Fresh Collective Style Profile – Michelle Planche

I met Michelle Planche last year when I was a judge in the Art of Fashion competition for emerging designers. Michelle is passionate about providing opportunities for designers, as am I, so we were a natural partnership.  We created a project together- a seminar called the Retailer’s Point of View and The Ultimate Holiday Dress Competition.  Michelle and I also serve on the board of Fashion Group International together.

Fresh Collective Style Profile – Sonia Shklarov

I met Sonia through Evan Malach, who is the creator of the play, “A Simple Twist of Fate” where she plays The Fiddler.  I met Evan because I was driving up Augusta Avenue in Kensington Market one day and I saw a wallet that looked freshly dropped.  I pulled over and picked it up, did a little googling and tracked down its owner who was Evan.  We chatted and he told me about the play, which is being put on in a gorgeous synagogue just down the street from the store, so we thought it was a great connection to promote his play on the Fresh Collective Style Profile.  Sonia was a delight to work with, and everything she put on looked great!  It was hard to narrow it down to just 3 outfits to showcase!

– Laura-Jean Bernhardson, CEO and founder, Fresh Collective

 Name: Sonia Shklarov

Occupation: Violinist

Age: 27

Lifestyle: active

Sonia’s petite and fit frame suits this dress that shows off her legs and shoulders. We added a silk scarf tied as a belt - in a rosette style no less!- to show how this dress can be dressed up, but it’s equally great with flat sandals for a casual walk in the park on a sunny afternoon.

What’s a typical day like for you? I like to make my days a balance of work, fitness, and socializing / community engagement. The summer is the best time to do all three! As a freelance violinist, I’m in charge of my own schedule – but that doesn’t mean I don’t have the responsibility to do a certain amount of work each day. If the night isn’t too late (sometimes I don’t get home ‘til 12 or 1am after a concert), I wake up before 8 and go for some type of workout. If there’s time, I try to squeeze in a short meditation before getting on with my day! Then, I love to head to a cafe for some social networking – work e-mails, business calls, updating social media sites, etc. These things are a huge part of my life as I’m constantly expanding my professional network, which is essential for a freelancer. After lunch is when I get the bulk of my work done: practicing violin, going to rehearsals, editing new musical ideas, and the occasional meeting. This is when I feel the most inspired and productive! In the evenings, I either go to a concert (my own, or a colleague’s), or out with friends – though during very busy music seasons, more practicing and rehearsals. Of course, all of this can change in a heartbeat during orchestra season (September to May) – days become packed with rehearsals, traveling, and more practice!

What in your life is really important to you? Music – namely, violin, staying in shape musically, keeping all parts of my work balanced. Also, learning – musical, spiritual, social. Also, I’ve been blessed with an amazing circle of family and friends, which is an element I intend to cherish and maintain – the people closest to me make me happy and I would do anything to make them happy in return.

What would you like to be remembered for? My smile, my energy, and shining a light into any one person’s life.

Style Coach Notes: This is the more dramatic of the looks we chose for Sonia, and thought this dress would be good for an opening night party of the play or for interviews from the media. While it makes a statement, it’s comfortable and flowy for dancing the night away. We kept the accessories simple with a delicate brass bird necklace and red bead earrings.

What role does fashion play in your life? Well, I hardly thought about it until I moved to Toronto in August 2012! Recently, fashion has really changed for me – expectations are different, and people here are more fashion-conscious than they are anywhere I’ve lived in my adult life. As a woman, I feel like my outfit says a lot about me – simple, confident; or sophisticated; complex, casual, or high-maintenance. I think it’s a power to effect how people perceive you – like it or not, it’s the first impression people get! It’s been a bit of an experimenting trip for me.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? I love how the salespeople are so friendly and helpful! All the colours of the outfits are amazing, and they really bring out the character of the person wearing them – as well as encourage us to take risks; try something new that perhaps we didn’t consider before. The dresses are great for many occasionals and are super comfortable – definitely on my list of stores to return to very soon!

