run with these four gorgeous designs.  Pick up one, or collect them all!  Available in store or online.

Four tunics

Buy them here: Far left (sorry, not available online at this time), second, third, fourth.

All four tunics are available in all locations of Fresh Collective.

The models: The four lovely women above are participating in our 30 Days of Style Profiles.  At Fresh Collective we like to feature women from the community in our clothes to show a variety of “models” that our customers can really relate to.  We hear time and again that our customer really love this type of marketing as it helps them better envisions what they would look like in the outfits as opposed to seeing clothing only on professional models.  Aside from looking AWESOME in our outfits, we want you to feel confident and powerful to get important things done in your life, whether that’s being an amazing mom, running your business, teaching the leaders of tomorrow or all of the above!  That’s why we like to profile what the women of the Style Profile are up to and what they’re passionate about.  Check out more on these four fabulous ladies here:  Joanna, Kara, Rebecca, and Susanna.

Sweater: Desserts and Skirts Tunic $110; Pants: Essential Leggings- SPANX, $99; Scarf: Black and White Infinity scarf, $35

What’s a typical day like for you? Teaching, student appointments, planning meetings, (when I can fit them in) — walking around the city, writing, hot yoga.

What would you like to be remembered for?  Helping people see the world in a new way.

What role does fashion play in your life? Fashion is fun as a spectator sport, but it is also one item in my professional tool box  I love to give the impression that I put that extra bit of effort into the way I look: it’s a way of standing out but also showing respect —  for my students, my co-workers, and my profession.

What do you have that you want to promote?  My blog Teacherpants –it’s a very personal exploration of the experience of teaching.  I’m not a big educational theory person:  I’m trying to get at how teaching feels as an emotional, even physical, experience. My goal is to write posts that have relevance beyond the classroom, so you don’t have to be a teacher to relate.

Style Profile: Rebecca Earl

Name: Rebecca Earl
Occupation: Sleep Consultant, The Sugar Plum Sleep Co.
Age: 37
Lifestyle: Organized chaos

Top: Genesis top – KLATT, $100; Pants: High Rise Skinny Jeans- Yoga Jeans, $130; Bag: Jeane and Jax $90

What’s a typical day like for you? I like to wake up before my boys (ages 6 and 4) to catch a few minutes to myself and prepare for the day ahead. I walk my boys to school and then spend my mornings getting tasks completed around the house and hitting the gym. My boys come home for lunch and after I walk them back to school I spend my afternoons focusing on my clients, marketing, business planning and networking. After school you can find us at the park burning off some energy before supper. Lately, we’ve logging some serious time with Lego and board games in the evening to help the boys get ready for bed. Once they are asleep,  most evenings involve catching up on e-mail, a cup of tea,  spending some time with my husband and an early bedtime. Ok, so maybe there is some Netflix in there too…..not every night though, I swear!

What in your life is really important to you? Right now I’m focusing a lot of time and energy on achieving patience and grace throughout my day. In order to do that I’ve made exercise, sleep and healthy eating priorities. I’m a way nicer person and a much better mom when I look after myself.

Tunic: Dania Tunic – Desserts and Skirts, $125; Pants: Essential Leggings- SPANX, $99; Boots: Bloom Boot – Miz Mooz, $295; Necklace: Colleen Poitras $75; Bag: Jeane and Jax $45

What would you like to be remembered for? I’m extremely fortunate to have been invited into the lives of hundreds of families through The Sugar Plum Sleep Co.  I absolutely love helping families achieve better sleep and my hope is that they remember me as knowledgable, compassionate, and encouraging.

(Above) Rebecca Earl talks about what she’s passionate about:  Helping families get better sleep with her company Sugar Plum Sleep Co.

What role does fashion play in your life? I wear a lot of different hats during the day so my clothing needs to work hard by being comfortable and able to transition from one place to another. I’m also a big fan of colour and like to wear pieces that have some energy and personality.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? I love supporting small Canadian business and Fresh Collective does an amazing job of showcasing talented local designers. The staff are also great at helping you find exactly what you need.

What do you have that you want to promote? My goal is to improve the quality of sleep for the entire family, so I’m excited to announce that this Fall I’ll be launching Sleep School for adults. The program is designed to help individuals make realistic and lasting changes to their sleep habits. The program includes a detailed  a detailed sleep guide for adults with weekly challenges; participation in a private Facebook support group; access to a private sleep tracking tool;  individual follow up support of progress; and a bedtime essentials sleep kit that includes my favourite items to support a restful night’s sleep. Sign up for my newsletter to be the first to know when this program launches.

