The Swagger Coach: JEWELLERY JAM

swagger coach

I spend far more money on jewellery than on shoes. Far more. Simply put, the jewellery which surrounds me daily is hand-crafted by the lovely folks I love and work with, plus is far more affordable than a new pair of wedge heels, double plus will likely leave my feet feeling better at the end of the day. So this week, I wanted to shine the spotlight on some of our most on-trend items and give kudos and shout-outs to the folks who made them with love. Oh, and FYI, the top that I’m wearing in ALL of these pics is one of my new favourite arrivals in-store! This is the Kyle top by Melow par Melissa Bolduc. Its actually TWO one-shouldered tops which can be worn a variety of different ways to take you from casual to athletic to flirty! I’m wearing it in black (to let the jewellery shine, of course!) but we also have it in emerald green, navy blue, and black and white jailhouse stripes!

1) SPRINGTIME BRIGHTS

Dreary winter days are gone, girls, and so should be your neutral winter accessories. With a season so full of colour, one simply can’t help but to totally bathe themselves in lush colours and bold shapes. Spring fashion is coming in like a lion with vivid colours, glossy finishes and a strong nod to mod themes. Splashing up your wardrobe with vivid accessories can be a great way for colour-shy girls to dip a toe into the fashion pool, or can be a way to take your notice-me dress to a whole new level of awesomeness. (Psst, that white oxford shirt in your closet is screaming for some of these, as you read this. Just so you know.)

2) BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

The advantage of springtime is the lack of necessity in bulking up with layers of heavy fabrics and stiff textures. We start to see chiffon, linen, goslin and light cotton weaves making their much-welcomed comeback, and we crave the warm breeze of a calm summer’s day. Hey, soul sister, its time to appreciate the art in the world around us, and that spills right over into the jewellery you choose to adorn yourself with. Get in touch with your artsy earthy side this summer with some of these! Pair these with flowwy skirts, tunic tops and your very favourite denim jeans.

3) PUT A BIRD ON IT
Birds have claimed their place in the hearts of fashionistas everywhere. Symbolic of freedom and peace, birds have been ruffling some feathers (see what I did there?) lately, and we’ve got the most adorable accessories to compliment your springtime wardrobe… no chirping included! If realism is your thing, we’ve got you covered there too, but my very favourite of the birdy jewellery is cartoon-inspired, charming and playful. Wear these with a cute summer dress with a matching cardigan, a bright blouse or a co-ordinating purse!
Hand-inked jay bird studs earrings and hairpins from Odd Bird. Printed on tiny slices of fallen branches, these colourful jays are retro-licious and just a tiny pop of cheekiness. Earrings on coated brass backings, hairpins on brass crimped pins.

4) PRIM AND PROPER
Maybe it’s the release of the Great Gatsby (I <3 Baz Luhrmann). Maybe it’s the general “in-ness”  of retro-current fashion, or maybe folks are simply falling in love with romantic side of feminine jewellery. Sweet, ladylike accessories are IN, in a big way. This generation’s take on the prim styles feature more volume, whimsical details and unexpected splashes of colour. Paired with lace and chiffon, clean ivories or petal pinks, these feminine pieces will make you feel like YOU’RE the only girl in the world!

5) PINUP PERFECTION
What’s more fun than circle skirts and adorable kitten heels? Vamping up like their bad-girl counterparts and getting in touch with your retro-rockabilly rockstar side! Polks dots, bold florals and juicy cherries are always a sure sign of fabulous weather, and this spring will be no exception. Hollywood’s hottest IT girls are rocking blatantly 50s style digs, and style queens like Zooey Deschanel, Gwen Stefani, Christina Hendricks and Dita Von Teese are all fans of the throwback styles. Get girly with us!

What to Wear Wednesday – Beauty in Black

What to Wear Wednesday - Beauty in Black

What to Wear Wednesday – Beauty in Black by freshcollective

Black. I could write a love story, a poem, a ballad about my love of black. Don’t we all? It’s slimming, it’s sleek, it’s classic, it’s always appropriate. I’m wearing all black today (with the exception of some fun red boots) and feel confident and stylish, and so I decided today’s WTWW would pay homage to the queen of shades!

Top: Studio Fresh – Okay, so this isn’t all black, but I love the structure, the interesting contrast of fabric and texture, and I’m a sucker for anything involving lace…

Jeans: Yoga Jeans – by now you know these are the best jeans around. I love them in the slimming, flattering “sky-rise” cut. No more muffin top!

Boots: Hush Puppies – These Moorland boots are cozy, comfy and weatherproof! With a peek-a-boo grey plaid lining, they’re a great all purpose black boot you can dress up and down all fall/winter/spring long!

Earrings: Odd Bird – A pair of geometric dangling earrings add a touch of modern glam to this outfit. Best part? Odd Bird is now a whopping 50% off!