Style Coach Notes:This is a simple and pretty look for Sonia. The rich colour looks stunning on her and the cut skims her curves without hugging tight anywhere. The fabric is light and airy, and this is a perfect summer dress for a wedding or event. It can be worn so many ways: for example belted or not, with a variety of scarves, with a blazer, wrap or shrug. A dress like this is a blank canvas for your accessories. For this look, we tied the black in the shoes together with the black in the scarf - simple, easy and looks great!

What are you up to these days? My music, to add a spark to any occasion, or give special concerts! I’m classically-trained, so lots of my work is with classical music – Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Brahms .. but I love touching the community through other musical styles, such as Klezmer, traditional Jewish tunes that people haven’t heard in years, movie music from the 30’s, the Beatles, contemporary popular songs, and that’s just scratching the surface. This July, I’m involved in a musical production for the Fringe Festival, called A Simple Twist of Faith – please check out the details below!

This summer, the Kiever Shul, a synagogue in the heart of Kensington Market, will be home to one of the most compelling new shows at the Toronto Fringe Festival. A Simple Twist of Faith is a heartfelt musical that tells the story of a Jewish American soldier during World War One whose experience in a German synagogue changes the course of his life. Audiences are treated to a mobile experience through the historic Kiever Shul in this innovative piece of Site-Specific theatre. The musical features some of Toronto’s finest musicians and shares an unforgettable story not to be missed. Just in time for the beginning of the hundredth anniversary of The Great War, this is a must-see Fringe show that will uplift and inspire.

*Sonia will be playing the role of the fiddler, a mystical pied piper type who leads audiences around and through the historic building with her captivating violin playing. Any patrons who come see the show, visit the merchandise table, say you came because of Fresh Collective Style Blog and receive the Official Cast Recording of the show at a discount.

Fresh Collective Style Profile – Casey Jane Tuninga

I have been a part of Fresh Collective’s Style Coach team since last November. Mark Foreman’s labels Address and Bionic were an instant wardrobe obsession for me. His fabrics are stunning and I always found they suited my body type perfectly.  It means a lot to me to support Toronto based designers which is why Bionic was a perfect fit as Mark is even from the same neighbourhood as I am, so I was thrilled when I was asked to model for and style myself for this blog Style Profile.

– Casey Tuninga, Fresh Collective Style Coach

Name: Casey Jane Tuninga

Occupation: Stylist Extraordinaire

Age: 27

Lifestyle: Letting the creative times roll

Style Coach Notes: Having a rather androgynous frame I always had difficulty really showing off my femininity, most dresses seemed to take over my body instead of framing it. When I tried on my first Bionic dress I felt like the lovely lady I wanted to show to the world. I felt elegant and the dresses fit so perfectly around every area I wanted to accent. I am in my late 20’s and being in the fashion industry I need to look more grown up and professional. I am always networking and need to be a strong representative of my work. (Dress: Veronica Wrap Dress - Bionic - $119, Shoes: Pepper - Miz Mooz $150)

What’s a typical day like for you? Every day is a little different. Mainly I’m between Fresh Collective Roncesvalles and Kensington. I do yoga in the morning with my lovely roommate and go next door and have a coffee with my mum. When I’m not making magic happen at FC I’m usually planning photo shoots with up-and-coming photographers and designers.

What in your life is really important to you? I have a strong passion for supporting and working with local artist which is why I chose to be a part of Fresh Collective. My friends and family are a big part of my life and I am always making time to laugh and connect with them.

Style Coach notes: I chose to wear Bionic dresses that would give me a figure and add that extra femininity to my silhouette. The wrap style of the Genia Dress was perfect because it made curves where I usually don’t. The V neckline is perfect for my small bust size and it makes me feel really elegant. The Miz Mooz Pepper Heels were a match made in heaven as they are not too high. I have long legs and sometimes shy away from heels that are too high as I feel like a giant. The pattern really worked with my semi fair skin tone and made me feel confident and sexy.

What would you like to be remembered for? I’d like to be remembered as a strong and driven woman who never gave up. A woman who succeeded in living the life she wanted. Oh, and winning a pizza pocket eating competition, that would be rad.