Is there anything else we should know about you? I have a serious sweet tooth (chocolate covered almonds make everything better); I’m an only child (most likely because I never slept through the night until I was 2); and I always dance like no one is watching.

Style Profile – Rashelle

Name: Rashelle
Occupation: Freelance Multimedia Artist
Age: I know how to act like an adult…I think?
Lifestyle: I would probably have to say my lifestyle is fairly free spirited and spontaneous!

Dress: Patti – Mandala Design, $178; Shoes: Joni heel – Miz Mooz, $136 (regularly $170)

What’s a typical day like for you? There is no typical day! One day I could be tattooing works of art on skin, another I could be working on a commissioned oil painting on canvas, the next doing make-up and hair styling for a Scottish-Jewish-Gay wedding! Or, perhaps a day off at The Beach? Who knows!

What in your life is really important to you? I know it’s cliche’d, but my friends and family. They support me and encourage me. They keep me going and make it all worth it. Also my two fantastic cats, Ralph & Paul.Freedom. Pizza. Cooking in general actually, but definitely pizza. Even better, freedom pizza.

…and of course, the ability to create art!

Dress: Lexi – Mandala Design $148, Shoes: Joni Heel – Miz Mooz, $136 (regular price $170)

What would you like to be remembered for? Ever since I was a child, I wanted to be a famous artist like Picasso or Dali (both favourites and super inspirational to me) where they were able to be recognized for their talents *within* their lifetime and thereafter. I wanted to be just like them, building a career out of their passion. It would be pretty amazing to be remembered for my art once I’m gone.

What role does fashion play in your life? Fashion has always been a part of who I am. Throughout the years I have enjoyed being a sort of chameleon with all the different styles, expressing my moods through clothing/hair/makeup from day to day.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? I love the unique array of styles, colours, the friendly service and don’t forget they support independent local designers!

Top: Yasmine Louis, $65; Jeans: Yoga Jeans- Second Denim Co., $120: Bracelet Colleen Poitras; Shoes: Joni Heel- Miz Mooz, $136 (regular price $170)

What do you have that you want to promote?
Inspired by scenes from the cult classic film, The Shining, I have created 7 multimedia works of art. All pieces are done on an old Ikea desk or dresser panel – reused and repurposed using oil & acrylic paints, Col-erase pencils, graphite, pyrography (wood burning), carving/sanding (rotary/Dremel), collage, and more!

It was a four month project with countless hours of work involved.

6 out of 7 pieces are still on display at Cardinal Rule restaurant at 5 Roncesvalles Ave until the end of June.

“Ebony Goddess” – Oil paints and varnish on an old 5 foot Ikea desk top.

“Jack” Pyrography, collage, Col-Erase pencil, oil paint, stucco gel and varnish on an old Ikea desk panel.

“Dick Holloran – The Cook” – Pyrography stipple, Col-Erase pencil, graphite, acrylic paints and varnish on an old Ikea desk panel. (CLOSE UP)

“Danny Torrance” – Pyrography, oil paints, carving/sanding(Dremel/rotary tool), acrylic paints, marker and varnish on an old Ikea desk panel.

Prints as well as the original pieces are available for purchase in my Etsy shop:

Is there anything else we should know about you? I also have been doing quality custom tattoos in all styles for the past ten years under the name Squid Inx Tattoos. I work out of a private, by appointment only studio – you can book and view photo galleries by visiting

What do you have that you want to promote?  Well, of course I want to promote the three pieces I’m wearing in these pictures.  These have been developed through the #FCfreshstrart program in which I started with a blank sketchbook and a curious mind.  I interviewed customers and did surveys to find out what customers would really want to buy, and I came up with these three garments.  I’m working on producing them for sale now, and I’m so excited to see how the public receives them!

As well, eek! My latest sewing projects have been bow ties. I am a fanatic! I love them, I love creating them, I love sewing them! I just made 25 bow ties for a serving crew for an event and also some wedding parties. 🙂 Getting hitched? Going to an event? Gift idea? I’m your girl!

What’s a typical day like for you? There is no typical day anymore- every day is different!  I never know what challenge will come along that day on top of the things that I have to do already.

Where to start… there is always lot of sewing, cutting, finishing and packaging. You can never ignore the creative process that lights up like fire without the matches and you have to act on it no matter what…. it can be very distracting!

On an ongoing basis, I am maintaining Monikova’s online store and making sure my retailers have the product they need.  Photo shoots are important for new product – this is non-stop!  I also spend time searching for good materials,  figuring out my new steps for Pop-Up stores that I’ve been doing this year to promote my label and to find out what works and what doesn’t …. I can just carry on! Quite simply there is never dull moment!