She’s Got Style : Fall TV : Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 : Krysten Ritter

She's Got Style: Krysten Ritter
I only recently discovered it, but Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 has quickly jumped on to my must-watch list. The classic beauty Krysten Ritter plays Chloe, a glamorous, self-centered New York City gal who takes delight in traumatizing her small-town roommate June.
Ritter was more known as an indie actress with several guest star TV and small film roles, until Don’t Trust the B set her on the course to bask in a bigger spotlight.
With striking features and porcelain skin, this star mixes classic feminine pieces (polka-dot dresses, A-line skirts) with modern edgy items (printed tunics, leather jackets, combat  boots) to create a sweet but sexy pin-up meets NYC style all her own!
Beauty regime: liquid-liner cat eyes and a berry lip stain are her standard. Of course, a healthy dose of SPF to keep her milky skin glowing!
Hair: Sleek and stylish with Bettie Page bangs. On a casual day? A flirty pony tail or a simple top-knot.

FC Designer Spotlight: Odd Bird Designs

Odd Bird jewellery is decidedly quirky yet fun to wear.It is a collection consisting of random items such as game pieces, geometric shapes, lockets, cuffs and whatever else catches the designers eye.The pieces will get noticed, therefore perfect for those who want to stand out from the flock! The Odd Bird is actually a human named Tara who is a long-standing member of the Fresh Collective and also works in the animation industry.

FALL FEATURE ITEMS:

Brass cuffs featuring Alphonse Mucha’s zodiac lady and a greyhound. I chose the Mucha art image not only for the Zodiac signs but because the lady is a red head (us red heads stick together!) The other cuff is a vintage star map image of a greyhound (or maybe a whippet?) representing the Canis Major constellation. I’ve always been fascinated by the stars ever since I was a kid and the dog star was always one of my favourites.

***
The Star domino necklace features the classic tarot card image hand-printed & coloured on the back of a large domino piece. The card is the 17th Trump or Major Arcana in most traditional tarot decks. It represents renewed hope, inspiration and discovery.

Q&A with Tara of Odd Bird Designs

How long have you been designing/where did you get your start?I’ve always been creating things ever since I can remember but it wasn’t until about 5 years ago I got serious about it and founded Odd Bird Designs as a registered business.

Where did you find your inspiration for this collection? For this Fall one of my themes is “Follow the Stars”. It’s inspired by constellations, astrology and divination….all things that have always fascinated me. Plus my name means “star” in Sanskrit so it seems appropriate 🙂

If you could dress any celebrity who would it be That would be my favourite red head, Christina Hendricks. I love her Joan character in the Mad Men series!

What is the most rewarding part about having your own line? I love seeing people on the street wearing my jewellery…it’s tempting to say “Thanks for liking my work!” to them!
What has been the best part of your Fresh Collective journey thus far? Getting feedback & suggestions from both customers and FC designers….they all have contributed to help Odd Bird become what it is now and I am very grateful for it.

FASHION FALL 2012 – FC Ambassador Guest Blog – Adaline

Here’s another FC Ambassador Guest Blog by the gorgeous and talented ADALINE. Check out her site and listen to her music at www.adalinemusic.com

I have been known to wear a sparkly dress or two.  In fact, I get teased about it often…strangely enough, mostly by my male friends.  ”So, see you Saturday night?  Are you going to be wearing one of those ridiculous sparkly things?”  My theory is that they are secretly jealous since the truth is the “craziest” thing they have ever worn is a pink tie.  I actually have photographic proof of the male envy of my wardrobe here…

…I should note that at least 3 of my male friends also wore this dress on the same evening. I think I’ve made my point.

So, when Fresh Collective asked me to be an FC Ambassador, I was very excited to indulge in my un-sequinned side.  Fresh Collective is a boutique company that showcases clothing and jewelry by local Toronto designers.  Often the fabrics are organic or even reclaimed making them one of a kind.  I was lucky enough to go to the store a few weeks ago and meet a lot of the designers.  It was such an amazing experience to try on a piece of clothing with the designer standing beside you.  Fresh Collective asked me to come in today and try on some of their fall pieces and give you a little preview of some of my favourite looks.  Below are some of my picks and the names of the designers

First, I love this cozy vest from Paper People Clothing. The vest is made of reclaimed fabrics!

This mustard dress which is one of my favourite fall colour choices is by Bionic (Mark Foreman).  I often find I gravitate towards his designs.  He makes sassy, casual dresses that seem to cling in all the right places, if you know what I mean…Thanks Mark!

Wrap dress is also a Bionic design.

The designer who I would say stole the show for me today was Brenda Beddome.  I hadn’t tried on any of her clothing until today but I fell for this scoop neck “tunic”, that of course is a dress on me (5’3, sheesh). I’m hoping I’ll get to wear it at some point during the West Coast Music Awards in Regina in a couple of weeks. Please also note my hand on waist model pose. I practiced that especially for you.