What role does fashion play in your life? I always remember the scene from Breakfast at Tiffany’s when Holly Golightly gets out of a cab and elegantly walks towards a building. She takes out a croissant and dips it in her coffee while staring at a Tiffany display window. She calls this her red days, whenever life seems crazy she gets in a cab and goes to Tiffany’s to escape in diamond heaven. That is fashion for me, its a passion, an escape, and a way of life.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? That I am supporting local designers, I’m buying fashion made directly from the creative source. I’m also supporting a local business that in return supports me.

(Dress: Courtney Jersey Dress - Bionic $109, Shoes: Pepper - Miz Mooz $150)

Style Coach Notes: I just love the loose and drapey fit of this dress, and feel great in it. It can be dressed up or down and accessorized in such a variety of ways, I could easily get away with wearing it several times each month! (Dress: Courtney Jersey Dress – Bionic $109, Shoes: Pepper – Miz Mooz $150}

What are you up to these days? I have a blog I’ve been writing for the past two years about the ups and downs of being an artist and living creatively. However I make sure to include a ton of funny and embarrassing stories about being a mid twenty female in downtown Toronto. www.sailorparc.wordpress.com
I also have my Styling portfolio and Website that showcases my recent freelance work in fashion, television, and print. www.sailorparcstyling.wordpress.com

Fresh Collective Style Profile – Callie Presniak

I met Callie for the first time when she came in to model for the Style Profile.  She strode confidently into the store, beaming a wide and warm smile.  Her energy and style is engaging, and it’s no surprise she is a busy and talented performer, writer and all around creative powerhouse.  Callie was a lot of fun to photograph and certainly did an amazing job representing Fresh Collective!

Laura-Jean Bernhardson, CEO and founder of Fresh Collective

Name: Callie Presniak

Occupation: Actor, singer, dancer, instructor, and director

Age: I wanted to do a math joke here but I got 23% on my high school math exam, so…

Lifestyle: Peaceful, active and arty

SAMSUNG CSC

Style Coach notes: Given Callie’s lifestyle (many different jobs in a day and a lot of running around) we chose outfits that could transition easily and allow a lot of comfort and flexibility. Callie could wear this dress with leggings and teach kids and throw on some accessories to go meet a casting director. And if she had to get around on a bike, she could even do that in this outfit. (Dress: Scoop Neck – Rita di Cesare $169, Bag: Abbey – Taska Bags $99, Shoes: Pepper – Miz Mooz $150)

What’s a typical day like for you? I’m blessed to have my dream life of being really physical, really chilled out, and fully ensconced in art every day. I wake up at 6:30 or 7 to allow lots of chill time in the morning with tea and breakfast (although sometimes it’s at-home work time too). Then I hop on my bike and commute to work where I teach dance and gym/gymnastic-ish classes to children. Then I bike back on home and refuel because sheesh, I get hungry after that! I usually recover watching shows/a movie, or writing. Then I get my fitness on so I can handle those insane 4-hour dance calls, always with lots of stretching. Variables include either rehearsals for a show I’m in or directing, playing piano/learning new songs, painting, working on my rep book/singing, auditions, or meeting my pals for adventures. I always end my day with my beautiful husband, getting quality time together and being all in love or whatever.

Style Coach notes: Callie is young and fun, so an A-line skirt like this is a great addition to her wardrobe. As you can see, it can be dressed up with a halter top (this top can actually be worn many ways!) or would be just a great with a tee-shirt and jean jacket, or a smart little top and fitted blazer. When styling our customers, we are always committed to building wardrobes with a lot of versatility and value.

What role does fashion play in your life? I spend a lot of my time in fitness or dance clothing, both for my job and the fact that I bike everywhere, so when I do get to wear ‘real’ clothes, it makes me feel…well, fashionable! I have all these clothes which I love wearing, but seldom get to. It’s like having a double wardrobe. So when I do, I feel supreme. It can make me feel flirty, powerful, sexy, professional, ‘cool’ (is it lame to want to look cool? probably)–anything I want to feel, I use my clothes to express that. I tend to wear ‘real’ clothes when I have somewhere awesome to go, like an audition, a date, to see a friend’s show, or church, so it helps that wearing them has such positive associations! Plus, since I’m used to being in comfy clothes most of the time, most all of my fashionable items are comfy too, and I just lurve that.

Style Coach notes: Way to elevate a casual look with boldly coloured jeans, a stylish top and a great fitted linen blazer! The jeans are so comfortable she can do anything in them (Yoga Jeans!!) and the whole look just looks to polished and professional but fun!

(Blazer: Blanche – Paper People Clothing $225, Top: Drape – Rita di Cesare $79, Jeans: High Rise Ankle – Yoga Jeans $115, Shoes: Athena – Miz Mooz $145)

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? Well, I hate that I can’t buy everything!
I love that the clothing is quirky and unique without sacrificing functionality–I could wear a dress comfortably over my sports bra and shorts to an early audition, then take it off for work, then throw it back on for a meeting. I don’t feel like I must be either sitting or standing with two pairs of Spanx and a push-up bra in those dresses–I can move like a fully capable human being. Also, the vintage silhouettes–fave!

Style Coach notes: Callie LOVED this dress and sent an email after the shoot stating, “I told my husband the orange dress made me feel like a 'bossy goddess' hah!” This dress fit her like a dream, and the stretchy fabric meant it was still comfortable. There are a lot of occasions a woman may want to show up in the world as a “bossy goddess” and this may just be the dress for those days!

I teach a variety of styles and there’s a bunch of fun stuff you can do there! www.oaksnacorns.com

Is there anything else we should know about you? I’m so glad to be alive. Isn’t living a wonderful thing?

Style Profile – Clarissa Vandenbussche

I met Clarissa at our local climbing gym Boulderz. Clarissa is part of my women’s climbing group, Climb Like A Girl and every time I see her at the gym she is always so happy and positive. As I got to know her better I learned about what she is up to in her career as a registered massage therapist and what she wants to take on and transform in her industry. – Jane Haselgrove, Regional Manager – Fresh Collective

Name: Clarissa Vandenbussche RMT

Occupation: Registered Massage Therapist, Instructor at CCMH, Peer Assessor for the CMTO

Age: 30’s, that’s all you need to know you little nosey devil!

Style Coach Notes: For this first look Clarissa and I decided this would be perfect to go into a meeting. She often meets with students or faculty where she teaches massage therapy. This is a great look because it’s simple, versatile and professional.

Lifestyle: A delicate balance between work and activity. Whenever I am not at one of my jobs I am usually found at the climbing gym, out with my dog or doing something active.

What’s a typical day like for you?  A bit of a whirlwind first thing in the morning which starts at 6am. It usually consisting of being woken by my dog who won’t let me do anything until she has received her food, throw on the clothes I have pulled out the night before and going for a quick walk which is then promptly followed by me walking out the door and jumping on transit to get to work. I like to arrive early for whatever it is and I am barely functionally until I have had a very large cup of tea. The rest of my day will be consumed by running from one job to the next, teaching, patients and conducting peer assessments. By the time I get home in the evening it’s time to feed and walk the dog again before I get to do anything for myself. If I am lucky and I have the energy and even if I don’t I typically force myself to go for a run, down to the gym in my building or out to the climbing gym for a workout.

Style Coach Notes: The second look is perfect for teaching in. It has a high neckline, provides lots of room and movement and it’s still very cute.

What in your life is really important to you?  My family, friends, and my loving dog are extremely important to me. I try and spend as much time as possible with them because you never know what can happen in life.

What would you like to be remembered for? I would like to be remembered as someone who constantly keeps people on their toes. I am a very quiet and often surprise people with the things i have done because I am always trying something new.

Style Coach Notes: This is a much for fun look for Clarissa outside of work. Shall we say it’s a going on a date or out for drinks look. The vibrant colour of this dress mixed with the subtle blue glass compliment each other nicely. To top it all off this is a knit dress so it’s extremely comfortable and easy to wear.