Here is another Brenda Beddome dress and a necklace by Tank!

Finally, accesories.  Fresh Collective has some very cute pieces of jewelry – I could have done an entire post on accessories.  Here are a few select pieces.

Matchy-matchy isn’t always cool but here I think it works. I adore Curious Oddities (Kat Shura) designs. Simple, tasteful pieces that have vintage flare.

This awesome cuff and necklace are by Odd Bird (Tara Campbell).

And finally…I promised I wouldn’t spend money but got a major crush on these Hush Puppies that have a bit of a Fluevog-esque look.  I didn’t even flirt with them.  I just took them home.

Thanks for joining me on my fall fashion extravaganza!  And thanks to Fresh Collective for once again letting me come in and destroy your dressing room.  If you like any of these pieces and want to support these Toronto designers, swing by Fresh Collective – they have three locations – 692 Queen Street West, 274 Augusta, and 401 Roncesvalles

…and how cute that they put pictures of the designers on their walls?  Cute!

She’s Got Style: Fall TV : Parenthood’s Lauren Graham

She's Got Style: Lauren Graham

If I wasn’t already excited enough about fall fashion, here comes fall television season! Old favourites returning, new shows and characters to fall in love with… oh the excitement!

Everyone takes a fashion cue or two from celebrities, so I thought why not tie in fall television to fall fashion and do a bit of a fashion profile on some of the starlets of the season!

In my opinion, one of the BEST shows on television, NBC’s Parenthood (on Global in Canada) finally returned from hiatus last week. I got a chance to watch the premiere episode last night and as always, it left me in tears (I’m a big sap, what can I say?). Now the cast is full of incredible stars, but I have a huge soft spot for TV’s coolest mom, Lauren Graham who plays the quirky Sarah Braverman. Not far off from her beloved role of Loralei Gilmore in Gilmore Girls, Graham plays a single mother with an irresponsible past, trying to get her life together with the help of her huge family of loveable kooks.

I’ve always admired Grahams style. She tends to wear comfortable, basic pieces with a bit of a bohemian flair, while adding just the right amount of rock and roll edge. She’ll pair a pretty, feminine dress with some knee-high leather boots, or add a biker jacket over basic jeans and a jersey top. A touch of sparkle with some statement jewellery, a nude lip and a simple eye are the finishing touches to this easy-to-master look!

What to Wear Wednesday – Fall Layers

What to Wear Wednesday - Fall Layers

The best thing about fall fashion is how versatile it is! Layering different patterns and fabrics can create a really interesting outfits that can easily be altered based on the temperature!

A pair of skinny jeans is a staple in any wardrobe, but I believe a good blazer is just as important. I’m loving the new Paper People Clothing styles (made from repurposed fabric)! Toss that blazer over a tank top in a rich fall colour in case you get too toasty in your blazer. Finish off your outfit with some statement accessories in gold or brass (these new pieces from Odd Bird are amazing), a pair of oxford shoes (NEW from Hush Puppies) and a light scarf in a fun print for a touch of personality!

FALL…ING FOR FRESH

We have been excitedly receiving fall items from our incredible family of designers over the past month and despite the hot summer temperatures, could hardly wait for fall to arrive – and at last here it is!

It’s the most exciting season for fashion and we’re happy to help you prepare your wardrobe accordingly. Below are some beautiful photos from our recent fall shoot of new items that are either already available in-store or are on their way! Which items are you most excited about for this season?

Call or pop in to your favourite FC location today to find a new fall treasure!

What to Wear Wednesday – Miss mustard

Today’s WTWW is based around one of my favourite pieces. MUSTARD SKINNY JEANS! Now to some these may seem alarming, but I promise they are a staple of the season.

We’ve got these great mustard-coloured Yoga Jeans in store right now at our Roncesvalles and Kensington Market locations and I wanted to put together a fun outfit with them!

You may think “what on earth do you wear with pants this colour?” but you’d be surprised at the number of combinations you can pull off! Obviously a basic black or white top will work, but pair it with an unexpected splash of colour (a royal blue or rust orange perhaps?) or a bold print to really stand out!

Below I paired them with a loose fitting bohemian white tank, a long necklace (Sugar Rush), stackable bangles (Odd Bird) and a great plaid blazer. Statement blazers in plaid or brocade are a big trend this fall and can take a casual outfit and turn it professional, while maintaining a high fashion edge and stand-out style. Finish your outfit with a pair of flats (in a colour that ties in the blazer) OR on a cooler day, try a pair of knee-high boots in a rich brown or black to complete the equestrian look!

What do you think? Are you brave enough to try this fun fall colour?