What role does fashion play in your life?  When teaching I usually try to dress business casual. I have to often be very cautious about what I wear so that I stand out from the students. I have often had new students think I am also a stunt because I look much younger than I am. Similar attire is used for when I am practicing and acting in the role of a peer assessor so that I appear professional in representing my own business and the regulatory body. I rarely get the opportunity to wear dresses except a few times a year when I attend my students graduation. Fresh Collective had some very stylish numbers which can be versatile for daytime wear to evening wear which is always a plus.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?  There is always a wide selection of designers and styles. I loved some of the colours especially there was some rusty oranges and beautiful greens. The jewellery they carry is also simple yet elegant.

What are you up to these days?  For as long as I can remember I have been drawn to helping people. Immediately out of high school I attended school to become a Registered Massage Therapist. Nearly 10 years in the profession now I still love it as much as I did the first day of practicing. Never did I ever imagine I would become an instructor or work for the regulatory body but as the years passed I have become very passionate about educating and encouraging other therapists and students to be the best therapists they can. The profession has come a long way but we are consistently still educating the public about what is it that we do. I have been conducting my own practice for the past 7 years, located in the fashion district on Spadina Ave. I offer a variety of services in addition to Massage Therapy including Contemporary Medical Acupuncture, Craniosacral Therapy and Athletic Taping. As of the beginning of May, I now offer Dynamic Taping as part of my practice which is effective for aiding in the recovery of injuries. For more information contact me and I would be happy to discuss how you could benefit from its application, www.clarissarmt.com

Style Coach Notes: The final look is comfortable and versatile while still structured and flattering. A great look that will take her straight from a meeting to a night out! (Top: Gaby – Kabuki $89, Skirt: Eliza – Kabuki $108, Bracelet: Ch-chains – BurfurtArt $45, Shoes: Travel Sling – Hush Puppies $100)

Is there anything else we should know about you? I am a very clumsy person but surprisingly I am balanced when it counts such as when I am on a climbing wall or maneuvering around my office. I also make amazing beef jerky, so tasty it will turn a chipmunk carnivorous (I didn’t know this was possible but the little guy wouldn’t leave my bag alone).

Style Profile – Patty K

Patty is one of the most fabulous people in my life. We chat about makeup and men and then head out for trivia nights. Brainy and beautiful would be a limiting description of this woman. Patty captures her spunky energy in every way she styles herself; from fabulous nail art to creative accessories that all work for her lifestyle. Each outfit we chose accentuates Patty’s figure that she’s ready to show off after dropping over 100 pounds since 2012.

We’ve become great friends in short amount of time through our love of fashion. We stopped in at our local Kensington cafe – The Grind House – for a fun morning photo shoot. And to cheers to our friendship over our other love, coffee!  <3 Terri-Leigh

Name: Patty Kamarinos
Occupation: Makeup Artist + Esthetician + Beauty Blogger
Age: 30-something but who’s counting?
Lifestyle: one part Girl about town, two parts social butterfly with a sprinkle of introversion to recharge.

Dress: A-Line dress in red – Atelier B $175.00
Necklace: Curious Oddities $26.00
Belt: Kimono belt in brown – Susana Erazo $160.00

The A-line cut of this dress was perfect for Patty’s hourglass shape. I wanted to accent her curves without over emphasizing. The rule of thirds really helped in creating this – keeping the portions suitable to her height and figure. The belt also created a more defined waist and becomes a great accent piece.

What’s a typical day like for you?
Beautifying urban goddesses & satiating my adventurous curiosities with the help of copious amounts of caffeine.

What in your life is really important to you?
Being surrounded by amazing people whether it be family, friends, colleagues or clients. There’s a special place in my heart for my nephew, Niko, though. That kid is my sunshine.

What would you like to be remembered for?
Inspiring and allowing people to see the natural beauty they possess.

Dress: Calamity Jane dress in Black – Annie 50 $179.00
Bracelet: Rock Candy – BurfurtART $45.00

Patty is a bit of a rock star but still professional. The clean lines and knee length hem of the dress keep this outfit age appropriate without limiting her personality. Again, an accentuated waist helps to maintain proportions without distracting from her silhouette.

What role does fashion play in your life?
Fashion is the root of my inspiration as a makeup artist. The colours, the textures, the lines; it not only ignites inspiration for makeup ideas but invites a freedom of expression of how I want to present myself to the world.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?
I love that it is Toronto-centric and supports local designers.

What do you have that you want to promote?
I have been running my beauty blog, Inside The Makeup Case  for a few years now. It’s a great outlet for me to share looks, tips and my professional expertise with my audience and is the catalyst for allowing me to constantly research what new products, trends and techniques are out there.

Dress: Kladis wrap dress in Leopard -Bionic $119.00
Necklace: Rock Candy w Extender – BurfurtART $57.00
Shoes: Patty’s own

The sleeve length on this wrap dress was a happy discovery for us as we picked out necklines that Patty could move in. This dress can carry her from work with an added cropped jacket or cardigan (perfect for her waist height) and then removed for a night out. The leopard print shows off her energy without being too bold for her shape.

Is there anything else we should know about you?
Since making a huge lifestyle change that allowed me to lose 130 lbs last year, I also have a tumblr that focuses on clean recipes that are delicious and nutritious; a way for me to keep an online recipe box of sorts.

Style Profile – Sarah Couture McPhail

In our seventh Style Profile, we feature one of Laura-Jean’s best friends, Sarah Couture McPhail. Laura-Jean and Sarah have known each other for more than 15 years.  Sarah met Laura-Jean through one of the first employees of Fresh Collective, and then worked part-time at the Kensington store when it was still called Fresh Baked Goods.

“Sarah has always been among the most stylish women I know.  She effortlessly mixes and matches, and uses accessories in creative and fun ways to produce endless looks.  I feel like I’ve never seen her wear the same thing twice, but I know she pulls from her closet from past seasons and just makes things look new.

She’s an avid Fresh Collective shopper, and loves to find the unique Canadian designer pieces that make her wardrobe so special. Aside from being super stylish, Sarah is fun, amazing and incredibly kind hearted.  She is a mom of twin boys, an artist and active in her community and her school.

She’s the kind of friend who has great get-togethers, awesome parties for her kids and can feed you or find a glass of wine for you just because you popped in her back door unannounced. She shows up at your door with home remedies when she knows you’re sick and her house is the one all the kids just gravitate to in the summertime.  I feel blessed to have Sarah in my life and I wanted to let the world know how much I love her.

What’s a typical day like for you? I am rushing. I rush kids and myself off to school; I run to the studio; I fetch errands; I work on Parent Council endeavours; and I cook up other community projects. I try to squeeze in friend time, quality kid time, and time with my partner as much as I can. This usually results in scrambling hard for a stretch, then crashing hard for a couple days.

What in your life is really important to you? So much is important to me, but my family and friends are paramount. My house is full. I like it that way. I am also very appreciative of the quiet time I get to spend at the studio I share. Without any doubt, I am fortunate.

What would you like to be remembered for? “I aspire to help build communities and create them where they don’t already exist.” That is a quote from my resume. More than that though, I would like to equally and wholeheartedly be remembered for being a good friend/ mom/ and partner. I would also like to leave behind some damn good art… since we are being optimistic here.

What role does fashion play in your life? Fashion has always been a special source of inspiration. In the past, I’ve really enjoyed conceptual dressing. Whether it be playing with a nautical look or rocking 70s librarian, I am drawn to the associations that clothes ignite. Dressing up is often like taking on a new character. Though I might not act like an 80s glam superstar, when I wear a metallic blouse with a belted harness (not as crazy as it sounds) I am trying to conjure a feeling. When it works, it puts a strut in my stride and nothing can go wrong. Today while I dress a little more conservatively (by my own standards), I am still drawn to vintage and vintage inspired pieces. I like structured and well made clothes that will last. I also like blending modern clothes with retro ones too.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective? I have been a fan of Fresh Collective since the beginning. Finding clothes that fit me is not easy. Stores don’t stock for short and curvy people. I love knowing that the clothes I buy from Fresh are conflict free. I also love knowing that I am supporting local designers and fellow artisans. I hardly ever walk out of the stores without buying something, which leads me to avoid going in sometimes. But the clothes, and the skilled and helpful sales team at Fresh Collective never fail to draw me back in… often.

What do you have that you want to promote? Right now I am busy at school and doing personal projects, but you can always check out my tumblr, for upcoming workshops and events.

Is there anything else we should know about you? I am extremely uncomfortable “tooting my own horn”. In my line of work, it is unfortunately essential. This was a good exercise.  Thank you Fresh Collective for this and for being a positive place for women of all shapes, a reliable place for edgy/on trend fashion and an amazing gang of people. You all are extraordinary.

Style Profile – Michelle Carey

In the sixth edition of our Style Profile series, we feature one of our long term designers, Michelle Carey. Michelle has been selling her line at Fresh Collective for more than five years now, and it has developed into one of our most popular lines. Her Amy Dress is a perennial best-seller and her pieces are known for flattering fit, meticulous construction, and feminine silhouettes that suit a range of women and figures.

Michelle is a sweetheart and her nephew is the light of her life.  She visits him frequently and was thrilled to be able to wear the ring he gave her in her photos because he would be excited to see her wearing it.  Michelle sews every stitch of her beautiful garments herself, and is just one of the awesome designers who make up our community.  I’ve enjoyed every minute of working with this talented, dedicated, and lovely entrepreneur all these years!

What’s a typical day like for you?

Full of planning! I have to look at the start of my day at Fresh Collective and where I might be going afterward whether it’s karaoke, trivia club or on a date. Typically, with just one outfit, some accessory options take me easily throughout the day and evening. I’m on the go from sun up to sun down and I love it!

What in your life is really important to you?

Family – and friends; especially the ones that are more like family now – are most important to me.  I want to make sure everyone I love gets to have time together. It’s a great recharge for me; an energy boost.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I don’t know if I’d want to have a lasting legacy, but I do want to be remembered for the happiness I bring to the people around me. A smile and wave can do a lot for the heart!

What role does fashion play in your life?

Fashion is part of me. I find it in everything I do. How am I presenting myself as a Style Coach at Fresh Collective? How am I presenting myself as an authority on the flat-track? (I’m a Roller Derby Official.) It is how I carry myself when I walk out the door to coming home at night.

TL - holly dress

Dress: Holly Dress by Kabuki. Regular price, $179.00 now with 40% off makes it only $107.40.

What do you love about shopping at Fresh Collective?

Supporting our designers is a major reason why I love Fresh Collective. I know I can be out in a crowd and noticed for the unique and intelligent design of the pieces I am wearing, because our designers take so much care in making these decisions. And, I love that I can chat up our shop to everyone I meet!

What do you have that you want to promote?

I am a Roller Derby Official and my league, Hammer City Roller Girls, is entering into their 9th season. Our Season Opener is May 3rd.  We come from all walks of life (just like our fabulous customers!). I want to celebrate in the fact that we are all different shapes, sizes, ages but everyone is an amazing human being, capable of truly captivating things!

Is there anything else we should know about you?

I have a penchant for high-waisted undies that show off my curves, I can be found singing at karaoke weekly, and I like to dance to  great tunes from the 50s & 60s (and a little Wilson Phillips too).

What’s a typical day like for you?
A typical day looks like working at Fresh Collective all day from 11-7pm.  From there I either go out and work on my other business hosting parties, going to meetings or meeting with people for a drink. Three nights a week I also go Bouldering after work. It’s kind of like rock climbing but there are no ropes!
What in your life is really important to you?
Balance is very important to  me. I love to be busy doing things I love but I also don’t like to be controlled by my schedule. Scheduling my life so that it works for me is very important to staying positive and happy even when things don’t work out the way I planned.

What would you like to be remembered for?
Revolutionizing the indie fashion world!  I LOVE what I do at Fresh Collective. If I am remembered for being part of an institution that has made thriving careers for designers and stylists in Toronto and perhaps, world wide, my life would be well spent.
What role does fashion play in your life?
In the last two years I have really  embraced that I am a Fashion Professional. Style and fashion is my career and I love that I get to embrace self-expression through fashion every day. In other words, it plays a VITAL role in my daily life and my identity.
